No matter the season, it offers a different side of the French capital. In winter, the Eiffel Tower\u2019s sparkling lights shimmer across the water after dark. Spring brings blooming riverbanks and leisurely walks across the city\u2019s historic bridges. During the summer, the banks of the Seine come alive with <\/span>Paris Plages<\/a>, transforming into an urban oasis with sandy beaches, outdoor activities, and places to relax by the water. In autumn, golden leaves drift along the river as sightseeing boats glide past centuries-old architecture. <\/span><\/p>\n

More than just a scenic waterway, the Seine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an essential part of the Paris experience. Whether you\u2019re admiring famous monuments from its bridges, enjoying a river cruise, or exploring the charming neighborhoods along its banks, the Seine offers some of the city\u2019s most unforgettable views. In this guide, we\u2019ll share what makes the Seine so special and highlight some of the best places to experience it during your visit to Paris.<\/span><\/p>\n

Seine River Facts<\/strong><\/p>\n

[Photo credit: Pixabay]<\/p><\/div>The Seine River is a total of 776 kilometers (482 miles) long, and flows from Source-Seine near Dijon to Le Havre and into the English Channel. From Le Havre, nearly 120 kilometers (75 miles) of the Seine River still remain navigable for large ocean-going ships. Almost the entire length of the Seine is navigable by regular-sized riverboats, and recreational boats can be found across the entire length of the River.<\/p>\n

In Paris, the Seine used to be a shallow river with sandy banks. However, over the years locks were installed to raise the water level, and nowadays there are no more natural sandy banks left in the city. The river depth is also tightly controlled, and averages 9\u00bd meters (31 feet).  Nonetheless, the Seine has flooded Paris on numerous occasions, some even recently. For example, in 2003 the water level rose so quickly that about 100,000 works of art, which were stored underground, were moved out of the city. Paris hadn\u2019t seen a relocation of art of this scale since the Second World War.<\/p>\n

\u00cele de la Cit\u00e9 and \u00cele Saint-Louis<\/strong><\/p>\n

Both lie in the center of Paris, in between the Rive Droite and Rive Gauche, known as the Right Bank and Left Bank of the Seine River. The two islands are connected to the mainland by numerous bridges. Pont Saint-Louis connects the two islands, and you can often find many street musicians and other performers on the bridge<\/span>.
\n\u00cele Saint-Louis is largely residential while also being home to many excellent restaurants<\/span>. The island has a main road that runs from west to east: Rue Saint-Louis en l\u2019\u00cele. Here you can find most of the island’s restaurants, as well as the famous ice-cream parlor Berthillon. If you explore the narrow streets of \u00cele Saint-Louis, cross Pont Saint-Louis to the more famous \u00cele de la Cit\u00e9. \u00cele de la Cit\u00e9 houses some of Paris\u2019 best-known landmarks: the Notre Dame, Sainte-Chapelle, Pont Neuf and more.<\/p>\n

All of these landmarks are well worth visiting, but there are also some lesser-known spots on the island where you can see amazing views of the river. For example, behind Notre-Dame Cathedral is Square Jean XXIII, a beautiful garden beside the Seine that extends to the southeastern point of the island<\/span>. This is called Square Jean XXIII, and runs to the most southeastern point of the island. You can find an even quieter park on the other side of the island west of Pont Neuf. If you stand on this bridge, you can see a triangle-shaped small park called Square du Vert-Galant beneath you. Stairs next to the Henry IV statue lead to this tiny green haven. Here you will get one of the best views of the Seine River in Paris. It\u2019s lovely to pack a picnic and have it right on the edge of the island, while taking in the splendid views.<\/p>\n

The Ponts of the Seine River<\/strong><\/p>\n

In total, there are 37 bridges within Paris that span the Seine River. Two of the most famous are the aforementioned Pont des Arts and Pont Neuf. Each bridge has its own history and character, making them attractions in their own right.<\/span><\/p>\n

  • The Pont des Arts (pin 1) is the first bridge west of Pont Neuf. The Pont des Arts is a pedestrian bridge linking the Institut de France on the Rive Gauche with the Louvre on the Rive Droite.<\/span> Although the famous love locks are no longer attached to the bridge, the Pont des Arts remains one of the best places to enjoy panoramic views of the Seine<\/span>.<\/span> To the east you\u2019ll have a splendid view of the \u00cele de la Cit\u00e9 and Pont Neuf, while to the west you can catch a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower.<\/li>\n
  • Pont Neuf (pin 2) has a bit of a deceptive name, as it\u2019s actually the oldest bridge in Paris. The River Seine flowing through the ancient arches makes a great picture.<\/li>\n
  • Another very picturesque bridge is the Pont Alexandre III (pin 3). This ornate bridge connects the Grand Palais with Les Invalides.<\/span> Built in 1900, the bridge is easily recognized for its Art Nouveau-inspired decorations, including statues of cherubs and nymphs.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Two bridges that are less ornate but nonetheless still impressive are Pont Saint-Michel (pin 4) and Pont Notre Dame (pin 5). A collective of Parisian architects, who imagined the bridge with only three arches, designed Pont Saint-Michel. Lastly, Pont Notre Dame is famed because it stands on the exact spot where the first bridge in Paris ever crossed the Seine River. The metal bridge standing today, however, dates back to 1919.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
