Too bad, there was a construction site just behind our building, construction work started at 7 am. But other than that, it was good.

Outside construction is beyond our property and building control. Yet, it's necessary for the renewal of any neighborhood. There is no place where construction does not happen to better a community. Thank you for your review.

Highly recommended apartment in good location at the homely East Village: shopping facilities and short walks to busses 14A, 14D and 9.
User-friendly facilities and very friendly contact with helpful owners. No view (i.e. backyard), but we were out and about during the day anyway. Beds and Wifi really good.

Had a fantastic stay in this apartment! The owner was so lovely and friendly and if I had any questions at all, she was more than happy to help. The apartment looks exactly like the photos and having stayed in NYC before, I really appreciated that it's also really quiet at night, you can not hear any neighbours or noise from clubs etc which makes it easy to sleep, plus the sofa bed was one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept on! Great location in the East Village and I have already started recommending it and the owners to my family and friends! Will definitely come back and stay again and thanks so much to the owners for such a positive, welcoming experience :)

Very good communication with the landlady. She gave us all the necessary directions when we arrived and perfectly fulfilled our needs. She was very discreet. The apartment is well located in East Village. Very well-equipped. Decoration is a bit too fussy. Housekeeping leaves a lot to be desired!...When you pay $50 for this service, you expect a bit more perfection!...Air conditioning is very noisy.

Answer by: B&B Host
Aug 24 2016

Thank you for your review, Cecile and Nathalie.

It is unfortunate that you were displeased with the" bit too fussy décor ". It is exactly what is shown on the NY Habitat website listing that you viewed and chose, selected my apt from, which is not going to change, since this is our home and not a hotel : )

In regards to the air conditioner noise, we thought we had addressed the A/C noise with you together, during your stay. You seemed to have been satisfied knowing that it was not my air conditioner making the loud noises, but the noises was coming from all of my many neighbours A/C units in the building. Keep in mind that it is summer time and air conditioners are in common use during this hot season : )

We pride ourselves in presenting and providing a healthy, clean, spotless , tidy, safe home environment for ourselves and our welcome invited guests : )

Yes, hotels and motels offer daily "housekeeping services" if that type of catering service is what you want and are seeking (vacuuming, change of towels and bed linens, removal of trash on a daily everyday bases for you): )

Hotel housekeeping services and exit cleaning fees are two different things.

A cleaning charge does not cover the excessive mess that is left behind (such as unflushed toilet, hair left in the sink and tub drains, dishes, mugs, glasses utensils left in the sink and mounds of garbage piled up :( )

$50 may be a lot outside NYC but it is not here : ) .

Sally is very kind and always helpful. She lives next door, so all one needs to do is knock on her door.
The apartment is comfortable and practical and the kitchen is equipped with a fridge and all kinds of appliances. The bathroom is small, but the bathtub is very comfortable. In general, the apartment is not big, but it is ideal for two people. There are also AC and two televisions.
The closest subway stop is 1km away. The neighborhood has many bars and restaurants, and it is safe at night. It is an excellent deal, considering the location (in Manhattan) and the great price.
Thank you again Sally for being so kind and helpful.

The landlady welcomed us very warmly. The apartment is located on the first floor and is a bit dark. You can't open the windows. What a shame. Quiet street. Lively neighborhood next to a nice public garden. Buses and Citi Bikes are very close. Subway is a 10-minute walk. We recommend this place.

Thank you Joelle and Michel for your review.
It is surprising news that you had trouble with the windows. All the windows in the flat are in excellent working order, operational and easily accessible. Upon your arrival, we did an initial apartment orientation with you. A verbal and visual demonstration was given to you on how to turn on and off the stove, the lights, the televisions, the a/c , the use of wi-fi and most importantly how to open and close the windows and window shades in the flat. Access to the windows and window shades is a "simple" up and down motion/ movement at your desired leisure. The windows all have screens which allow you to open as wide or as little as you needed. Yes, it is a shame that our demonstration with you was not retained " you had forgotten how to " slide open the windows and the window shades Up and Down to allow for the natural sunlight and outdoor air to come into the apartment. Since we were your next door neighbors, we were available to assist you at any time. Simply, knock on our door and we would have happily aided you with whatever your issues maybe. It was strange, upon your departure, to find the windows and window shades in the apartment were left wide open to catch the fresh breeze and natural light!
Thank you for staying with us and recommending our place.

Thank you for your review. Sorry to hear that our home was not large enough for you and your family.
Also, sorry to hear that the saucepan set which was purchased 9 months ago did not suit your needs either.
If you are particular about the type of saucepan used, you are always welcomed to bring your own.
In your future travels ,you may want to rethink your choices that would be more suitable for your family size.
NY Habitat has many other accommodations that may be more to your liking and your special needs.

We had a very good stay in Sally and Carle's apartment, from October 18 to October 28, 2015. The East Village area is great, filled with small restaurants, a few steps from Tompkins Square Park. It is a pleasant neighborhood with a supermarket 2 minutes away and close to the L metro line. The building is old but the apartment is very nicely equipped, clean and functional. We had everything we needed (for Europeans, think about bringing adaptors for outlets). Sally will give you free access to wifi, which is a very good advantage if you want to give news to your family or make free calls... Very quiet neighborhood, the apartment does not overlook the street so it is a bit dark, but it was not an issue as we were out most of the day. The bed is very comfortable, we slept well after walking many kilometers in New York City. Sally took care of us, she was discreet and helpful when we had questions. Even if she does not speak French, it is very easy to speak with her in a "basic" English... The L line is just a 10 minutes' walk away (when walking quietly through the park). Take the L line at the corner of 1st Avenue and 14th Street... You will be in Union Square in 2 minutes and can take metro lines that go through Manhattan. We are very very happy about our stay in this apartment, which was less insipid than a hotel, less expensive and so much nicer (we felt like locals). You can definitely rent this apartment... If we ever come back to New York City, we already know where we will be staying....
Thank you Sally, see you soon,

Julien and Anne (Grenoble, France).

The apartment was very clean, all amenities were in place including a room safe, towels, pots, pans, kitchen utensils, iron, ironing board, air conditioning and the kitchen and bathroom fixtures were like new. It was very comfortable and homey.
The location wasn't too bad, it's just that it's a good distance away from subway lines.. kind of a dead zone if you were in a rush, but the walks were great, close to the park.
The building entrance was unusally small, uncomfortable and impossible for two persons to enter at the same time. The hallways were even smaller along with the staircase. A really tight squeeze all until you get in your room. Difficult carrying any luggage bigger than a carry-on through it, including groceries. Other than that. A great stay.

Answer by: B&B Host
Aug 27 2014

We thank you for letting us know you had a comfortable, homey great stay with us. We agree with you that the amount of enormous oversized suitcases can make it difficult and tight for you to manage the building hallway and staircase leading to the apartment. Oh yes absolutely , a 15 minute walk, run or jog to the subway lines or catch the bus just 2 minutes around the corner then connecting to subway lines is a common NYC way of life, a New York state of mind, and welcome to the New York experience !!!! : )

The place is spotless, Sally is a doll and so helpful, the neighborhood is bustling with life, the location is easily accessible even if you don't want to walk, mta network is great and I didn't find the location an issue.

You will find the apartment exactly as if you were a cousin coming to visit. Everything is provided for, even q tips for the airheads !!! Sally lives next door and goes out of her way to help you, even with tips about visiting the city.

Our new friend Nathalie was the PERFECT guest to have visit us!We greatly appreciated her very CLEAR and GOOD understanding of what polite, neat , tidy, clean and quiet company is all about. We loved her independence and boldness in venturing this big Gotham City alone as a female.

Thank you for mentioning the lamp. There is a bedside lamp on the window ledge beside the sofa bed for evening reading. As well, the overhead ceiling fan light can be dimmed , if too bright for reading. Maybe, it was missed or maybe re- positioning would help.

We would definitely welcome Nathalie back to our home ! Stay in touch, girlfriend : ) !!

Overall positive experience, nice lively neighboorhood and clean apartment; the latter w/ the downside of a very intense smell (desinfectant/ repellant)causing nausea and eye swelling increasing over the period of the stay.

Close surveillance by the owners and notes throughout the apartment instructing on behavior (daily removal of trash, clean tub after showering etc.) were experienced as annoying and restriction of privacy. Space of the apartment esp. bathroom a bit limited e.g. very little/tiny access to bathroom sink w/ limited space to wash or brush teeth.

Exterior appearance of building and stairway poor and run down, requiring improvement.

Answer by: B&B Host
May 18 2013

Sorry to hear you did not approve of the superintendent's mopping solutions used on cleaning the public common hallways. Eco friendly bio degradable products are used during this process. Cleaning the hallways frequently is a must. Disinfectant solutions and repellents are used as preventative measures. General maintenance and overall cleanliness is important.

Yes indeed, notes or house rules are posted throughout the flat to remind our guests whats necessary to keep our guests safe & comfortable. Again, the cleanliness, safety & well being of our home is important to us and our guests. Sorry that you found this annoying and intrusive of your privacy.

I agree with you that the building is old and dated and needs updating. The H.O.A. is working on the improvements overtime.

Thank you for choosing our home for your vacation experience.

This apartment we rented was functional and have all possible requirements, and have enough room to sleep 4 adults.

The main very positive points are:

- The apartment is adjacent to the owners' (Sally and Carle). So any extra that you may need, even asking about extra-rental issues, they are there to assist you in every possible way.

- Thanks to their fantastic help all the time, we have become friends. They are always ready to go out of their way to help. One example, that when we were leaving the flat with 8 pieces of luggage (among which 4 were really heavy), Carle insisted to carry them on my behalf and waited to greet us at the van door. Unbelievable kindness.

- The only small negative issue is that it is about 25 min walk to the nearest subway station, but I think the bus stop is much nearer. And taxis are inexpensive in NYC. Strongly suggest anyone who wants to have a pleasant domicile in NYC, to stay there.

Such a beautiful family. It was our pleasure to host you. You left the apartment in immaculate condition, as it was given to them. Couldn't ask for better friends or neighbors.

Lots of walking happens in NYC. There are 3 subway stations located in the East village neighborhood and bus stops on every street /avenue . All approximately 5 - 25 minutes away, depending on how fast, slow, youthful or energetic that one wishes to be.

City living is all about the "walking experience". NYC definitely gives you a good work out. We urge all to embrace this experience when they visit.

We spent 3 wonderful days in NYC! The apartment was great, very clean. We could also use the internet, what was very helpful!

The Subway-station was a cupple blocks away, was a little long to walk with the 3-years old child - but the stroller helped :)

We would definetly rent here again.

The owner was very welcoming and very nice. The only downside at this place is the very unpleasant smell in the building hall. Otherwise everything was perfect, the apartment is very well equipped and easy to live in.

We are very thankful for this kind review. It was a pleasure to be this guest's host. Glad she enjoyed her stay with us. Her comments are important to us.

The odor stems from Condo-Coop owners or renters with pets in the building. They do not curb their pets very well. We have brought it to the attention of the building Coop/Condo Board management and janitorial crew.

They are working on more frequent janitorial services and a more permanent solution.

- Apartment was clean, tidy and equipped with all amenities as described on the website
- Owners impeccably courteous, kind and helpful
- Perfect welcome at the apartment also "adapted" with solutions to receive the little 2 and a half year old guest (kitchen safety, little stool so he could reach the washbowl etc.)

- The little issues were resolved promptly
- Only flaw: the (sofa) beds are a little uncomfortable

We are thankful for these comments. We are sorry to hear these guests were not pleased with the bed. Big surprise to hear this because all the furniture & appliances within the unit were bought new and are all under a year old.

It is 2 firm sofa beds as mentioned in my apt. profile, advertised with photos. The furniture serves two purposes: it can be used as sofa and/or a bed whichever the guests may need it to be at the time.

Our trip to New York was fantastic & the accommodation was amazing. The apartment was clean & cozy & is in a great location. There are buses & the subway close by & lots of restaurants, bars & one-of-a-kind shops in the neighbourhood.

Renting an apartment was so much nicer than staying in a hotel & made us feel like "real New Yorkers" for our short stay. We definitely recommend this property.

This quiet and modern space was not only cheaper than a hotel, but much more enjoyable. Ideal for solo travelers or a couple. The exterior building and hallways could use cleaning and updating but the apartment itself is quite modern and clean.

Everything you could need for a long term stay is provided and the owner is very accommodating of any needs. The owner is also very pleasant and lives in the same building should you need something. A security deposit was required and though it was a bit steep ($500 cash), it was promptly returned to me in cash on my last day without any hassle.

This is a great location with access to lots of neighborhood shops and services as well as access to plenty of public transit. Safety was never a concern. Should future needs require me to be in town for a longer period of time again, this place will be my first resource for housing.

Our owner was wonderful. The apartment was so organized, and we had everything we needed. She was very reliable and was there if we needed anything. The only criticism is that there was a lot of noise on some nights that was very audible from the spare bed, it came from adjacent apartments. I'm not sure there is anything that could be done about that, but it was an irritation. The building entrance itself could also do with some work.

But other than that, the apartment was perfect for our stay. The location was great too, right near Tompkins Square Park, and close to lots of great restaurants.

I would definitely stay here again.

The noise from the adjacent apartment was because the apartment next door had a party during this rental period. The owner assured that this is not a common occurrence. The owner has forwarded the feedback of the building entrance to the board of the building and will also bring it up at the next board meeting.

The apartment was exactly as it was described. Although small, it was fine for 2 people. Very clean and well kept. Nice touches such as shampoo, conditioner and soap. Owner is very accomodating, friendly and helpful but not overbearing. We had a great stay.
