Dating from the feudal period, it was originally built to fortify the city and protect it against enemies. The City Hall is an elegant 18th Century building with beautiful pillars. The internal courtyard, bounded by porticoes, is worth a look. The market (Wednesday mornings and all-day Saturdays) takes place on the "Place aux Herbes" surrounded by ancient buildings in the heart of the ancient town. The Uzès area is famous for its wine and olive oil. Wine tasting sessions and visits of cellars would be an original way to discover the "French way of life"! For sport lovers, bicycle riders or pedestrians will find all kind of enchanting itineraries throughout the countryside of Uzès. Discover the landscapes horseback riding and kayaking or canoeing down the Gard river would be also possible. For horseshow buffs, the National Stud Farm is located in Uzes and features many national championship horseshows. Uzès also has a Golf course.
The famous "Pont du Gard" aqueduct, listed as historic monument, that the Romans built to bring water from the natural springs of Uzes to their major city in Nimes is nearby. Despite dating from the Roman period, it is in a remarkable state of preservation. To access Uzès, the closest Highway exit is Remoulins on the A9. By train, the closest subway station served by the high-speed TGV is Nîmes or Avignon (3hours and 40 minutes from Paris).
