All three are capitals of the world in art, culture, fashion and business. But there’s still something else.

Tennis, anyone?

New York, London, and Paris are the host cities of the three most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world. There are four “grand slam” tournaments, beginning with the Australian Open in Melbourne in January. But while that event has gained in popularity over the years, it still lags just behind the other three in terms of prestige and worldwide popularity. The grand slam season in tennis really gets going with The French Open in May/June, continues with Wimbledon in June/July, and culminates with The U.S. Open in August/September in Queens.

And before I offend anyone, let me acknowledge my American shorthand. To most Europeans, the proper name of “The French Open” is merely Roland Garros (where the event is played) and Wimbledon is more properly The Championships. The U.S. Open is just The U.S. Open, but it’s still a whole lot of fun!

This year’s U.S. Open runs from August 29 through September 11. Tickets are still available here. All the world’s best players are scheduled to participate, including stars from The U.S., France and Great Britain. American James Blake, who grew up in New York, has recovered from injuries and just cracked the top 5 in the world rankings. French star Amelie Mauresmo is number one in the women’s division and will seek a U.S. Open crown to go with the Wimbledon title she won last month. And the rapidly improving Andy Murray, who hails from Scotland but has been adopted by England, hopes to wave the flag for Great Britain.

So why not book a last minute trip to New York to enjoy the fun? New York Habitat still has great vacation rentals available in Queens as well as apartment rentals in Manhattan (the tournament grounds are conveniently accessed by the #7 train line from Times Square), where you can also enjoy everything else the City has to offer. There are some convenient vacation rentals in New York including:

A Bed and Breakfast in Astoria, Queens (NY-12198)

or

A 1-bedroom apartment in Midtown East (NY-14517)

And it’s not too early to start thinking about next year.
