The town of Sanary-Sur-Mer and its harbour are nearby and offer all kind of shopping: bakeries, groceries, Provencal markets ... Of course, there are many cafés and restaurants. Sanary sur Mer is a picturesque harbour-town, fiercely proud of its history and independence, Sanary is a charming coastal shelter and a thriving cottage-industry fishing port. Every morning, weather permitting, fishermen unload their catch of mullet or monkfish. During the season, divers return to shore with 'échinodermes', more commonly known as sea urchins, which always excite curiosity among the tourists and delight the locals. For those who know where to look, one can find as many treasures inland as on the shore; tasty and originally-shaped local vegetables, seasonal fruit filled with honey; golden apricots, succulent vineyard peaches and plump figs that, like the cherries, are only really exquisite when hand-picked in the early hours. One musn't forget the local, sweet muscat grapes and its vineyards which, thanks to the stubborness of a certain few, created the Bandol 'appellation'. If you are a regular visitor, you'll quickly notice that Sanary is active all year round; even in the middle of winter, 'Sanaryens' and other strollers meet on the quay, or on the promenade, to lounge and make the most of the sun. To the left, a lovely, shady promenade bordering a park; across the yacht's masts, you can glimpse the leafy banks leading up to the Notre Dame de Mai Church and the Island of Embiez; to the right, the shipyard at the foot ot the green hills of Portissol, at the top of which is perched a charming chapel which can be reached by the 'Montée de l'Oratoire', where you can view the whole bay. You can swim from May to October and choose from beaches of fine golden sands to colourful rocky coves for fishing. You can also discover various water sports in Sanary, windsurfing, water-skiing, sailing and deep-sea diving in the depths discovered long ago by world famous names. For walkers andhikers, there are many pleasant trails. Finally, Sanary is a town of culture which maintains its rich history; the Tour Romane houses the Frédéric Dumas Museum, one of the 'founders' of deep-sea diving, and many of the intellectuals who stopped here are acknowledged and acclaimed, and billings at the Theatre Galli are often of national and even international fame. Numerous art galleries display the work of local and famous artists as well as the thematic programs organised by the town hall and held throughout the year. Bandol is nearby it is actually one of the most important ports on the Var coast. Its reputation stems heavily from its wines. It's the ideal place to stay whether you taking a stroll down the famous promenade, visiting the islanders of Bendor or sampling the delights of Bandol's cuisine. The Zoo and Exotic Gardens hosts Mediterranean and tropical plants and animals including a large bird collection. Sanary is also located within short driving distance from Cassis which is also a lovely village. If you go north, the area is also famous for its wines, and the dominant feature of the local landscape is its vineyards. About 20- minutes drive to the east, the city of Toulon -Prefecture of the Var since 1974- used to be a place of transit for military convoys, passengers and goods but was partially destroyed during WW II. Its geographical location attracted the navy who settled here, as well as industrial activities. Thirty minutes drive to the west, Marseilles -Prefecture of the Bouches-du-Rhône- is an amazingly lively cosmopolitan city. The Phocean city was, and still is, an important artistic and cultural focal point in the region.
Access :
The closest highway exit is just 3 minutes drive from the house.: exit Sanry-Bandol on the A50. If you are coming by plane, the Toulon/Hyères Airport is approximately 40-45 minutes drive away, and has daily domestic flights from/to Paris, where most international flight connections are made through. Marseille Provence airport is 75 km away.
