What a complex stay.

I really appreciate the price of my room and the closeness (good connections) to downtown Manhattan. For what I needed, this apartment had it all.

But let me break it down, because stuff was crazy.

Ramona and Philip were very nice people with me specifically. I could tell they were willing to help me and to make my stay as comfortable as possible. Philip was living with us and oft-times so was his uncle, which wasn't the most comfortable thing but that's just how life works in that part of town. Truth is, Philip lives quietly and he mostly is not there. The uncle, who only speaks Spanish, otherwise.

My room cool. It's the tiniest room I have every lived in, ever, but I learnt how to make it feel my own. The bed was comfortable. I had no desk but I used a portable table that they had in the living room. There was enough space for my clothes (I don't have many material things, though). The closet was cute and I used it as my panic room ? whatever that means to you. And I had access to the fire escape which I crazily have feelings for: I would sunbathe on sunny days, meditate at night, I even shot a video for my theater class. The access to the fire escape is not the easiest, and I reckon not everybody would use it as often as I did, but the need for outdoor space would make me find avenues. And as far as I am concerned it's legal to use it as a makeshift patio. Therefore, even though the room is the smallest in the apartment, its the only one with access to the fire escape, so it turns out to be doper than any of the other more expensive rooms.

The building is just insane. It really is. There's a lot of motion there and the people you?ll find are gonna surprise you in all kinds of ways literally. I once found a human shit on the staircase, or a man getting a haircut on the rooftop. Whatever, the place is harmless and if you?re down for fun and not really petty you?re really gonna enjoy it. The door to the rooftop is (clandestinely?) open, so I used to go there to sunbathe throughout May.

I had many issues with cockroaches which I didn't communicate to neither Ramona or Philip. They already knew there was a tendency for roaches and they tried to keep everything the cleanest. I've been in other apartments in New York and this is just a common problem literally everywhere. New York is a filthy city, period. I am not sure, though, if it could be solved hiring an exterminator, because the cockroaches that I stumbled into were the little ones, not big street cockroaches. I knew there were gonna be bugs cause I read other reviews on the page. I just decided my stay in the City was gonna be short enough to just live it to the fullest, without taking those things that seriously. Maybe I would've considered that if I was gonna take it as my home.

The neighborhood is lovely for what I like and needed. It's always crowded with street markets and people both chilling and making a living on the streets. There's enough nightlife (some bars and restaurants, central Harlem is quite close too for cinemas and stuff). There?s any business you would ever need: supermarkets, nail salons, barbers, delis And the subway downtown is literally 2 minutes away. And, most important, it's cheaper than anywhere else in Manhattan.
The river is one block away never forget that. It's gonna guide you through your worst days, as well as offer you happiness on cheerful days. Central Park is a 30-minute walk through Harlem and it's beautiful.

Unlike me, I am aware not everyone has had a good experience in this apartment. Let me stress on that because it's important to know what kind of person you are, what your needs and your boundaries are, and what you?re expecting from your stay.

Dear Mario,
Thank you for your review.
We are glad to read that your stay was good overall.
We have shared your review with the owner. She told us that there is an exterminator coming on regular basis to take care of the cockroaches issue. Unfortunately, it is a very common problem in the city.
Thank you again for your input.
Best,

5 minutes walking distance from city college and 15 from Columbia University. The neighborhood is very nice. The landlords are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. They will make everything they can to make sure you have a good experience. Highly recommend for those who want to be well placed for a reasonably good price.

The building and the apartment are very old. We have had several leakages in the bathroom and there are cockroaches all the time. However, the owner did everything to make everybody feel comfortable and most of the time the (new) roommates were very nice.

Dear Marina,

Thank you for providing your feedback. I apologize that your experience didn't meet your expectations. The building is a pre-war and although we can not help the age of the building we do try our very best to keep it clean. Living in NYC roaches are inevitable as they tend to come in from the outside. We constantly try different ways to maintain it a pest free home.

Unfortunately, during part of your stay we did have some plumbing issues that were resolved. Guest satisfaction is our number one priority. If there is anything we can do to make it up to you please feel free to reach out to me directly.

Yours Truly,

Ramona

The apartment was very dirty when I arrived. The room was okay, but we had many roaches. The building is very old and dirty as well, and since we had no air conditioning at all anywhere in the apartment, it made living there in the summer months unbearable. The roommates were a hit and miss. We were never told when someone new was going to move in, and some roommates were incredibly dirty and messy. Also, none of us living there were told that the family's uncle was coming to use the apartment, which made us girls feel uncomfortable at times. He was also very loud in the morning and sometimes left a mess behind in the kitchen. The most disappointing this is, though, that I later found out that we were charged too much for rent and the owners were making money through us. They were nice people, but only if you were quiet and didn't complain. We were also not allowed to have any friends over. I was happy to complete my year living in this apartment because I never felt at home. I always felt like we, who rented the rooms, were being watched and not allowed to live as freely as someone living in a regular apartment, which is what I had hoped for when I booked this room.

Dear Viktoria,
I'm sorry to hear about your unfortunate experience. We really appreciate your feedback and I would like to take this chance to comment on your points.
1) There will be times bugs find their way in especially in summer months through the windows in a large City like New York City. We do try our very best to prevent that.
2) Some rooms do have AC, however, in the room that you choose it did not because the window is a fire escape window. It can not be blocked because it's another exit out of the apartment in case of an emergency. The safety of everyone is most important. Under the description for that room it does state no A/C. We did however provide you a brand new large stand alone fan.
3) Our uncle did come by every morning to sweep, mop and clean because none of the roommates seemed to be able to clean after themselves. I remember having a conversation with you in reference to this and you were ok with it. I wish you would of stated that you felt differently. We have always had an open door policy and any issues that you made us aware of were addressed to the best of our ability.
4) Friends and family were not allowed for overnight stays as stated in the contract before you committed to move in. I also explained the reasons why to you.
5) You didn't stay the full year and we allowed you to leave without the 30 day notice and returned your money in full with no problem.
We work to accommodate everyone as best as possible but we also recognize that everyone has different living styles.
I apologize again for your unpleasant experience. Feel free to reach out to me directly if you ever have any questions or comments, or if there is anything we can do to help remedy your experience.
R.

I felt very comfortable during the 4 months I spent in this shared apartment. Got along very well with the roommates and above all the apartment is exceptionally quiet.

With public transport very close by, connection to the city center is really good.
