Description
Studio Vacation in East Village (NY-11967)

This studio is located on the 2nd floor of a walk–up brownstone building in the heart of Manhattan’s East Village on 6th Street, between the main thoroughfares of 1st and 2nd Avenues. The building has a buzzer/intercom system for your convenience.

The studio is well-lit, with nearly a wall of windows and small skylight in the main room to allow in natural light. These windows face north, overlooking a backyard garden area, away from the street. From the couch you can enjoy a flat screen TV with cable and a stereo system. WI-FI Internet is available as well. Birch hardwood floors line the unit, and there is a small closet in the hallway and a small closet stocked with linens and towels. A compact kitchen is supplied with a small fridge, toaster oven, coffee maker and microwave. A single electric burner is provided for cooking simple meals. Pots and pans and dinnerware are provided. The bathroom is tiled in white with a shower compartment. Please note that due to the size of this apartment, there is limited storage space for folded clothes and a small closet to hang clothes.

This vacation rental is located in a very central spot in lower Manhattan, the East Village. There are dozens of small restaurants offering cuisine from around the world around the corner on 2nd Avenue and the famous McSorley's Old Ale House is just a little over a block away (approx. 350m). Tompkins Square Park is 2 blocks (about 400m) from this apartment, and offers a calm area to relax in New York City. Shopping is fun with the many small boutiques line the streets in this area (St. Mark's Place is iconic!). Public transportation is convenient with the 6 (at Astor Place / 4 Avenue) and N/R (at 8 Street / Broadway : New York University) subway stations just over three blocks away (about 650m), offering both express and local trains to connect you to the rest of New York City. There is also the F train on 2nd Avenue / Houston Street : Lower East Side.

Please note that this accommodation is in the East Village, which is a lively neighborhood and can be noisy at times, more so on the weekends than on weekdays.

We spent ten days in this apartment, it is small -we were aware of this before - but functional. Tony and Michele are adorable and willing to help at all times, you just have to email them. Ideal location 5 min from the subway.
Careful, the toaster is below the smoke detector. It is a bit surprising at 6 am!!!

It's good that the website states that this apartment is small and functional. I have moved the toaster to another area of the unit so that there will be no surprises at 6 am.

The accommodation was true to its description in all respects. Of a small size, it was perfectly laid-out and equipped. The cleanliness was perfect. Located at the back of the building, it was perfectly quiet. The bed was very comfortable.

East Village is a pleasantly lively neighborhood with stores and restaurants and transportation (bus and subway) easily accessible. Michelle gave us a warm welcome and gave us all the information we needed for a successful stay.

We had a dream vacation. We are planning to come back as soon as possible.

+ The bed was very comfortable
+ The entrance doors where locked by a code, so no key necessary
    + Very quiet room
+ View to a tree, not concrete
+ Friendly welcome with a lot of tips, very nice
    + Save neighborhood
+ Grocery nearby (whole foods market), you can also get warm food there too that's not so expensive (really nice in NY, dining out is very expensive)

    - Bathroom should be renovated
    - Room very small (I was alone so it was ok. For 2 people not enough space)
    - Locker too small
    - Smoke detector went off just because of the toaster, even thought nothing had been burned
    - Pictures are not recent, room has much darker walls (not so nice)
    - Hallway should be renovated too: creaky stairs, spalling paint
    - Wireless signal was weak, lost it a few times

Thank you for your suggestion regarding the bathroom and the size of the room. Our guests have always enjoyed our bathroom and our room has fitted 2 people just fine in the last 6 years of rental.

Regarding the luggage lockers, they are provided as a courtesy and we think they are an adequate size. I am glad to hear that the smoke detector fulfills its function. Regarding the walls, we only added carpet to one of them.

Thank you for your suggestion concerning the hallway. We will think about ways to improve it. We also checked the wireless signal and it works fine.

    - Surface area quite limited in relation to the rental cost.
    - Ran into several cockroaches
    - Poor insulation (in terms of temperature)
    - Cleaning service too infrequent for extended stays.

    • Answer by:
      Accommodation Owner

      Dear Anael,

Thank you for staying with us. As far as cost versus space, I can only say that I am not sure if this is your first time to NYC but I beg to differ. I highly encourage you to stay in a hotel in the city and then see us.

As for a roach, we are very diligent in doing the annual check-up in all bugs with exterminator. Because this is NYC, throughout the year, we always have checkups. We do our part in that no one lives in the apartments so that we keep it clean with not having food lay around. We ask that when people come, they do not leave food around.

As you might know, NYC is not like the suburbs. All the buildings are next to each other. Believe it or not, they do find ways to come or sometimes rarely, people bring a passenger in their luggage. We cannot prevent these but we do our part because I also live in the building and am not a fan. Rest assured that I have taken of this problem and called someone.

In terms of poor insulation, I know this apartment personally and some people believe it is too warm. Their is a small strip for the skylight but it is not cold.

As for cleaning, first of all, their is no obligation for us to offer cleaning. We are not a hotel. When you stayed, I offered clean every week for free because I do that if people stay over a certain number of days.

If you were under an impression that this is a hotel where we come to clean everyday, then I am sorry for the mistake. I would have been happy to speak with you about paying for someone to come as often as you would like.

      Thank you.

      -Tony

Very small room (more adapted to a student than a couple). Blinds or curtains are needed to block the light (for those who cannot stand to be waken up at 06 in the morning). All that is needed is available.

To be noted : the help of the owner's assistant (Michelle) was great.

    Aug 01 2013
    • Answer by:
      Accommodation Owner

Thank you Louis. Sorry that you felt the room was small but that is life in New York. The size is laid out and it resembles that of a typical NYC hotel room. We have people commenting on the size about one in every 3 years but only if it is their first time in NYC or they compare it to their suburban home.

We have another 5 apartments that are larger should you be interested in paying more as the size was commensurate with the price. However, if is a fully functional apartment with a couch, desk and kitchenette.

As for the sky lighting, it just comes with the character of the room. Most people come with a mask or purchase one and 12pm is the same as 12am. We have no intention of changing the sky lighting because there is a benefit the other 18 hours of the day.

Very good value for the money for this vacation rental. The neighborhood is a bit off the tourist trail and as a result, it is very typical. Hospitality and tips are both excellent. The common areas are average but the building is charming.

The accommodation on the courtyard side protects from the noise from the city but not from the neighbors (wall). There is no way to make it dark. Perfect to go out and explore the city early in the morning!

Some minor downsides which in no way mar the pleasure to get there in the evening to have a rest.

    May 16 2013

Thank you Stephanie for staying. There is no way to make it pitch dark as we like the skylighting during the day. Maybe a sleeping mask would help.

As for sound from the other apartment, we insulate the walls but is it an apartment in NYC after all.

Vacation rental with an ideal location in New York. Several subway lines nearby. Its location on the garden side brings the peace and quiet you need after a day exploring the city. Tony's welcome was perfect, lots of material and city maps were provided. For our 15 day stay, the cleaning was done half way through the stay, the towels and sheets were changed.

I recommend this vacation rental to couples who wish for an authentic discovery of the city. Just the bathroom would deserve some redecorating.

Nothing to complain about regarding the accommodation owner's hospitality, he was very kind and helpful. The apartment is very small but has all the comforts. Surely the furnishings can be improved and, above all, the cleanliness (there were roaches).

    May 07 2012
    • Answer by:
      Accommodation Owner

All apartments are cleaned and inspected. NYC has roaches and buildings are next to each other. We spray every year. If food is left out, they will come. We know this because no one lives full time in our rentals. There is no food or edibles when they are not rented.

Roaches and cleanliness do not necessarily have anything to do with one another. You can put poison everywhere and they will still come if people leave food out. Your structural improvement suggestion will be taken under advisement.

The owner was extremely helpful and had some information printed out in the apartment for our benefit. As we were staying for 2 weeks, they kindly organised for the cleaner to come after 1 week and the place was immaculate, new sheets, bathroom cleaned and dishes washed.

The building is in a fantastic location, I had no idea the East Village was such a perfect place to stay with many restaurants, bars and small shops.

The accommodation was by no means anything flashy, but clean and comfortable. All the descriptions were accurate. It is a small apartment, but for 2 people on holidays who are not spending a lot of time in the apartment, it was perfect.

The only complaint I have which was no huge issue, was a kettle would have been useful rather than boiling water in a saucepan.

The person taking caring of the apartment was very nice and gave us useful tips. The neighborhood is great, the apartment was quiet, no honking cars but close to supermarkets, Starbucks, DD, KFC, McDo and the subway. We even get tulips when we arrived :)

Small studio apartment ideally situated in East Village, only 5 minutes away from the subway and in a lively neighborhood with many restaurants, bars and supermarkets. The accommodation is located in a small, very quiet building, overlooking a yard, which helps have restful nights, far but the street noise.

Although small, the accommodation offers nice facilities: the bathroom is spacious and well laid out; the kitchen corner provides everything you might need to prepare breakfast and a quick meal; quality bedding.

Tony's warm welcome when we arrived was a pleasure: I really want to point out host was extremely helpful, he replied to every single email we sent him before our trip and was always available for us when we were in New York. However, we were quite disappointed to see the cleaning had not been thoroughly done (especially in the bathroom and the restroom).

Also, although the apartment is nice, it could do with a little sprucing up (no ventilation grill in the bathroom, bare light bulbs in the living room...): such little details didn't stop up from having a very nice stay in New York and we would recommend this vacation rental to our relatives.

The owner's rep would like to let everyone know that he takes cleanliness issues very seriously and has made new arrangements for the apartment cleaning. He also made a note of the suggestions offered to improve the quality of the rental (lights, ventilation grills).

Apartment a bit small but sufficient for 2, comfortable and in a good location. The neighborhood is well served by subway and bus; and there are many restaurants as diverse as they are good. Very nice welcome from Tony who is as helpful as he's cheerful.

Apartment was great. Tony was on hand when we arrived to help us out, the notes and guides in the apartment were all very useful.

Location was handy and close to everything we needed. Building looked a bit off but that was understandable as work was being done on it and it didn't effect us at all.

The apartment was clean, comfortable and generally very quiet (the only noise we heard were coming from the street and the street was quiet for a New York street). It was also well situated (close to buses, subway, restaurants and convenience stores).

The person that welcomed us was very kind, generous, available and accommodating. He could easily be reached and he gave us a lot of information on how to get around in the city, where to find good restaurants and stores and other useful tips for first time travelers.

If we were to visit New York city again, we would probably choose to rent the same apartment.

Great apt very good location in a lively neighborhood with everything close by (bus, subway to main sites, restaurants, jazz clubs, supermarket...)

Accommodation very clean and just the right size for a couple Bedding very soft though, mind your back.

    Otherwise nothing to complain about

What's more, the owner is really very friendly and a great help upon arrival, departure, during your stay in NY (tips, guides and maps available).

I highly recommend this vacation rental.

The vacation rental is well located in East Village, a very nice neighborhood with the subway close by. The studio apartment is small but fully functional and totally matched our expectations. As it was a two-week stay, a cleaning lady came by to clean the accommodation, change the sheets and towels. WiFi is provided.

Nice stay. delightful owner who gave us useful tips and lent us a laptop. always available and responsive. Free phone for calls in the usa. Flat screen tv. Linens impeccable. No security deposit. Good email communication before our arrival.

Accommodation is very small, especially the kitchen (1 square m!!!) and most basic. electrics messy. for 2 who only have breakfast and don't bother cooking...

New coat of paint would be good.. a window handle could be changed and the shower would be better with a door rather than a curtain.

Torrential rain on the bow window woke us up as it was very noisy... but who to blame?!!!

Lovely vacation except for the weather!

A rental address to remember for another stay in New York. Thanks to Tony for his hospitality.

The apartment was very nice. We loved the position in the East Village. Close to the metro, to supermarket and all the bars and restaurants! It is well equipped with television, a small kitchen with everything you may need, a small closet, telephone, extra sheets and towels. Moreover we had a laptop and Internet connection with a small additional charge.

The man that showed us the studio was very friendly and helpful. He even gave us a great map of NYC. The price was good also. The only thing I didn't like was the cleanliness. When we went in, it wasn't dirty but not spotlessly clean either especially the kitchen (the refrigerator, the kettles, the plates) and the bathroom. In any case we would recommend that apartment 100%!

The East Village vacation rental apartment I rented was OK. Unfortunately the weather was so horribly hot, I think the air conditioner in this tiny place could be replaced. In hindsight I should have checked more into the apartment to make sure it was on the street side as I personally felt very closed in. I guess I like to see outside and see people. Just my personal choice.

My main complaint though would have been the neighbours right next to me - not sure what they were doing but there was so much banging going on there as if they were moving things all the time.

The apartment owner seemed really nice and was helpful.

We greatly enjoyed our visit to New York. Our [East Village] apartment was just as advertised: perfect location and it had everything we needed. Our host was very welcoming and helpful, even when we texted him at midnight to let him know that we had locked ourselves out of the building (oops). There were restaurant suggestions provided that were very good. The bed is a bit uncomfortable, but everything else was perfect.

Working with New York Habitat was also very easy. This trip was our second time

I had first a great time in New York!!

The apartment has a great location, restaurants, bars, shops and stores, metro access (10mn walk), perfect to feel a real New Yorker the time of our stay: with a strong American looking, great!

Inside it's not so big, but exactly what expected, perfect for a couple for a week: Peaceful, view on the back, small shower, TV, computer, bed could be better, clean, very friendly neighbors, books brochures and information's about everything in NY(very helpful!!), phone, free WIFI.

[The vacation rental owner's representative] has been our connection for the apartment, great guy, he resolved for us in 10mn the collect of basketball tickets for a match already sold...he has been present but not too much just perfect, only when we need. Thanks [...]!!

Conclusion I'll call you again for my next stay in New York

We had a wonderful stay in New York in the apartment we rented in the East Village. The owner of the apartment [...] was really nice and helpful. As a welcome "present", he gave us a very useful free map of New York and of the neighborhood including a long list of good restaurants, shops and bars in the area. Also he was always available for questions (we communicated via e-mail).

The studio itself was larger than expected, the bed was good, the bathroom and shower were clean and good as well and it was wonderful to have free wi-fi and a great television (which we didn't use). The only little thing I could complain about was the noisy steam heating which is probably typical for an old New York apartment - but we got used to that pretty soon.

The price of the apartment is definitely unbeatable for the location. I am very satisfied with New York Habitat and with my stay in the apartment in New York and will recommend it to friends and family whenever someone is looking for a place in New York, Paris or London. Thanks a lot.
