So what makes Chinatown so special?\u00a0 Let\u2019s find out.<\/p>\n<p>Chinatown is located on the East Side of Lower Manhattan, more or less between <a title=\"Travel tips about SoHo, NY\" href=\"\/blog\/category\/new-york\/new-york-travel-guide\/new-york-neighborhoods\/soho\/\">SoHo<\/a>, the <a title=\"Lower East Side, NY, Travel Guide\" href=\"\/blog\/category\/new-york\/new-york-travel-guide\/new-york-neighborhoods\/lower-east-side\/\">Lower East Side <\/a>and the <a title=\"Tips about the Financial District, NY\" href=\"\/blog\/category\/new-york\/new-york-travel-guide\/new-york-neighborhoods\/financial-district\/\">Financial District<\/a>.\u00a0 It\u2019s constantly growing, over taking other neighborhoods and changing, but as of now it is roughly bordered by Broome Street to the North, Broadway to the West, Worth Street and East Broadway to the South, and Essex Street to the East.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><object width=\"592\" height=\"469\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/tFOrThNwCh4&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed width=\"592\" height=\"469\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/tFOrThNwCh4&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" \/><\/object> <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Click above to watch this video: Video Tour of Chinatown, New York.(5:02)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chatham Square:<\/strong><br \/>\nWhat better place to start our tour of Chinatown than in Chatham Square.\u00a0 Once a large open air market in the early 1800\u2019s, it became a center for tattoo parlors, flophouses, and saloons in the mid 1800\u2019s, but today has turned into a major intersection in Chinatown.\u00a0\u00a0 You\u2019ll find the Kimlau Memorial Arch dedicated to Chinese Americans in the name of freedom and democracy.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chinatown&#8217;s History and Landmarks:<\/strong><br \/>\nOn Mott Street, just a few blocks away from Chatam Square, is where in 1858 the Cantonese businessman, Ah Ken, became the first Chinese to immigrate to Chinatown.\u00a0 He eventually opened a successful cigar shop and from that point on, a steady stream of Chinese started settling in the area.<\/p>\n<p>When the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 was enacted the Chinese population in this small neighborhood exploded.\u00a0 Today Chinatown\u2019s population is estimated around 100,000.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The MoCA:<\/strong><br \/>\nYou may have heard of New York\u2019s famous museum, <a title=\"The MoMA, Museum of Modern Art: a Must-See in New York! Discover this amazing place on that article of our Blog\" href=\"\/blog\/2008\/06\/11\/the-museum-of-modern-art-in-new-york-city-a-great-place-to-visit-on-vacation\/\">the MoMA<\/a>, but while you\u2019re in Chinatown, be sure to visit the MoCA, the Museum of Chinese in America.\u00a0 At the museum, you\u2019ll learn more about the history and culture of Chinese America.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Columbus Park:<\/strong><br \/>\nColumbus Park is the largest park in Chinatown and it is a meeting place for locals. If you&#8217;re a morning person, wander around Columbus Park and you&#8217;ll get to see locals gathering for Tai Chi. While passing by during the afternoon, you&#8217;ll find fortune tellers and people playing table games. Moreover, many festivals and outdoor events are organized there every summer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mahayana Buddhist Temple:<\/strong><br \/>\nA visit to Chinatown wouldn\u2019t be complete if you don&#8217;t go to The Mahayana Buddhist temple. Inside you\u2019ll find the largest Statue of Buddha rests there seated on a lotus flower.
