NEIGHBORHOOD: This is a refreshingly sleepy tree-lined block of Bleecker, yet it is literally only steps away from the hubbub of SOHO, the funky Bowery or the thriving East Village. Our block boasts one of NY's best chic-peasant Italian restaurants, a French bistro, well-hidden bars at each end of the block both stay open ludicrously late; from the front door you can see the famous rock haunt on Bowery, and an off-Broadway theater stands at the corner of Lafayette, as does a postal shop; photo developers; dry-cleaners; and a restaurant with strong morning coffee and good breakfast that continues all afternoon. Within spitting distance there are too many restaurants, bars and shops to ever exhaust. Restaurants of any nationality, coffee shops, jazz clubs and performance spaces, cinemas , gyms, and boutiques with everything from antique to modern furniture, from trendy to the latest break-away fashions.
New York University, just two blocks away, hosts many cultural events. Downtown museums are five minutes walk away, and the subway goes directly from your doorstep to the major uptown museums. Here you are about equidistant from the Empire State Building and Wall Street. The original St. Patrick's Cathedral is two blocks south of here, the famous St. Patrick's is just a few subway stops northward. Greenwich Village is less than ten minutes walk to the west. Canal Street's famous bargains are less than 10 minutes walk south. All three bridges to Brooklyn are within a stone's throw (by cab, subway or even on foot). It would be tough to find a more central downtown location.
TRANSPORTATION: Public transportation is everywhere. The 4,5,6 line stops on the corner of this block. The B,D,F,Q line is one block away. The N&R trains are 3 blocks away. Buses stop 2 blocks away and taxis can be hailed at the corner of the block at any time of day or night.
