1 Bedroom Vacation Rental in Harlem (NY-15029)
1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom - Sleeps 5

This fully furnished one bedroom apartment is located in Uptown Manhattan in Harlem, New York. The apartment is on the 2nd floor (considered 1st by Europeans) of a 4-story walk-up building. It is perfectly suited for budget travelers who need a convenient place to stay.

This vacation rental features hardwood floors complemented by contemporary furnishings and two decorative fireplaces. In the living room, there are chairs and sofa facing a television, a trundle bed (a single bed with another single bed under it that can be rolled out) as well as a dining table. Additionally there is a small alcove with a single size daybed for extra sleeping accommodation. Please note that the living room faces 5th Avenue, a busy street (home to the New York Marathon in November), and therefore guests may experience some noise. The kitchen is separate and equipped with a fridge, microwave and coffee maker.

Please note: This building is located at a busy 5th Avenue intersection. As such, street noise may be heard throughout the day and night. During the month of November, the NYC Marathon passes right in front of the building.

Harlem is a bustling Manhattan neighborhood bountiful with famous attractions, historic architecture, and serene parks:

  • Strivers Row: Visit this block of spectacular 19th century neo-Italian and Georgian homes. Be sure to walk to 251 and 253 West 138th Street, where one gatepost reads “Private Road. Walk Your Horses.” Accessible via train.
  • Studio Museum in Harlem: Check out this museum decorated with contemporary art by African, Caribbean, and African-American artists. Located at 144 W. 125th Street. Accessible via foot.
  • Morris-Jumel Mansion: This historic home was once used as a headquarters by General Washington during the Revolutionary War. Located at 65 Jumel Terrace. Accessible via train or bus.
  • Apollo Theater: This functioning theater still offers “amateur night”, an event that has catapulted many African-American legends to fame including Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Ross, and many more. Located at 253 W 125th Street. Accessible via foot.
  • Marcus Garvey Park: This gorgeous park offers space to relax and soak in the sun’s rays by the swimming pool. Located at 18 Mt Morris Park West. Accessible via foot.

For public transportation around Manhattan or into other boroughs of New York City, walk to 125th Street / Lenox Avenue for the 2 or 3 trains (0.2mi/350m). Additionally, you may walk to 125th Street / Lexington Avenue for the 4, 5, and 6 trains (0.3mi/550m).

The apartment is very nice, bright and spacious. Well located for public transportation, the bus is right outside the building and there are several subway lines a 5-minute walk away.
The neighborhood has character, the park right next door is a pleasant lively community place.
Several supermarkets and laundry close by.
The owner is friendly and lives on the ground floor.

Tristan, thank you for taking the time to write this review and letting the people know you enjoyed your stay and accomodations. Also, letting them know how convenient the neighborhood is and accessible to other parts of the city. I do hope you and your family enjoy the rest of your journey across this land.

Accommodation as advertised, really outdated furniture and decoration, comfortable beds, adequate supply of quality household linen, the bedroom on the courtyard side is very quiet but the beds on the side of 5th Avenue a bit noisy, well located apartment a 5-minute walk from the subway, ideal location to visit, several stores close to the apartment.
The owner is really very friendly and gives good advice.
I recommend without any hesitation, excellent value for money

The apartment is conveniently located to visit New York as in front of the house there is the M1 bus stop that runs entirely along Fifth Avenue to downtown and 250 mt away are the 1,2,3,4 and 5 subway stops... Everything is nearby and it is 500 meters from the Apollo Theater.
The house is comfortable, large ( 4 of us stayed there comfortably) and furnished with everything you need maybe a vacuum cleaner would be helpful...)
Kevin is a wonderful host always helpful and very kind.
The only thing you have to be prepared for is that the house is in the heart of Harlem so when you go out you find neighborhood residents and not tourists even if you are a 15 minute walk from Central Park or a 15 minute subway ride from Times Square. As Kevin says though, only those who cause problems find them: live and let live.
I will definitely recommend it to friends who want to visit the Big Apple.
Have a great trip everyone

Very good location in a lively and genuine neighborhood (some homeless people will approach you but not in a pushy way), a stone's throw from a park and bus and subway stations. The whole foods 5 minutes away is a real plus.
Two large rooms, good quality bedding and a lovely owner always ready to help out.
A little suggestion: provide a toaster.

Accommodation is ok for people with an unsophisticated way of life who are not afraid of being immersed in Harlem local life! Quite good location, subway nearby, bus outside the building and several stores close by as well (shopping - organic food - fast food restaurants and food trucks). Local life is rich in cultural diversity if you are open to others! From one block to another we go from "pauperized" areas with homeless people (++) to more "trendy" neighborhoods. For walkers, Central Park is about a 20-minute walk. The apartment is clean, quite decent for the price, Wi-Fi works well, the kitchen has everything you need to cook simple dishes when you don't want to go out for dinner. Kevin, the owner, is gracious, kind and welcoming. Air conditioning is hyper efficient but noisy (we only put it on while we were awake and switched it off before going to sleep), we just left the ceiling fan on for the night. The foldable eating tables are a bit wobbly but do the job. The little front yard could do with a more frequent sweep up. This apartment rental is still quite decent, even with children.

The apartment location is quite good. Two subway lines + bus right outside the building.
It has very good bedding and is more than adequately equipped.
It is an old apartment that could do with a little refreshing.

The only slight downside was the cleanliness as it wasn't spotless but it wasn't terrible either.
We had a great stay.

Thanks for your review Christine.
It took a little while to respond because I wanted to update a few things before I responded. I have now added new chairs, new linen and a new dresser. I have also done a deep cleaning and touch up painting. However, It is very hard to avoid the scratches on the wall. The coming and going of guest and there luggage always tend to leave a scratch but I always try and keep it to a minimum. However, I am very glad you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again.

Spacious and stylish apartment with modern kitchen and bathroom. Friendly welcome and ideal location in Harlem. However, some maintenance is necessary (soundproofing, bathroom door not closing, old locks...).

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
Feb 12 2020

Thomas thanks for the review. I don't know what you mean by soundproofing. If other guest were a little noisy I apologize and wish you had told me. Although the locks are old they still function and in forty years I have never had a problem. You are well secured here at all times. Also the bathroom door closes. All in all I trust you had a wonderful stay in New York and my place

The strong points are the proximity of the means of transport, the kindness and the availability of the owner who lives there, the large volumes of the apartment, the parquet floor, the clearness.
The drawback is Harlem in the evening.
So mostly strong points.

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
Jan 21 2020

Odile thank you for the review. I am happy you found your accommodation suitable
Everyone is different because some people come and enjoy the music and dinner and no problem. Harlem like all of New York in the day and night, walking the streets or riding the subway you must watch yourself. However, in the last five years no one that has stayed in my place has had any problems in Harlem or elsewhere.

The apartment and the building are very characteristic. Everything was clean and in good condition. The towels and sheets were more than enough for us. The landlord is very helpful and kind and helped us reserve the trip to the airport. He allowed us to check-in early; besides, since we had to return the rental car right away, he waited for us to complete the payment the next day and told us not to worry about it.
The subway is close enough, but the neighborhood at night did not seem to be very safe. Nobody ever bothered us, but there are many homeless people and drunkards hanging around.
Overall, it's been a very good experience.

Gary's our thank you for your review and I am pleased you like the service. Homelessness is a problem in Harlem as well all over New York and elsewhere. The only thing to improve would be the lock of the apartment. Hopefully we did not have a break-in but the state of the lock was very average.

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
Dec 05 2019

Devy, thanks for your review. First I am glad overall you had a pleasant stay here. The lock may not be the best in the world but it has done its job and has never been a problem. The main locks on the outside of the building are the main locks for security. If the guest lock the outside door, there is no issue of safety here. No one is in the building but my family and guest like yourself. In forty years there has never been a break in in this building, since I have been here.

Located right in front of the bus line 1 and 5 minutes away from subway lines 2 and 3. Very appreciated in New York City.
The apartment is located on a very busy road of Harlem and New York is a noisy city, so it's loud but we still managed to sleep well. Another good point is that a Whole food supermarket is 5 minutes away from there. The landlord was nice. We had an excellent stay.

Kevin is very welcoming and has always been available whenever we needed. The flat is very close to the subway and to groceries, which is very convenient.

Our stay was nevertheless very nice, the flat is spacious.

Marcie, thanks for the review. Sorry for the noisy pond next door but it is very little I can do about it. If you use the Air Condition and or fan you can close the windows and shut the noise from the pond. The Street noise is just the activity from Fifth Avenue that can be shut out also by closing the window and using the air condition. My attempt to fix the refrigerator has been to no avail and I guess it is just time to replace it. Thanks for your time and your business

Dear Marcie,

It was a pleasure serving you. We really appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback and being so open with us.

We are sorry to hear your concern about the noise. As explained on the advertised apartment page, this building is located at a busy 5th Avenue intersection. As such, street noise may be heard throughout the day and night.

Our company puts client satisfaction as a top priority and we are committed to our clients. It is clients like you that make our job wonderful. We look forward to serving you again and making your next apartment booking experience more delightful with NEW YORK HABITAT.

Thank You!

The apartment lived up to our expectations, it was clean, had a comfortable bed, renovated shower, kitchenware and even some basic food such as oil or cereals for breakfast. It was conveniently located, close to 2 subway stations (less than 5 minutes away) with connection to Times Square in 10 minutes. The neighborhood seemed safe although we usually didn't arrive late. There are a couple of supermarkets nearby, one of them being quite big, as well as lots of places to have lunch and dinner. Everything went fine with the owner, there was a woman waiting for us when we arrived and they even kept our luggage on our departure day while we did a tour.

In regards to your comment about the cleanliness, I will be more conscientious about it in the future. This apartment is a great home base if you are looking for a place to stay in NYC.

Pros of this apartment:
1. Friendly and helpful owner / landlord - he was available to answer any questions we had about getting around, where to get food, etc.
2. Clean apartment,. It has high ceilings, big bright windows, all the kitchen amenities you will need.
3. Great location. Close to two subway lines makes it easy to get anywhere you want to go.
4. Great value for money - probably tough to beat in NYC.

Cons of this apartment:
1. It is on a busy street so you can hear the noise from the street facing living room. However, it is pretty reasonable and we got used to it after the first night.

Great apartment which I would recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay in NYC.

The owner's welcome and receptiveness were deeply appreciated. The apartment is ideally located in Harlem (with shops, subway and bus nearby). Traffic is heavy and the street is bustling but it is really reasonable.
The vacation rental is spacious for 4, very bright and pleasant. The owner provided us with the necessary household linen and the living areas are functional. Things to be improved: a more complete range of kitchen utensils (some of the cutlery and a chopping board are missing), more appropriate housekeeping tools (broom, more convenient mop, kitchen towel) and fixing the fridge which is too noisy!
Very good memories anyway and I will book this apartment again without a doubt if I ever come back to New York City.

May 17 2018

Patti, thank you for your time in letting me know about your stay. Sorry, for whatever noise you experienced in the front room, however, it is on Fifth Avenue, the middle of Manhattan. I say that not to say that is the way it is but to say "the city that never sleeps" is not quiet and at different times you will hear something from outside. I do feel you believe the convience of everything from this location (transportation, stores, night life etc) more then offset any discomfort from the noise by being on the main street. I am not sure what you mean by the TV could be upgraded, I have never received a complaint about it. The TV has about 100+ channels and all the premium movie channels.

Apartment is very comfortable and well-equipped. Toilets are fine, bedding is very qualitative in the master bedroom but a bit less in the children's bedroom. The owner welcomed us very nicely and was very accommodating. We were a bit disappointed by the neighborhood which was run down, and not always clean and safe. However, transportation is easily reachable.

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
May 12 2017

Pierre, thanks for taking the time to qwrite this review. I am glad you were overall pleased with the apartment. The children's beds are chosen for maximum comfort for two without taking up to much room. Often there are only two -3 individuals and the "childrens bed" double as a sofa or lounge for people in the front room. Generally, people have been ok with the bedding.

The neighborhood has been going through a revitalization for quite sometime and I will say it is far from "run down", although like the rest of NY you must watch yourself no one staying here in the last 5 years has had any problem in this neighborhood. I have talked to them about problems in other parts of the city but it has never been a frequesnt conversation. probably 2-3 times in five years. As for cleanliness of the neighborhood there is construction everywhere and the main street is busy everyday but is constantly being swept by myself, neighbors and merchants like everywhere else.

Transportation: I think this neighborhood has the best transportation then anywhere. 8 subway lines, 6 buses, bus to Laguardia airport, can easily take the subway to JFK and Newark airport, Metro North Railroad station to Upstate New YOrk and Conneticut.

We spent a very pleasant week in New York. The apartment is spacious, very bright, light and clean. It is located right by a subway station which serves many interesting areas. There is a well-stocked supermarket next to the apartment. The owners of the apartment, who live downstairs, are very kind, helpful and gave us a lot of valuable information to ease our stay. In short, I would gladly recommend this vacation rental to my friends willing to visit the city.

Sylvie, thanks for taking the time to write this review and I thank you for recommending the space to future renters. I take that to mean that although you have some recommendations, the place is still more then suitable for a brief stay. The wear and tear from all the guest (often 5 at a time) require some updating of a few pieces of furniture and I will soon as i can find the right pieces to take the rigor of the various guests. Thanks for the review. There are actually 9 subway lines in walking distance, about 7 bus lines and one to Laguardia Airport, The Metro North Station to upstate New York and Conneticut. Essentially, from here you can almost take a direct route to wherever you want to go in New York area. Also, if you like to walk this is a good starting point to begin your day with a good walk or run

In spite of our concern for being our first visit to NYC and not staying in Midtown Mahnattan, we can say it was not complicated at all. There are good public means near the apartment: bus in front of the building and the subway not far from it.

We came back to the apartment at around 9 pm each day. We passed by a near supermarket to buy our dinner and we never felt unsafe.
The owner was very kind and helped us with everything we needed. We communicated via wifi.
The apartment is old but nicely decorated, NY style. It was clean and it had all we needed to cook.
It was an unforgettable experience for us and we look forward to it again.

Usually, since it is a private bathroom for those in that unit everyone should know that someone is in there when the door is closed and do not enter. Spacious and bright apartment. It could be kept in better conditions, but it is ok in comparison with the others apartments that we saw in NYC. We missed a comfortable sofa. Excellent heating. The noise level at night was acceptable, during the day it was pretty loud although it was not a problem for us. We think that the only problem was the location, the neighborhood does not feel safe, above all at night, but we did not have any incident. The owner was very attentive and was always ready to help us.

Alfredo, thanks for visiting my home. There is a sofa there that acts as a bed when there are more then just two. I often host up to 5 individuals in that apartment.
I regret that you did not necessarily feel safe, however, I am not surprise that you had no incident. For five years families with children of all ages and individuals have stayed in that unit and have not had any incident coming and going in the neighborhood. In fact, any incident guest have had have been downtown in the "tourist area". However, I am glad and hope that overall you had a wonderful visit.

Overall it was good. The main problems are 1) the neighborhood: from 6/6:30pm it's scary for a woman to walk alone. Some places are not really safe at night 2) the long distance from downtown Manhattan.
That's why I would recommend to take a taxi if you go out or come back after 6pm.
Regarding the apartment: comfortable, a bit noisy at night but not in the room facing the inner courtyard. Upon our arrival, the owner gave us some explanations about the keys, the output bins etc... and told us where were the nearest subway stations. He was very friendly and very helpful. He also called a taxi to the airport for us

Oct 15 2015

Thank you for your review, Catherine. I am thrilled to see that you enjoyed your stay in the apartment. Like in other big cities, you should be cautious in New York, even though the neighborhood is generally safe. I understand that you feel safer taking taxis after 6 p.m., but many people who walk or take the subway still have a safe trip back home or wherever in New York.
5th Avenue is the center of New York City, which is a great location, but I am sorry that you found it far away from Downtown Manhattan. There is a subway station only a block away that will take you downtown in 15-20 minutes. Because of the central and lively location of the apartment, the living room can sometimes be noisy. I am glad to see that you enjoyed the tranquility of the bedroom.
It was a pleasure to host you, and I hope to see you again.

This apartment is a good choice to spend some days in New York. It is well located, next to subway stations in order to get to Downtown Manhattan. The owner is very decent and helpful. This simple apartment is quite spacious. Keep in mind that there is no window between both bedrooms. The courtyard bedroom is quiet, while the living room suffers more from the traffic noise, but it is okay. Many supermarkets in the vicinity. You can walk down 125th street freely, even at night.

Aug 11 2015

Thierry, I am glad you had a good stay overall. unfortunately, there is as indicated on the website no door to the bedroom. However, just to be clear the bed cannot be seen unless you walk into the room. whenever there is more then 2 that is together in a one bedroom there is always a little privacy issue but I am sure you worked it out because the unit is quite spacious. The apartment is located on Fifth Avenue the center of Manhattan and as is all of Manhattan there is always someone moving about.

We had a very nice stay in this vacation rental.

The owner was very welcoming and attentive, but unobtrusive. He informed us about the neighborhood's shops and told us how to easily buy our metrocard.

This old property with cachet is a typical Harlem brownstone. The apartment was clean, well heated, pleasant and very quiet.

This working class neighborhood is calm. Shops are a walking distance and also sell organic products. There are 2 subway stations serving the East and West sides of New York, which is very convenient to travel quickly around the city. We strongly recommend this ideally located, pleasant and quiet accommodation.

As the owner lives on the ground floor, the door is always locked and the house is more secured.

If we had the opportunity to come back to New York, we would rent this apartment again.

The bus in front of the house is few minutes from central park (14 short blocks) that most people walk. The subway, is one block away and can take you to Times Square, the center of the city. Distance is based on where you are going that day. With small children sometimes everything is far. The front of the building sits on Fifth Avenue and although the traffic does slow down at night it never comes to a halt. I do hope your stay was wonderful and the children had a good time.

Thank you for coming and I hope the weather was not to cold. The Locks on the door you are speaking about are several and cannot be opened but from the inside of the apartment. Safety starts with the guest locking the entry door to the building when they come and go.

There are four doors to the unit. The one used to enter the unit has a key. The other three doors are locked and can only be opened from inside the unit.

Christina, thank you for your comments. The unit is on Fifth Avenue and when the windows are open the lively city comes right in sometimes. No one has mentioned any problems with the windows before, so I will check.

However, the windows are rather new and tight for insulation. There are scuff marks from the many suitcases coming and going and a paint job is in line when things slow or in the off season. I so trust that it was only in spots and not over the entire place.

The building is well located with subways lines 1/2/3 less than a 5-minute walk away... nonstop to Midtown and Downtown with the express trains 2 and 3! + the bus in front of the building.

The neighborhood is very pleasant during the day, even if at night it might seem less "welcoming" when you go eastwards (East Harlem).

A small improvement would be to put a door to the corridor in order to divide the bedroom and the rest of the apartment, to get more privacy.

Answer by: Accommodation Owner

Thank you Anthony, I am glad you enjoyed your stay and found my space to meet your needs. Even if a door was put you will still have to walk through the bedroom to get to the bathroom.

Despite the noise, I am thrilled that you had an overall positive experience during your stay and it was my pleasure accommodating you.

We are two sets of couple friends and we spent 1 week in New York. The apartment is well equipped and large enough for 4! Its location is excellent: shops and restaurants closeby and public transport within easy reach. There is free wifi access, which is very convenient. It is a bit noisy on the main street side, but it's still very relaxing to come back to Harlem after a day in the crowd you get in the heart of Manhattan!

Special thanks to the host who lives on the ground floor and who is delightful! He gives really good advice and was of tremendous help for practical questions when our stay was disrupted by Superstorm Sandy. It is really nice to be welcomed this way! Thanks again!

I absolutely recommend this vacation rental!

I thank both couples for visiting my home. They were all a pleasure as we all went through our first hurricane, and hopefully our last. It wasn't the best of times but wonderful people make it easier in rough times, we all made it together.

Hopefully, you make another visit, soon. Again, thanks and great meeting all of you.

Apartment is very well located (subway stations very close by and a bus line in front of the building takes you to the heart of Manhattan), shops nearby for fresh supplies. Apartment is clean, comfortable, spacious (we were 2), somewhat noisy (at the corner of 5th avenue and 125th St: it's natural!!!!). Apartment is well equipped (a toaster would have been a plus).

Very helpful and obliging owner (he lives downstairs). The deposit can be paid in euros and is returned without any problem.

I recommend this place.

Thanks for the feedback, Catherine. While the apartment's centric location is great, it can indeed be noisy at times. We do mention in the property description that because the building is at an intersection on 5th Avenue, street noise may be heard throughout the day and night.

We're happy to hear that all of the advantages of staying in this rental outweigh the noise factor and that you enjoyed your stay overall!

Hope you return to NYC in the near future.

My family of 4 rented this appartment for a 2 week period during August and had a fantastic time.

The cost of staying in a 1 bedroom appartment in Harlem is considerably cheaper than staying in a shoe box size hotel room in midtown, it also made us feel like we were locals and not tourists.

The owner and his wife were extremely friendly and offered us lots of advice about upcoming events or the best attractions to see during our stay.

I would definately recommend considering this appartment for your NYC holiday.

I live in the premises, so it is easy to offer suggestions of where to go or alternative/scenic routes, how to get there for those guests that ask.

I loved my stay in NY, my habitat as part of my visit. The neighborhood is not the best but police officers were always near by. I came back to my home town very succesful.

Hello, everything went very smoothly for our stay in the apartment we booked.

The owner was very nice and helpful when we needed his help. The apartment met our expectations and there was no unpleasant surprise. The only thing we deplored was the lack of AC when the weather was hot.

We were happy and will not fail to contact you for a future stay. Warm regards, Eric

These guest were here I believe for a week or so. The weather during their stay was wonderful and when I informed them I was going to install air condition it was not a problem.

Then the weather changed the last 2 days and I could not get the guy here to install the air condition. Now there are two air conditions in the unit. With the air conditions installed and the guest do not have to open the windows unless they choose to this will probably help with the noise previous tenants spoke about. With the windows shut I don't believe the outside traffic is so noticeable.

For the last guest that was here , I wish there was some way I could make it up to them, I really enjoyed their company.

Accommodation is spacious enough and full of charm. The host is very welcoming and offers good tips. We were delighted to be in Harlem away from Manhattan bustle. The subway is close to the apartment and just about 15 minutes away from Times Square.

Right in Harlem, this apartment is really nice and pleasant to live in even if the furniture is not very new (this would be the only downside). It is very spacious, the subway is close by, you can easily go shopping and enjoy a walk in the adjacent park.

The owner is lovely and lives downstairs: he is very helpful. We had an excellent week in this apartment and we certainly hope to return!

I thank the guests for their comments. Regarding the statement that the furniture is old, I just don't understand what the guests were looking for. All my beds and mattresses are new, the tables in the rooms are in good shape the chairs I thought are adequate and can take heavy use, the dressers are not necessarily new but I believe they are more than adequate.

Apartment is as described, lively neighborhood, shops, restaurants and transport nearby. We spent 8 nights with 3 children, it's noisier on the street side, but the bedroom at the back is quieter, but after a tiring day you get to sleep anyway. Location is very good thanks to transport. The person in charge is cordial, very responsive and helpful.

The security deposit was paid in euros and returned without any worries.

Reception, availability and kindness of this great owner. Very well located vacation rental, spacious and well equipped. Could maybe use some finish for the details: locks and electricity, needs a microwave. Very good conditions for 11 days discovering New York. Apartment we've already recommended to our friends.

There are 2 entrance doors into the apartment, but only one of them is used and the second one is locked with a dresser in front of it. The bathroom also has 2 access doors, but again only one of them is used. The owner did not find any electrical issues in the apartment and has also added a new microwave to the kitchen.

The apartment is located in Harlem 1 block (barely 5 min) from express line 2 leading to Times Square in 13 min. The advantage is that you have none of the drawbacks you get downtown with regard to noise. Nights are very quiet and we felt the neighborhood was safe even when returning at night.

The owner is very nice and lives in the building (ground floor); he can always be reached on his cell (he kept our luggage the whole day of our departure day because our flight was at midnight). The apartment is located in an old building and was done up. It is large, well equipped, clean, the bedding is perfect, the kitchen well fitted out in terms of utensils and dishes (there is no microwave for the moment). There is a TV and a hi fi. The bathroom is very big with a very nice Italian shower (plenty of towels). We spent 4 nights in ideal conditions (2 adults, 1 child, 1 teenager).

We highly recommend this vacation rental. Little downside if you really need to find one: there is no door to the bedroom (a corridor works as a separation from the living room) and you have to walk through it to go to the bathroom so it is worth noting for those who appreciate intimacy...
