Description
Studio Apartment in Harlem (NY-12768)

Offering a northern exposure from the living room and bathroom, this studio apartment is located in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, NYC on 131st Street and Lenox Avenue. It is on the second floor (equivalent to the European 1st floor) of a charming walk-up brownstone building, which has a buzzer / intercom system for security. For an additional monthly fee, you can have use of the washing machine and dryer that are in the apartment.

The air-conditioned studio has a practical layout, with an open, fully-equipped kitchen and living /dining room area, allowing you to watch cable or a DVD on the wall-mounted flat screen TV, as you prepare your meal and sit down to enjoy it. The eat-in kitchen, with seating and countertop space that fits two people, features adequate cabinet space, and a separate dining table, also for two. The living area is equipped with shelves and a closet, and furnished, in a classic style, with a queen size sofa bed and side tables with lamps. The bathroom conveniently has a mirrored medicine cabinet, wall-mounted shelves, and a vanity sink with ample cabinet space, making it convenient to fit your toiletries and other bath accessories.

You will enjoy staying in Harlem, a historic neighborhood of New York with much to offer. Some of the most famous attractions are the Apollo Theater (6 blocks), where you can catch live music shows and vocal performances, and the Cotton Club (1.3 miles / 2 km), which is popular for its “Sunday Gospel Brunches”, as is Shrine (3 blocks) for its Jazz festivals. There are plenty of eateries nearby, such as Yatenga French Bistro & Bar (3 blocks), a neighborhood staple with rustic styling that serves up delicious, freshly prepared meals, and Sylvia’s (5 blocks), a Harlem legend known as the “Queen of Soul Foods”. Don’t miss out on the renowned Malcolm Shabazz market (15 blocks), an outdoor venue where you’ll find amazing African goods and ethnic crafts that will make unique gifts! Once you’re there, walk six blocks down to Central Park, a NYC landmark where you can engage in many different sports and other outdoor activities, eat at the Loeb Central Park Boathouse restaurant, marvel at the beautiful gardens, or just sit under a tree and relax! You can discover other areas of Manhattan and other New York boroughs easily, as there is access to public transportation near the apartment.

The closest subway stations are 135 Street / Lenox Avenue (2 and 3 trains)—4 blocks, and 125 Street (A, B, C, and D trains). There are several academic institutions in the vicinity, among them the City College of New York and Columbia University. Adjacent neighborhoods include Morningside Heights, Hamilton Heights, East (Spanish) Harlem, the Upper West Side and the Upper East Side.

Please note that smoking is not allowed in this studio apartment.

  • Review by: Silke F.
    Apartment Rental: 2 months

    positive: clean and nice design

negative: drug area, it is impossible to sleep on the sofa (very big and hard spiral springs), I had to buy an airbed. Owner is unfriendly if things are not done her way, unflexible, gives short shrift to somebody, unreliable (doesn't show up on several meetings/cancel 10 min before meeting with out excuse and appoint new meeting time without asking me time is okay or not).

Owner brings people to apt for showing several times a week. I had to fight to get back my deposit. I had to deal with the electricity company of NYC (coned) to pay my utilities. That is too difficult for a tourist of a foreign country, especially if your English is not very good. I waisted 7 full days of my holiday to handle the utilities and to fight/get back my deposit. Too many hard problems and anger for a holiday, without the help of 2 native New Yorker friends I would have more trouble. NEVER AGAIN!!!

      Apartment Owner

I have been here as a landlord for 10 years and am personally not aware of drug activity. As far as I know Silke choose this area/apt because of the location. Her boyfriend was part of the initial process of her renting the apt. In fact, he came to drop off her security deposit before she arrived in NYC.

Silke never complained about the sofa bed; so this is the first I am hearing about it. However I will check the sofa bed, and if need be I will make a change.

As far as showing the apartment to prospective tenants, typically, NYC landlords show their apartments before the current tenant vacates to ensure continued rental income. Silke was given 24-48 notice each time I was due to show the apartment.

My tenants are responsible for their own utilities. When they move in, they are giving written information on how to call and set up an account with the utility company (Con Edison), and the apartment ID.

Approximately a week before she was due to leave. Silke informed me that she was having a problem with the bill she received from the Cities utility company (Con Edison). I investigated and explained to Silke how to correct the problem and what she needed to do to resolve it. I returned the entire security deposit since Silke fulfilled her end.
