A multitude of agencies offer accommodations in apartments or homes worldwide. Surfing the Internet (search for "vacation rentals" plus the name of your intended destination) turns up dozens of options. Here's a small sampling of firms that do business in popular summer spots in Europe. Note: A seven-day minimum stay often is required.

- Nell Gwynn House Apartments. More than 150 flats furnished hotel-style on trendy Sloane Avenue near the South Kensington tube stop. Some have great skyline views.
