Review by: Kathleen K., Oct 09 2015 From: United States, Apartment Rental: 23 days |
Overall, this rental was okay, superlative in some respects, lacking in others. It would be perfect for a tourist in town to see the sights and save money on food, or for a longer term renter who had a job in Paris and was out most of the time. The owner was extremely helpful and kind. The apartment is converted maids' chambers on the top floor of a very elegant complex of old buildings. First impression, for this Manhattanite, was not great. Entrance was through a service entrance, and the top floor (1 flight walkup, not overly burdensome) was somewhat forbidding: 60 rooms (numbered doors), most of which seemed unoccupied, ancient and unused toilets int he hall with open doors. The feeling was "abandoned building" or (worse) squatters. Not the case, as I learned subsequently, but not reassuring at first glance. The apartment itself was extremely tiny, but very well appointed. It was obvious that the owners had redone it in a very responsible way. The chief drawback of the apartment for me was the absence of a comfortable writing desk, complete with a chair with a back. I was in Paris to do research and writing, and it was not comfortable for those purposes. It also took a while for me to feel that the building was safe for late-night returns. It is, but it took some getting used to. As to the cost--compared to a hotel, it was of course very reasonable, particularly given that there was ktichen equipment and a washing machine (no dryer). However, I couldn't help noticing ads in real estate offices in the same neighborhood for more space for less than my total costs, including Habitat and non-refunded security deposit (deductions for electricity ad housecleaning), and at least one "studette"--which seemed to be the equivalent of this apartment, for 2/3 what I paid per month. I think you might want to urge the owner to meet Americans downstairs at their arrival to introduce them to the building's eccentricities personally. |
