The canyon-like streets, exclusive boutiques and landmark buildings of the east Midtown area are part of the image of New York recognized around the world. Within this area lie famous stores such as Bloomingdale's and the corporate offices of huge international companies, making this district an important part of Manhattan's economic powerhouse. The opportunities for relaxation are numerous, however, ranging from sedentary coffee-drinking or eating in any of the many cafes and restaurants, to more energetic activities such as roller-blading in Central Park gracious avenues and fine architecture of the sophisticated Upper East Side of Manhattan island gives the streets of this district their elegant character. The up-market boutiques and numerous specialty stores in the area provide amazing shopping opportunities, and the many bars and restaurants are welcome havens from the hectic hustle and bustle in the street
