85,000 professional and amateur runners are already scheduled to participate. And there may still be time to join them. While general applications for this year\u2019s race are no longer being accepted, there is a special offer that is currently still available<\/strong> on the event\u2019s official website (www.nycmarathon.org<\/a>). A certain number of guaranteed entries are being held for participants who will agree to run the race as a means of raising money for one of the charities selected by the event. So you can not only have the thrill of running the marathon, but you can get the added rush of knowing that you are helping others. Fortunately, for those of us who want to participate but are not ready to run a marathon, there are sweat-free alternatives. Volunteers who are interested in participating in various aspects of the event operations should check out the site and click on \u201cThe Event\/Volunteers\u201d. In addition to being able to say they helped run one of the City\u2019s most prestigious annual events, all volunteers will receive souvenir shirts and ponchos. Don\u2019t want to run or work<\/em>? You can also purchase tickets for the celebratory Finish Line Banquet at Tavern on the Green in Central Park. Or, free of charge, you can join the other two million New Yorkers and tourists who will be staked out at different locations all around the City to watch parts of the race.
