Vence is located just inland from the Mediterranean coast and is filled with old, authentic houses and street markets where Provencal herbs are available. Being that it is located inland it has more of the country feel compared to the coast. Vacation rentals are available within Vence and the surrounding communities.
Because of the beauty of both the town and the surrounding country, many painters have tried to capture the landscapes and colors in their paintings including Matisse, Dufy, Chagall, Dubuffet, Soutine, Carzou and many others.
The Old City is one of the few towns from the Middle Ages to have preserved its ramparts. The City had three gateways, “La Porte du Peyra”, “La Porte du Signadour” and “La Porte du Portail-Levis” which you still enter through today. Inside the cobble stone streets are lined with stone houses.
Within the battlement walls there is a lot to discover including: the Marseilles columns which are remnants of a 3rd century Roman tower, the Château de Villeneuve which is now an art museum and the Cathedral and its treasures.
