Fortunately there are some sandy escapes right in NYC that serve as a welcome alternative to the concrete jungle.\u00a0 Enjoy a cool breeze coming in off the water and BBQ-style food at one of three Water Taxi Beaches, located in Long Island City, South Street Seaport and Governors Island.<\/p>\n<p>All along the East and Hudson Rivers, <strong>yellow-checkered water taxis zip through the waterways.<\/strong> These taxis, owned by the New York Water Taxi Company, serve commuters and sightseers alike. In 2005, the company opened a man-made beach in Long Island City, <a title=\"Travel Guide to Queens, NY\" href=\"\/blog\/category\/new-york\/new-york-travel-guide\/queens\/\">Queens<\/a>, hauling in over 1,000 tons of sand. The free beach \u2013 just a 4-minute water taxi ride from Midtown &#8212; was an instant hit. Although swimming isn\u2019t allowed, beachgoers can enjoy burgers, hotdogs and tropical drinks from \u201cHarry\u2019s @Water Taxi Beach\u201d while looking at the sweeping Manhattan skyline.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This May, Manhattan got it\u2019s own Water Taxi Beach, located at the South Street Seaport next to Pier 17. <\/strong><strong>It is located in the <a title=\"Apartment rentals in the Financial District, NY\" href=\"\/new-york-apartment\/furnished\/manhattan\/financial-district\">Financial District, a hip neighborhood offering convenient and central\u00a0apartment\u00a0rentals<\/a>.<\/strong> Dotted with picnic tables and palm trees, the sandy beach also has a 9-hole miniature golf course, skeeball and ping pong tables. Not to be outdone by Harry\u2019s, the Seaport location serves up beach eats at the Fish Shack and Raw Bar. At night, DJs spin music while partygoers dance against the backdrop of <a title=\"Discover the Brooklyn Bridge Walk: one of the famous New York City activities on the New York Habitat Blog\" href=\"\/blog\/2009\/05\/08\/best-springtime-activities-nyc-brooklyn-bridge-walk\/\">the Brooklyn Bridge<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"img alignleft size-full wp-image-3391\" style='width:300px;'>\n\t<img src=\"https:\/\/www.nyhabitat.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/blog1.jpg\" alt=\"Water Taxi Beach\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/>\n\t<div>Water Taxi Beach<\/div>\n<\/div>A third Water Taxi Beach just opened in July on Governors Island, a tiny island located in New York Harbor less than a half-mile from <a title=\"Travel Guide to Battery Park and TriBeCa, NY\" href=\"\/blog\/category\/new-york\/new-york-travel-guide\/new-york-neighborhoods\/tribeca\/\">Battery Park<\/a> in Lower Manhattan. With more than 300 tons of sand, as well as basketball and volleyball courts and live music, there are more than enough reasons to check out the newest location of WTB.
