Summer<\/strong> is upon us in New York City, and with the warmer weather comes a whole host of outdoor activities, performances<\/strong>, festivals<\/strong>, and special events to coax New Yorkers out of their apartments. Speaking of apartments, why not seize the summer season\u2019s chance to rent your own small piece of New York\u2019s expansive landscape? Because a New York summer has such a bountiful selection of things to do and experience, it\u2019s a peak time to visit\u2014which also means increased hotel rates. First thing\u2019s first: no one wants to be cooped up inside on summer\u2019s sunniest days! Whatever type of outdoor<\/strong> adventure suits your taste, you can find something to do in New York to satisfy it. Of course, when most people think of summertime, they think of going to the beach<\/strong>. NYC has multiple beaches and seaside attractions<\/a> that are just a subway ride away from anywhere in the five boroughs. Visit Coney Island<\/strong> in Brooklyn to experience New York\u2019s most iconic beach, complete with carnival rides and food that make it a great family destination<\/a>. For something more laid-back, try Rockaway Beach<\/strong> in Queens or Orchard Beach<\/strong> in the Bronx. It seems like a given, but be sure to check out New York\u2019s parks<\/strong> this summer too. Bryant Park<\/strong> hosts free activities all summer, including film screenings, dance classes, outdoor games, and more. Prospect Park<\/strong> is Brooklyn\u2019s gem for hikers, picnickers, and bird-watchers. Hudson River Park<\/strong> is excellent for sporty types, offering yoga classes, pick-up Frisbee games, miles of space for runners, and wonderful views of its namesake.<\/p>\n

Finally, don\u2019t miss the star, Central Park, as great in summer as it is year-round<\/a>. In addition to boating<\/strong>, biking, and scenic walks, you can also join the lottery for tickets to the park\u2019s beloved Shakespeare in the Park<\/strong> performances, running from May 21 thru August 11. These free, open-air stage shows give Broadway a run for its money as the most highly revered New York theatre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

New York may not always be something out of a musical, but in the summer there are plenty of opportunities to see some live music. Of course, there\u2019s SummerStage<\/strong>, a city-wide series that hosts free concerts across genres<\/a> in New York\u2019s parks all summer long. Celebrate Brooklyn!<\/strong> (June 4 thru August 6) is another free concert series in Prospect Park, with occasional ticketed shows for larger acts.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re a fan of classical music<\/strong> (or just want to experience an unforgettable night in Central Park), attend NYC Philharmonic in the Parks<\/strong> on June 12. The renowned orchestra puts on a free show to Central Park\u2019s Great Lawn for an evening that\u2019s quintessentially NYC. The concerts are also hosted in other parks around the city from June 11 thru 16.<\/p>\n

For something more off-beat, check out MoMA PS1 Warm Up<\/strong>, an outdoor music series at the MoMA PS1 in Queens<\/a>. The series showcases concerts by rising artists in a fun party atmosphere every Saturday in July and August for $18 advance, $22 at the door.<\/p>\n

Finally, festival fans can\u2019t miss New York City\u2019s famous summer music festival<\/strong>, The Governor\u2019s Ball<\/strong>! This musical juggernaut hosts 3 days\u2019 worth of live performances on Randall\u2019s Island, with this year\u2019s headliners of Tyler the Creator, Lil Wayne, Florence + The Machine, The Strokes, and Nas. Another great way to experience New York City life is to get out on the streets and celebrate with locals during one of the summer\u2019s annual street parades<\/strong>! Don\u2019t miss one of the most raucous celebrations of the year at the Puerto Rican Day Parade<\/strong> on June 9. The city\u2019s Puerto Rican population gathers along 5th Avenue in Manhattan for a celebration of Puerto Rican pride and culture, the largest of its kind in the country.<\/p>\n

A jubilant celebration of the arrival of summer, this parade encourages participants to don their best, most glittery mermaid apparel and march through the Coney Island Boardwalk. Make sure to make your way to the culturally rich neighborhood of Harlem<\/a> as well: Harlem hosts its own celebration in honor of Pride Month every year, including film screenings, concerts, memorial events and more. Best of all, the event is completely free!<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re looking for more free things to do in New York, don\u2019t miss the Museum Mile Festival<\/strong> on July 11. This one-day event takes shape with a massive block party<\/strong> along 5th Avenue from 82nd to 110th Streets, with the famous institutions of the Museum Mile<\/a> (including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and more) opening their doors to the public!<\/p>\n
