For many local New Yorkers, summer weekends are a time to escape the city to a nearby beach or to head upstate to the mountains. Labor Day weekend is the last long weekend of the summer and unofficially marks the end of the summer season in the United States.
Throughout the summer New York sees a continuous influx of tourists, but as schools around the country begin either just before or just after Labor Day, tourism in New York slows for a period before the holiday rush begins again around Thanksgiving. Therefore, planning a trip around Labor Day weekend can typically offer a wider range of apartments in New York as well as a slightly less crowded city with many locals out of town and few families in the city.

- Central Park: A great time to enjoy the park and visit the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir fountain, which has been reactivated to celebrate 100 years of New York City’s water supply and will operate until the fall.
- The Floating Pool at Brooklyn Bridge

For whatever reason you decide to come to New York on Labor Day, it is one of the best times to enjoy what the city has to offer. The weather is usually perfect, the crowds are a bit lighter than the rest of the summer, and there are plenty of activities for the adventurous traveler.

I saw that fountain last time it was turned on in 2003 to celebrate 150 years since Central Park’s completion worth a look before it’s turned off again. Its a great view in the afternoon entering from the Upper East Side of the park with the sun setting in the west.
