We really enjoyed this vacation rental. Some light renovation works would be necessary: windows closing, blinds, etc.

Thank you for staying with us, Guy! We are located in a Manhattan historic district so it is a very long process to get permission to upgrade windows. We just found out this week that the city approved our window replacement and so we will have new windows installed over the winter.

This is a mediocre neighborhood when you stay with a child, even if the person who came the next day to collect the money told us otherwise. It could use some major renovation works.

We live here with our family of four children, and we love it. There are many lovely restaurants, parks and cafes, all of which are warm and welcoming to children and families. We have lived here with young children for the past 10 years. Having lived in many Manhattan neighborhoods this is our favorite area and where we have chosen to raise our young family. Harlem isn't for everyone, but it is the right place for us. It is a beautiful, multi-cultural place. I am happy that most of our guests love and appreciate our neighborhood.

As we say in our ad, this is an old building in a historic district. Our rates are very low for a Manhattan apartment and that is because it is an old and unrenovated building -- we are very clear about this in our ad and description. Many people love our historic building, as do we. Please read our ad and research Manhattan neighborhoods before booking.

Best wishes to you.

Positive points: the apartment is well located, next to public transportation, in a nice and very charming Harlem building. Very clean condition. To be improved: the windows facing the street are hard to open, there is no curtain on the bedroom window, and the common areas smell bad.

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
Jul 19 2015

Thank you for staying with us, Nadege. We agree that our charming building is in an excellent location. As we are located in an historic district, we are unable to change our original wood windows -- they are sticky, but unless it is very humid they usually open and shut properly. The bedroom window does not have a curtain because it has wooden shutters. I apologize if you didn't realize that there are shutters which can block out the light in the bedroom. Finally -- we have a downstairs neighbor with a cat, and occasionally you can smell her cat as you walk past her apartment door in our common hallway. Unfortunately there is nothing that we can do about this, and we recommend that people who are very sensitive to cats look elsewhere for accommodation. Thank you again for staying with us.

This apartment is located in a townhouse, in a quiet Harlem street, a 15 minute ride from Times Square. This old building has cachet and offers a complete change of scene.
I would also like to say thank you to the person who welcomed us. Everything went well when we handed over the keys.
Good to know: bedroom 2 does not have shutters, so we slept with a sleeping mask.

Jul 24 2015

Thank you for sharing your feedback! With regards to the shutters, in the pictures, we show that there are only curtains, not shutters. Shutters are less common in the US than in some other countries. Glad to hear that you had such a great stay!

The sheets were not very clean, we found some hairs.
The building is very old, when it is windy the windows make a lot of noise and we could hear the neighbors upstairs all the time.
The sofa only opens when you sit on it.
The apartment would be great if it was renovated.
If you're not used to the people of the neighborhood it can seem dangerous, but we didn't have any problem, even walking around at 11pm.
The subway is very close, just a block away, which is great.
The best thing is the price.

In a great location, this accommodation is ideal for a family and enables you to become more familiar with Harlem life. Besides, the subway stations being close by, you can very quickly reach Midtown and Times Square, right in the heart of Manhattan. The hosts' book is a mine of information and the welcome is great. We had an excellent stay and thoroughly recommend this vacation rental.

Very pleasant, quiet apartment. Perfect for 4. The proximity of 2 subway lines was a great asset. Thanks to the hostess for the good addresses and her very nice welcome. The neighborhood is very pleasant. Going to Harlem Shake is a must! If you wish to attend a mass, make sure you get there very early, there are many tourists... in short: an unforgettable stay.

Thanks so much for staying with us, it was a pleasure to host your trip. Our building is old and historic, and from time to time you can hear our upstairs tenants as they walk through the building's central hallway -- we always ask our guests to keep the noise down and be respectful of others, but we can't always control that.

We are on a quiet street in a lovely neighborhood, and we agree that we offer a great value, particularly for guests who appreciate old architecture and historic neighborhoods.

The apartment is very well located in the proximity to the subway, shops and restaurants. The landlord is very nice and helpful.

The apartment is worn but works fine for overnight stay,. We had problems with the sewer system with multiple stops in the toilet, the landlord was helpful and courteous.

The apartment was poorly cleaned.

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
Apr 24 2014

Thank you for the review. I am surprised you felt that the apartment was worn; we never had complaints before, but I guess its a matter of preference. I am sorry you felt that the apartment was not as clean as you would have liked.

I spent the day before your arrival cleaning with the cleaning crew, but since you told us you would be coming a day early we had to scramble, so perhaps some things were missed even though I did check everything.

The toilet did get clogged up a few times on one of the days but we did get a plumber and luckily the issue was easily resolved.

I hope you enjoyed your trip!

The hosts are very friendly. We were five and we spent a one-week vacation in this apartment and wanted for nothing. We thought the neighborhood was quiet and nice to live in.

Small snag, the sofa bed is not very comfortable.. but, well, for a week, it's doesn't really matter!

Thank you for letting us know about the sofa bed -- it is basically a new sofa bed but we will look for a better mattress in the future, depending on our guests needs.

We have no complaints whatsoever about our stay. The apartment was perfect for our family stay and we loved the funky Harlem neighborhood. The subway was right around the corner and the owner left great suggestions and tips for grocery shopping, local attractions etc.

The fast wireless internet was a real bonus. We got very attached to our little apartment, felt right at home and enjoyed every moment of our stay.

We will be back and we'll be staying here again!

The apartment was rearly in a bad shape, i did not have value for my money and my wife and our kids are highly disaported. There are so many things that need to be put in place in the apartment.

Take for instance the building is so old, the doors are in a shape, the windows are bad without mosquitos net. We were eating up by all kind of flies , so much without airconditional, we were force to open our windows because of the heat. We have to contend with rats(rodent) every night of our stay.

Please, that apartment need to be put to a good shape and as for me i don't think that i will recommend that place for anybody.

Thank you for staying with us. There is a hair dryer and an iron in the wooden closet in the bathroom. I'm sorry that you didn't see those. I put my phone number on a bulletin board so that guests can call me if they have questions or can't find things! We have now renovated the apartment and the bathroom is no longer on the landing, it is incorporated into the apartment.

The accommodation is great and comfortable. Only big downside: a very strong smell of urine in the building staircase and in the apartment. We had to open the windows for a long time for the smell to go a little.

Otherwise, apart from this unpleasant and surprising smell, the accommodation is clean and well situated. However, the shower could do with some fixing as there's a problem with cold/hot water.

Thanks for your review! We are happy that you liked the apartment. We just renovated our floor plan so that the bathroom is enclosed in the apartment's interior hallway -- we think it is a nice improvement to the space!

Our downstairs tenant has a cat and unfortunately you can smell the cat from time to time when you enter and leave the building and in the
public hallway below the apartment. Unfortunately there isn't much we can do about this other than talk to our tenant.

We have adjusted the water --thanks for letting us know.

Vacation rental in Harlem at the level of 125th St, 2 min from the subway. Quiet location. Classic brownstone house from about 1880. The material is fine for the old house. The house and the accommodation have a great atmosphere. No luxury but absolutely fine. There is everything you may need. And the host is very friendly and helpful!!

Our return flight was at 8.30pm and the next guests already arrived at the apartment at 1pm. In the meantime we were allowed to leave our luggage with the host so we could enjoy the city for yet another day.

We appreciate your review, Nathalie. We regret that you will not recommend our apartment. We endeavor to provide clients with value for their money and this modest apartment is certainly for those who are not really looking to splurge.

The apartment building was built in the early 20th century. Thanks for your comments, we will be certain to perform more cleaning to ensure your issues will not be raised in the future.

We enjoyed the apartment atmosphere and location very much. A good point is that it seems quite easy to find a parking space in the street. The subway is within easy reach and besides, if you want to go on a Grayline bus tour, there is a stop uptown that is quite near.

A small downside is that the bathroom and the loo are on the landing but it's not too bad as there is only one apartment upstairs and hardly anyone ever stops by on the landing.

Communication with the owner was great, he is very friendly and always available by phone or over the Internet.

Thank you Ursula. We very much enjoyed having you stay with us. Since your visit we have renovated the apartment and now the floor plan has changed so that the bathroom is incorporated completely into the apartment -- it is no longer on the landing.

We think this is a huge improvement in the space. It is correct that there is parking readily available on the street. There is also a well-priced parking garage one block away. We hope to see this guest again soon!

We enjoyed having this guest. We had a very hot summer in New York and so we are putting more fans in the units. We usually stock the apartments with place-settings for 6, we will increase that to 10.
