Montmartre maintains its physical charm and the village atmosphere remains remarkably intact. The Moulin de la Galette can be seen from the apartment's window. The windmill was built in 1622 and was used for grinding wheat and pressing grapes. At the end of the century the mill became a famous dance hall and provided inspiration for artists like Renoir and Van Gogh. One of Paris's most picturesque squares is the Place des Abbesses with its original Art Nouveau metro station.
