Description
Studio Vacation in Harlem (NY-12976)
Studio, 1 Bathroom - Sleeps

Located in Central Harlem, New York City, this fully furnished alcove studio can be found on the top floor of a late 19th century 3-story walk-up brownstone. This floor was converted into two autonomous studios from four previous rooms composing this unit, while the owners still reside on the lower floors. The main entrance and the stairways will then be shared with the owners and the other studio tenant, and a common area on the parlor level welcomes any of the tenants to relax for a moment.

The first room you see upon entering is the living area and its window giving south, overlooking the nearby street. Following there the bright and snazzy colors that provide lively features to the whole room you can gain access to the sleeping alcove, where a full-sized bed is waiting for you. You will certainly enjoy the air conditioning that cools the apartment, or, in the winter, an electric fireplace to feel cozy; there's also easy chairs to relax on and a closet for storage. The separate kitchen has amenities such as a coffee maker and a toaster oven and hot plates. The apartment also has a WiFi Internet connection running during your stay.

This apartment, being situated in the historic landscape of Harlem in Manhattan, an area that has gone through a significant renaissance which still has hints of its previous era, you will be in the center of a vibrant jazzy community combined with classic brownstones and historic buildings. You can still dine in fine restaurants as near as 5 blocks away, such as Chez Lucienne where you will find an authentic touch of French cuisine, or Mobay New York for the Indian equivalent. To get an approach to the culture behind the area, just walk to the nearby Studio Museum in Harlem (3 blocks) or take a stroll along Morningside Park (3 blocks) to have an overview of the Columbia University and its collegiate atmosphere.

Please note that the steps in this building are a bit steep.

To travel around the city, the 4 stations within 8 blocks will provide you with the A/B/C/D and 2/3 lines to move towards downtown Manhattan or north towards the Bronx.

Please note that the owner lives in this brownstone and their dog and cat have access to the common areas of the building such as the entry and the stairs. But rest assured, they are certainly not allowed on your floor.

Please also note that this is a non-smoking apt.

Great small apartment in a quiet street of Harlem. Subway is within walking distance and takes you to Times Square for instance in only 10 minutes with express line. Comfortable bed, summary but adequate kitchen, clean and comfortable bathroom, towels available, etc. Apartment is on the 2nd floor of a townhouse, staircase is to be shared with the nice and discreet landlady. A small private garden to be shared with the other occupants is located in front of the house (it must be the perfect place to eat or rest a bit during summer).

The landlady is charming, friendly and welcoming. The apartment is delightful as it is located in a brownstone. However, we could not get tepid water from the shower head, the blind above the bed was broken so sunlight came in directly on our head in the morning, we could not ventilate the bedroom, and air conditioning and fridge made a hell of a noise...

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
Oct 18 2016

Dear Friends--

We are certainly glad to hear from you. It seems the blinds got pulled up too raucously ( they'd been down before) . Consequently they stuck and we had to unstick them. Unfortunately, we've found many guests do not know how to manage Venetian blinds--they pull too hard and break the cords As you can imagine, this has become quite an expense over and again.

So we have ordered automatic blinds and shutters for the windows, although a colleague in the business tells me that guests have broken her shutters and automated blinds as well!

As for bedroom ventilation, the A/C is in the bedroom. There is also a fan which might have been used. I know because the A/C is in the bedroom window that does not open-- but if one does not want to run the AC at night you can run it during the day or for a few hours before bedtime and the room will be very cool and then use the fan if necessary.

As for the refrigerator and A/C noise --we always ask guests to let us know if anything is amiss; we do have suggestions that could be helpful, even though we cannot change those items. It does work to shut them down while sleeping, or turn to a lower setting.

I do wish you had mentioned the tepid shower! We have definitely not experienced that before so that is something we really should know about and could rectify!

Thank you again.

Peace & Blessings--

Cynthia

Strong points: the host is kind and available, good price compared to location.

To be improved: obsolete equipment (for instance: broken toaster, missing crockery, stove does not work well (heating is really not very powerful), very noisy fridge). The air conditioning unit should be moved in the "living room" because it is impossible to sleep with this (noisy) machine a few centimeters from the headboard. Living room is not comfortable enough; wicker chairs could be replaced by club chair = it would be much more comfortable! No television.

Hello thank you for your review.
You obviously have not checked around too much or you will find that the price for the studio is not only great for the location but for the accommodation itself and all it includes. I just checked the toaster and I found that it does work. Why it did not work for you is a mystery to me--unless you did not slid the switch (for light to dark toast). As for the stove we have since had a guest who in fact did a lot of cooking with no complaints and the stove did get hot enough. I realize the refrigerator is noisy when it pops on. That I suppose is the hazard of staying in a studio apartment with a large refrigerator. The air conditioner is what it is but when we had it in the living room there were comments that the bedroom did not get cool enough. Most people turn the AC on for a few hours before bed and then turn it off or on low for sleeping. As for the wicker chairs I personally find them comfortable but I imagine it is all a matter of personal taste. We do not have TVs in the apartments and have no intention of getting them. Most of our guests watch almost anything they want on their iPhones, android,or iPads. I think you will find that this accommodation while not quite the Plaza is exquisitely clean & really very well equipped. My sincere apologies for the toaster. Had you told me I would have immediately replaced it. Fortunately for us a former guest likes this apartment so much that she has rented it for a long term beginning November 1st.
Peace & Blessings

We were so glad we could accommodate you! The bed is a standard full size bed, which I am sure is explained in the apt. description. Indeed, the apt is dated! This building was constructed in 1886--but the appliances and accouterments are all relatively new; while we seek to replicate the house historically, we maintain updated appliances.
Thank you again!

Strong points:
- authentic neighborhood
- kind landlady (she offered us some muffins when we arrived)
- close to 1, 2 and 5 subway lines
- spacious accommodation

To be improved:
- Fridge was really loud (we switched it off to sleep at night)
- Gutter just in front of the bedroom was leaking loudly
- Cat's pee smell in the house
- General cleanliness
- Not much space around the bed

We loved having you! I'm sorry about the things that bothered you!!!

1. Yes, the refrigerator is not that far from your sleeping area, so it's a kind of loud sound in the otherwise quiet of night. Most folks used to city-dwelling aren't bothered--but I understand. Not sure what to do about it though!!;-(
2 We had some heavy downpours of rain, and while I'm quite sure the gutter was not leaking--I certainly hope it wasn't (it's less than a year old!!) the rushing of water can make quite a noise--in addition to the rain pelting the sky-lights which are quite close in proximity to the studio. I will check to make sure the gutter has no leaks--though I think we would have seen evidence of that.
3.We clean the kitty litter every day; I know sometimes there are musty odors in this old house especially when it's very humid. But I assure you we keep everything clean and we definitely look after the cat's litter box.
4 You're right, the bed doesn't have much space around it We could only really fix that by taking out a wall. But it's much more room than some others I know of which actually make two individual rentals (same price as ours or more) out of even less space!! This is New York!

Thank you again!

Peace and blessings

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
Nov 30 2015

Lukas, You were a very quiet, sweet-mannered and respectful guest. As for the shower curtain-I really can't see anything wrong with it. The shower curtain, while perhaps slightly feminine;-) is in perfect shape, and our cleaning person routinely cleans it with bleach. We change the shower curtains and liners frequently as it is.
As for the shower itself I will certainly check it but the shower head is meant to release from the catchment as it's on a hose for a spa-spray effect.
Cooking pots: maybe you didn't check the cupboard because they are there. There's a frying pan, a large sauce pan, a cooking pot and a baking pan. I will add some extras, though, just in case. I am sorry you were disturbed by the noise coming from the fridge. That's the thing about studio apartments--the kitchen isn't far from the bedroom!! But you have to agree it is an excellent, nice big fridge!;-).
I don't know if you realize this is an historic building, built in 1886, with great original detail, but it is very clean and well-kept up, centrally located and quiet.
Thank you.

The apartment was on the third floor of an old building, very eccentric ... it had a small kitchenette with 2 hot plates and a microwave, a fairly large bathroom with a tub and a skylight :-), a bedroom with a bed and then a kind of small drawing room with a wardrobe and a dresser. In my opinion, it was a little old although it proved to be more than sufficient. It only was a little uncomfortable to be on the third floor but everything was very clean. There is air conditioning and high-speed wifi, however there is no TV.The neighborhood was very good even if it was in Harlem, there was a police station 1 block away and a very easy access to downtown Manhattan by subway, there were also buses and two supermarkets nearby .... so in my opinion we had everything we needed, and I think it was a good value-for-money. Cynthia is also very friendly and attentive, always making sure you have everything you need

Sep 18 2015

Hello Luisa
I'm glad you were comfortable during your stay here in NYC. You are correct, this is a very old (historical) building, built around 1886. I hope the stairwell didn't bother you! This brownstone is like many others in Harlem--with lots of original detail, but it has all been upgraded of course, even though it definitely appears "antique." We love the Victorian charm of these homes, though some of them fell into total disrepair and had to be "gutted" when renovated. Those have only the façade from the 19th century.
As for the kitchen in the apartment in which you stayed, the "stove is actually called an Avanti "Mini-Kitchen" and has a double cooktop above the oven (not a microwave).
I hope you enjoyed your stay! You were lovely guests!
Peace & Blessings!

The fridge of the kitchen (which is an extension of the bedroom) was extremely noisy. I told the landlady about it on the day before our departure as I did not see her before: her answer was "yes, I know". Otherwise, the apartment and the area were quiet.
Both windows were dirty and taped up. We did not try to open them. The overall apartment was kind of worn out (the pipe under the sink was kind of moldy and rusty, the walls were not very clean, as were the windows?).
It often smelled bad in the stairwell (an undefinable smell). We were renting the top floor apartment and were sometimes forced to hold our nose.
We like pets, fortunately because, unless I am mistaken, the cat and the dog (which we hardly saw) were not mentionned in the description. Some people are allergic. As for us, we were not bothered, it was quite the opposite.
Some items of the crockery were not in a good shape.
The positive point: the landlady spared us the deposit (whereas we did not asked her about it) and agreed by email to let us pay in euros (so that we did not have to change our money).
The doors did not lock properly. It seems like all the locks of the house and the bedroom (very basic locks) have been forced or were badly installed. These were only symbolic locks, which was not reassuring.
Blackout curtains were not very efficient (it was actually net curtains).
Consequently, we woke up very early. Especially as the bed is directly in front of/under the window.
The apartment pictures show an elegant interior. We thought it has just been renovated. When we arrived, the apartment looked dull and faded.
We were waiting for your questionnaire to tell you about all this. We were about to send you our feedback if you did not send it to us.
In short, it was very average. An update visit would be useful.

Jul 25 2015

Thank you Laurie for choosing my apartment.

If you told me the fridge was noisy I did not understand. I always tell people I am very sorry if something does not suit them and try to make a change. I would have suggested you turn the fridge off during the night (it is large & will stay very cold), but as I said, if you commented on the refrigerator I simply didn't understand!! As the pictures show, this is a very traditional Harlem Brownstone studio apartment. The kitchen is a small room off the sleeping room--not an "extension of...," though it has an archway, not a door.

Regarding the windows, the cleaning person had just cleaned them and the walls are not dirty. The windows have duct tape around the air-conditioner--as most homes without central air do, to keep the cool air in and the warm air out. The wood around one of the window frames is old and at some point it would be good to replace the sill in part. But the windows themselves are fine; the bedroom window is new. Of course it isn't a good idea to open the window with the A/C in it, but the other is operable! Nothing in my apt is moldy, we make very sure of that. It is possible you thought the sealant under sink pipe is mold, but it is neither dirty nor moldy.

While it is true that we have pets in the building, they are thoroughly house-trained and I'm quite certain the apartment info does refer to the fact we have a dog and a cat, neither of which gets anywhere near the apartments. As for the dishes and pots and pans, the are in very good shape! There is nothing wrong with any lock--and the locks are secure deadbolts! In fact, while most of the locks in the building (front door, etc.) are period replicas, they have been installed fairly recently.

The bed is in front of the window; there are blinds which if worked properly, prevent early AM light (the sun is on the other side of the house in the morning, not the back/South side where this apt is. There are rayon curtains not net in front of the blinds.

I wish you had mentioned these points to me during your stay. I always ask my guests to contact me by ringing the doorbell if anything at all bothers them. We welcome a visit, but, to me, the pictures are true, a very clean, pretty, neat, well-equipped, and practical unit for an unbelievable price.

Compared to the NYC market, this apartment has a very good value for money. The subway station is a 5 minute walk and it takes you to Downtown Manhattan in 10 minutes with the express train. The very nice and helpful landlady gave us a piece of paper on which she indicated the directions (with the exact streets) to reach some areas. The apartment is simply decorated but functional. Anyway, you don't come to New York City to stay home. Harlem is very safe. We took the subway after 11 pm and never had any issues. Maybe some noise at night because of the ambulance sirens, but anyhow, the closer you get to Downtown Manhattan, the louder it gets. The landlady is very accomodating as she kept our luggage in her apartment until we left for the airport, she even called a taxi which arrived 5 minutes later. Only positive comments for this apartment and its location.

Dear Cedric-- Thank you for your feedback. .I am disappointed you found the apartment not up to your standards. We do take great pride in keeping our building and the apartments in top shape. And, honestly, I have a hard time believing the "kitchen cabinets" were "greasy;"
If you found a spot of grease somewhere I would love to have had you point that out to me because that certainly is not acceptable.. And if my cleaning person missed a dust bunny somewhere, I would like to know that too!! Our cleaning person is a very conscientious young woman who takes great pride in her work. I will certainly remind her to thoroughly clean the cabinets inside and out, and to check everywhere for "dust bunnies."

The fellow, whom you may have seen on Saturday, is supposed to remove the garbage, clean the bathroom, and put away the laundry. And, of course, if anything is obviously soiled, he will take care of that.

I'm sorry you feel you need to be dismissive of our historic landmark brownstone. Perhaps you are not aware that brownstones such as ours, which are fortunate to have most original detail--unlike the "gutted" renovated buildings which have no historic charm--all have a central staircase leading to, yes, individual studio apartments. But the apartments are on a separate (4th) floor, and are entirely private.
Kind regards--

Clement, I'm sorry you had an issue with cleaning. When guests arrive not only do we provide them with a document on which they are told to please notify us with any concern, but I also stress that to them, orally, upon their arrival.

We have a weekly cleaning service on Saturday when bed changes are made and the bathrooms and bedrooms/kitchens are supposed to be thoroughly cleaned. I will certainly remind my Saturday cleaning staff of their duties!

I have no doubt whatsoever that the apartment was spotless upon your arrival. We do not provide daily cleaning, but all the cleaning equipment is there for the guests' use if they wish to clean up after themselves. It is expected that the guest will do at least minimal cleaning such as daily kitchen and bath clean-up.

I hope you enjoyed your stay; we really do try very hard to accommodate our guests in any way we can.

The owner of the apartment was always very nice and helpful. We could always ask questions about the apartment and the surrounded area. She even prepared a flyer about the things to do in her neighborhood and in order to introduce herself.

At first we thought we would have a separate entrance which turned out was not the case. However it was not bad at all because even though the owner lived on the second floor and our apartment was on the third floor, we did not intrude their privacy.

We had an AC which was nice because when we arrived it was a hot day. The furniture was in good condition. We had a fridge, a cooking area, a toaster and a coffee maker in the kitchen. The owner provided us with clean towels and clean sheets.

We could always ask for more towels if needed them since we stayed for a longer period of time. The bed was comfortable.

Overall, the apartment was quite clean. We really enjoyed our stay there and would always recommend friends who would like to visit the area to stay in this apartment.

Nicole, we enjoyed you very much. I am sure the Central entrance comes as a small surprise to folks who are not familiar with Harlem's historic brownstones.

Our building has most of the original detail, which includes one main entrance and a central staircase, leading to the apartments which nonetheless are self-contained each with their own private 3rd (or 4th from street level) floor entrance.

The accommodation is exactly as shown on the photos. We stayed there for one week and the accommodation met all our needs, it was very convenient to have a kitchen for the evening meal after a busy day sightseeing around NYC, and without having to go out for dinner (which you often have to do if you're staying at a hotel).

The service provided is complete and the apartment is fully equipped, and nothing was lacking. The only thing is you have to take your shoes off before you get in but you get used to it and after a day walking it is a relief to be barefoot.

The hosts are very kind and helpful for anything you need, but at the same time they're not intrusive and most of the time it's like being at home. The neighborhood is quiet and you can get about without any problem, there are two subway stations very close by (116th and 125th) and from there you can go anywhere in NYC.

Accommodation definitely to be recommended for a stay in NYC... it was a wonderful experience and I can't wait to go back!!! ENJOY NYC!!!!!

The hostess is charming and very discreet. Waited for us although we arrived later than planned. Welcome muffins in the fridge. This vacation rental has everything you need to have a pleasant stay. To go back to some of the comments, yes, the fridge is noisy, as are all fridges - except that when you're home, you don't sleep next to it, so obviously you hear it more here.

The wooden staircase creaks a little. But that's what makes the charm of this genuine dwelling. You really feel home here. The only downside, but it's only because we have to find one: it would be to have 2 beer- and 2 wine glasses instead of just one of each. But that really doesn't matter.

The neighborhood is great!! Lively but quiet. 15 min away from times square with the subway. Walking along 125th has you swing over into another dimension. America as you imagine it.

I'll definitely be very happy to go back to this vacation rental. Thanks again.

We stayed in the apartment for 10 days and loved everything about it! It is nicely located within walking distance from the A/B/C/D subway station which allows traveling downtown in a couple of minutes (taking A or D). However, we also enjoyed the direct neighborhood with a couple of famous jazz clubs and nice restaurants.

For Germans: the "bier international" is also very close, 2099 Frederick Douglass Blvd. They offer a range of german beer in case you miss it (including Hofbräu, Kölsch, Jever...). We also suggest renting bikes at MODsquad, 2119 Frederick Douglass Blvd, and to take the bike road to downtown Manhattan along the Hudson river. For shopping lovers: the GAP outlet store is on 125th street right across the corner.

We felt very welcome by the owners, especially Cynthia, and wish to express our sincere gratitude for making the stay a great memory!

Good value for the money for this vacation rental. small but nicely laid out and typical with exposed stones in the bedroom.

Friendly and helpful hosts but strict rules to live by (taking shoes off, making sure the barriers are well in place for the pets, making sure everything is in the fridge...) when you're on vacation and renting home stay accommodation, it can give you the feeling you're not at home.

Still very satisfied despite that.

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
May 22 2013

Catherine you and your husband were lovely guests and we're sorry we do have a few rules and customs - Not as many as some guest houses, but "No Smoking," "No shoes indoors," and making sure foods are refrigerated, as well as general respectfulness are among them. We also ask that only toilet tissue be flushed down the toilet - common sense things, really. Keeping food in the fridge is simply necessary to avoid a cockroach situation. (We don't have them and we don't want them!;-). This is NYC after all and cockroaches would rule if they could! ;>).

As for removing shoes - all our guests, as well as we ourselves have to do it. It just keeps the floors more sanitary - it is our custom, and we ask that guests please respect that.

And, yes, the barriers must be kept in place
a) to keep the pets from running upstairs and bothering guests, and
b) to keep our recently adopted "rescued" Beagle from running out the door! He's a crazy, silly, over-eager little guy, and it would break our hearts to lose him!

So we're sorry but, alas, the rules are here to stay, I'm afraid! They're mostly all for our guests' sake, and for those guests who follow!

But we loved having you and your husband, and we were pleased to oblige your friends, as well, who needed to store luggage for several hours. You were also very smart to leave the keys in the mailbox when you left (because you didn't see us around).

I enjoyed my stay, so take the following in that context:

Internet: terrible in the rear room. Owner solved the problem by last day of my stay.

Great location, I used the subways a lot.

For me, none of the chairs were comfortable for lounging/reading. I'm a very microwave-oriented person, so that was a missing ingredient for me.

Building is old and attractive, except steep front steps are dangerous: we had sleet and I slid all the way down the steps to the sidewalk. Serious pain & bruises, fortunately no broken bones. I'd suggest traction strops on those steps.

Noise: the stairs are really loud, made me reluctant to go out late for fear of disturbing people. The owner's new dog was occasionally loud, annoying in middle of night (only once or twice).

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
Feb 11 2013

We enjoyed having Ryan--and we felt terrible about the internet and his slip on the steps! Once before, someone had mentioned the internet was sluggish in the rear, but Ryan wanted to do a lot of work as he was here for a conference, I believe--and it wasn't working well enough for him.

Our server is Verizon, and after lengthy phone calls, phone waits, and working with at least four different technicians by phone, for hours, we were able to properly install an internet extender--so the problem, happily, is solved.

Unfortunately, it took until the last day Ryan was here! But we are very glad he pointed out this problem to us or we would not have known! That said, the internet was always strong in the common area downstairs, where he was able to work successfully.

As for the chairs, two are the same kind we use in our personal sitting area--and they work for us, but Ryan is tall, so maybe that had something to do with his discomfort.

The steps--all of the brownstones have similar outdoor steps. When my husband left for work around 5:30 pm it was raining and there was no ice, but it seemed to have turned suddenly colder and more slippery. Our other guests said they hadn't noticed--but perhaps they had boots with more sole traction. We were devastated that Ryan slipped--and immediately put de-icer on the steps.

We're really so very sorry about that, and will seek to solve the problem so it never happens again!

We have a new little Beagle hound, a rescue dog, who is sweet as can be--but is still in training, and sometimes howls for no reason! He's learning--and getting over his nervousness! He actually loved Ryan--seemed to think he was a long lost friend!

As for the stairs--this is a landmark 100 + year old Harlem brownstone. The steps are solid and we've had them "tightened", but creaking comes and goes with greater and lesser humidity as the stairs expand and contract. There isn't really anything we can do about that--but no one should fear that it bothers us--because it doesn't! It probably sounds much louder to the person walking on the stairs than it sounds to anyone else.

All in all, Ryan was a lovely, gracious guest--and if he returns we'll definitely try to make him as comfortable as we possibly can--as we do and shall with all our guests! We appreciate the constructive suggestions!

Charming and very welcoming hosts. but the accommodation isn't very clean, the fridge makes one hell of a noise... there are no bedside lamps which prevents you from reading in bed. I won't recommend this vacation rental to friends despite its good location and the lady's kindness.

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
Jan 30 2013

Thanks for your review, Alain. The place is sparkling--we thoroughly clean, vacuum, dust, scrub before for you. If something has been missed we would have been so very appreciative if you had let us know!

The $100+ 600 thread-count sheets are fresh, luxurious, wrinkle-free, laundered in 7th Generation toxin-free & hypoallergenic detergent. If you mentioned anything to me, I would immediately have had the cleaning service come in to service the apartment.

As for bedside lamps--if you had checked the pictures when booking the apartment, you would have seen that there are no bedside lamps. There is an easily moved desk lamp however, which you could have used if you wanted to read in bed.

The refrigerator makes some noise as most refrigerators do. In a small, very quiet apartment, the motor when running is audible, since the kitchen is not that far from the bedroom.

That said, you stayed only 3 nights and did not want to pay the cleaning fee although the agent said he'd made them aware of it. Because you alleged that you didn't know you had to pay it, we of course let it go. Moreover, you stayed at bargain prices--far less than practically anywhere in NYC during the holiday season. That is not, at all, to say we give you less than excellent service/accommodations.

I'm so sorry you were unhappy. Our goal is always to please and to give the best service possible. We repeatedly, orally and in writing, ask you, our guests to let us know immediately if something is not satisfactory. We will do our best to keep up our excellent service.

We thought the apartment had a lot of character and was very handy for the express subway to downtown Manhattan. The owners were helpful and obliging. Some more crockery and cutlery would be nice and the wireless signal was a bit unreliable.

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
Oct 22 2012

Rachel and company were lovely and gracious guests. Unfortunately, there is little we can do with the wireless signal. It's usually very good but seems sometimes to depend upon the equipment accessing the wireless. Only occasionally have guests had spotty access though and in the back studio. The signal is always strong elsewhere.

Nonetheless, we will certainly see if our service company can help. As for the cutlery and dishware -- we keep enough there, as well as pots and pans, for at least 4 people. But of course, if anyone needs more (should they be having a several course meal), we'd be only too glad to provide them with additional things.

I will certainly check to make sure nothing has gone missing!

There was a small discrepancy with NY Habitat regarding the price of the rental (there was a mistake when we worked out the contract, eventually two different prices were established). We could resolved that directly with the owner, she was very friendly and accommodating.

Welcoming owners. Apartment in a poor cleanliness condition. Tub was clogged so all the dirt would back up, sofa was dirty and stained better not to sit on it to be able to get up again. Both apartment windows don't open so we suffocated and no way to air (and believe me it was necessary because of mold smell).

The neighborhood is lively during the day but we'd better no linger in the evening. It is a shame to rent an apartment in these conditions!!!

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
Apr 12 2012

I am so very sorry these guests had such a negative experience in the apartment. This is highly unusual.

1)The apartment was cleaned, professionally, immmediately prior to the guests' arrival. We will do everything we possibly can to inspect the unit and make sure no one has anything but a wonderful apartment experience henceforth!

2) Unfortunately, the cleaning service did not note that the bath was running slowly. We found out only after these guests left, and immediately remedied the problem. We saw no dirt or dirty water--but we fixed the sluggish drain, and will make certain it remains clear. Our most sincere apologies!

3)We have replaced the sofa because it was frequently being misused; now there are chairs for relaxing, and more luggage space.

4) The guests asked if they could open the window and we offered to show them how to open it. They said that was not necessary. I'm terribly sorry they were too warm. From now on we will insist that we help them, to assure the guests' comfort.

5) We do a weekly anti-mold treatment and have our house routinely inspected for molds. There is no mold.

6) Harlem is as safe an area as any in New York City; there are wonderful jazz & blues spots (Showman's, The Lenox Lounge, Paris Blues) only steps away,as well as many great restaurants. We have a new brochure informing guests of the cultural mecca they will find here, and we will do all we can to make their stay in Central Harlem amazing!

+ Nice stay in this apartment. Very friendly owner. Very well equipped (kitchen even had coffee, sugar, spices, dish soap etc. there was already everything). Muffins for our arrival. All great.

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
Mar 26 2012

We have recently begun switching to incredible 600 thread count, 100% Egyptian cotton, wrinkle-free sheets, because we'd like our guests to experience a wonderful, luxurious sleep! However, our current sheets are all 350 to 450 thread count, and they are always washed in hypoallergenic, organic, toxin free "7th Generation" laundry detergent. Guests are told in writing that they are welcome to fresh bed linens as often as they wish.

These guests were perfectly lovely, a joy! They had brought their one-year old baby with them, and so as a precaution we had wrapped the mattress with a new plastic covering underneath the sheet. Perhaps the plastic covering had a peculiar odor which we did not detect. We are so sorry if that was the case--but we assure them, and everyone, that all linens are always freshly laundered! If we spot a stain we immediately remove the sheet from the linen closet!

We were a little apprehensive about staying in Harlem, but at 1/3 the price of standard Manhattan hotels, we decided to give it a try. We ended up on a nice street, staying in a beautifully restored brownstone's little studio apartment on the third floor. It was clean, charming, and surprisingly quiet.

The subway station is a couple of blocks away, and you have everything you need in close proximity. We always felt safe walking to and from the apartment, regardless of the time (6am, midnight, 3am), and the neighborhood has a lot of character. Welcome: Very kind owner who welcomed us with homemade muffins. Brilliant!

Location: We were a little concerned about the apartment's location, but we don't regret our choice at all! This apartment is ideal for a good compromise between value for money (much cheaper than south of Central Park) and location (very well served by 6 subway lines, including 3 express lines (A, D and 2) which take us to the heart of Manhattan in just 20 minutes !!!!). We'd also like to reassure all potential future tenants: Harlem isn't dangerous at all! We were never afraid, even when we came home after midnight.

Cleanliness: only average, because of a few hairs in the bathroom.

Condition and comfort: everything we needed was there (even an English-French dictionary, which we took with us during the day). Nothing to say.

Building: very good. Nice little typical Harlem house.

Quiet/noise: no noise (apart from the little birds in the morning: very pleasant) as the apartment is located on the courtyard side.

Other: we missed having shutters or blackout curtains to prevent the light from entering the apartment early in the morning. For those who are bothered by light: keep your night masks, courtesy of the airlines ;-)

Overall, we highly recommend this apartment.

Using this site New York Habitat, was an amazing experience. I am really glad I went through this site. It was sooo much cheaper than any other alternative of staying in a hotel or motel, and had a homier feel, than just a generic hotel room where they all look the same. The site was super easy to use, the representatives on the other side of the phone were outrageously helpful with answering any questions whether it be about the room or even where it was you were planning on traveling too. (Shout out thank you to Herve Frenoy!)

The customer service with this site was top notch, couldn't have asked for better. With reserving the room, it was very easy, and easy to understand what the payments were for and what everything cost.

The room itself that I and a friend booked was on the edge of Harlem in NYC. The room was exactly as described in the pictures. No complaints. It was an old building, an old room, but it was nice, and worthy of the amazingly cheap price we paid to stay there for 10 nights.

The property owners were very welcoming, treated us like family, very nice people. Easy to get a hold of if we needed anything or had any questions and tending to any issues should any occur.

I am very happy with going through this New York Habitat site, as well am outrageously happy with the room we had rented out. I would definitely recommend this site to anyone wanting to visit NYC for a cheaper, not-so-far-from-home-feeling room to rent. The site and apartment exceeded my expectations by far. Thank you New York Habitat for all of your help as well as the owner for the amazing room and stay. THANK YOU!
