The Southern French Alps are located to the north of the French Rivera in a mountainous region. In the Southern French Alps you can find everything from fields of lavender to glacier topped mountains. The views and scenery of the Southern French Alps are world renowned.

The Southern French Alps are primarily in 2 French departments: Hautes Alpes and Alpes de Haute Provence.

The Hautes Alpes department is high in the southern faces of the French Alps and includes parks located within the river valleys and mountains of the region.

The Parc des Ecrins occupies one of the largest and the highest summits in the Alps, its highest point is 4,102 meters above sea level but there are more than 150 peaks between 3,000 and 4,000 meters with in the park. The regional park of Queyras is dotted with many villages including St Veran, the highest village of France. The great lake of Serre-Ponçon is in the heart of the Hautes Alpes and provides a unique sea-side atmosphere next to natural mountain spaces.

The Hautes Alpes offers things to do in the summer and winter. In the winter the main activity is skiing at the many resorts including Serre Chevalier which includes over 250km of ski trails. In the summer you can take hikes through the mountains relax in the valleys or just take in the quieter life of the Alps.

Within the Alpes de Haute Provence department, which is closer to the French Riviera you will find more mountainous landscapes. The area is one of the least populated places in France so it is a great spot to find a private corner of the county for yourself. Within the area are several ski resorts, making it a popular winter destination. The Alpes de Haute Provence region changes significantly as you travel from north to south. Within a few kilometers you can travel from the foothills of the Alps to flat plains. Both the plant and animal life changes significantly as the altitude and climate change.

Within the Southern French Alps there are primarily houses and villas for rent. Vacation Rentals also include ski chalets near some of the resorts. The largest cities are Gap and Briançon where there are also some apartments available for vacation rentals.
