About: Aix-en-Provence

Aix-en-Provence is a historic town in the Provence region of the South of France founded by the Romans over 2000 years ago. The cities name Aix came from the thermal spring which passes through the town and is one of the city's top attritions. Aix-en-Provence was the historical capital of Provence from the 12th to 15th centuries and has a rich history as a result. The city's heritage is visible in the ancestral customs which still occur during public events and family celebrations.

With such a rich history Aix has produced many architecturally important buildings including the main cathedral, “Le Bourg Saint Sauveur” which is located in the ancient Roman part of the city. Also within the Roman quarter is the famous Clock Tower, which serves as city hall. Within the old quarters, traces of the old medieval ramparts remain visible.

You should not come to Aix-en-Provence without traversing the Cours Mirabeau. It is a main avenue created in the mid 17th century which featuring cafes, town houses, tree lined sidewalks and grand fountains.

The ring road, created on the site of the old city walls surround the old quarters and remain the separation between the old and new city.

The Mazarin district was designed in the seventeenth century by the Archbishop Mazarin, brother of the Cardinal. Truly a “district of luxury” for parliamentarians and leading citizens of the time, it is organized around two main axes: rue Cardinale and Rue du 4 Septembre. Here you will find small shops and cafes as well as some of Aix-en-Provence's most exclusive homes.

Aix-en-Provence offers many cultural events throughout the year including the International Festival of Lyric Art in July.
