Neighborhood:

This apartment is near the open market, Marché d'Aligre, and not far from the historic Place de la Bastille where the Opera de Paris, considered one of the best in the world, is located. It was inaugurated for the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution. Within walking distance is the royal Place des Vosges, the city's oldest and most beautiful square, where many historic personalities have lived. Built by Henri IV, its perfect symmetry and verticality are fine examples of classic French architecture. There are many choices of restaurants, cafes, and other sorts of shops and essential services in the neighborhood.

Premises:

This loft apartment is located on the fifth floor (sixth in the USA) of an 18th century, well-maintained building that was a part of a monastery. The main entrance gate is protected by a coded security system and it opens into a corridor leading to the modern elevator.

The apartment has a parquet floor throughout as well as exposed ceiling beams.

Layout:

The entrance door opens into the living room and the open kitchen. On the right, a narrow hallway goes back to the bedroom area and the open bathroom. The separate toilet is accessible from the bathroom area.

The living room is decorated in an eclectic style and has a southern exposure. It has two double-glazed French windows closed by curtains that open onto a small terrace. This room is furnished with a double-size sofa bed, two coffee tables, two armchairs, a decorative fireplace, a wooden dining table with a wooden bench and chairs, bookshelves and a stereo system. The terrace overlooking the street has a small table and an exterior Brazilian shower.

The open kitchen is stylish in a contemporary way. It is equipped with a gas stove (six burners), an extractor fan, a refrigerator/freezer, a dishwasher, a combo washer/dryer, a coffee maker and a toaster. The kitchen area has a window that overlooks a courtyard with a northern exposure.

The bedroom area has two double-glaze windows with curtains overlooking the courtyard with an eastern exposure. The bedroom area is divided into two parts and separated by exposed beams. The first part is the open bathroom space, which is equipped with a tub and a washbasin. The second part is the bedroom space, furnished with a king-size bed, built-in shelves and a large closet closed by curtains. This room has cable TV, a DVD player, a VCR, a phone and an Internet connection (Wi-Fi).

The separate toilet also has a window.

The nearest metro station is Faidherbe - Chaligny (line 8).

Heat and hot water use gas and are individually metered.

The apartment is a beautiful retreat in a centrally located neighborhood in Paris -- a location off the tourist track where Parisians live. The furnishings are unique and the patio with flowers and a Brazilian shower make living there a special experience.

There are some things that could be improved: cable TV was not working, there was no working phone in the apartment, linens and dish towels were quite used. The building itself is poorly maintained, the entrance way was dirty and there was an unpleasant smell in the entrance hallway.

The apartment owner misplaced my deposit check and so could not return it to me. This caused inconvenience, since I had to request the check be voided at some expense (the owner offered to reimburse) and anxiety, since it was not clear if the check had fallen into wrong hands. We hope this will be resolved shortly.

Thank you for your review, such comments are always useful to try and improve the level of comfort for my tenants.

First of all, my apologies again to Elizabeth for misplacing the check. It's the first time this ever happened to me in 8 years of rentals and this is not a justification but an explanation.
I was going through a very difficult period of time during this rental. I know I carefully placed it, so much so that by the end of the rental, I couldn't put my hand on it. All the same, I paid you back all the fees for the stop payment on the check and offered you a week-end at my apartment at my own expense and I didn't charge either any extra fee for your early departure at 6.45am or for the final cleaning.

Once aware that the TV didn't work, I came by to try and fix the problem (however I was informed of the issue only one week before your departure). I didn't manage to fix it and the technical service was already closed. My attempt to find a solution in a Bouygues Telecom store the next morning only ended up in being told I needed to be by the device and to call the technical service (which I did, and the outcome was that the box was broken and needed to be changed). As you were going away to Normandy for the weekend and assured me it wasn't a problem for you if it didn't work for the short time that was left, and since I needed to be in the apartment to call, I waited for the end of your stay to deal with it.

As for the building entrance hall, we (the condo) pay for a cleaning man twice a week but even so and especially when it's rainy - as it was then - and with the coming and going to 6 different floors, it's normal that it's not spotless. There were smells because there were works on the water pipes in the street. Same for the telephone, you just had to ask because there is a telephone in the apartment, next to the TV with partly free calls. But usually my tenants ask me about it when they check in and I explain how it works to them, and what the conditions are.

However, what I really don't understand, is the comment on the "quite worn" sheets and dishcloths. I give special attention to cleanliness for my house and the household linens. All the linen, the towels and the cloths are less than a year old, of very high quality, washed and ironed. I also noticed that in the kitchen, the only cloths that had been used are those usually used to do the cleaning (they are clean but they are old cloths, sometimes torn and used as rags). The tenants didn't see that there is a whole pile of clean and new dishcloths (please ask next time). And yet, when they check in, I always tell my tenants to feel free to call me should they have any question or concern at all.

As I said before, I hope you kept happy memories of your stay in Paris and I look forward to seeing you again here or there for a lunch or dinner and to exchange views, as I offered we do straight from the start.
