Building: Situated in a culturally diverse neighborhood, the building is a self-contained unit of nine - 3 Single and 6 Duplex - apartments. A short flight of steps from street level leads up to a private, spacious patio with trees, potted plants, garden tables and chairs. At one end of the patio are nine doors that access individual apartments. The front gate is always locked and entry is with your own key, or, for visitors, through an intercom system. There is a large laundry in the commercial space below the building which also offers alterations and dry cleaning services.
Interior: Airy and full of light, the living room has a wrap around book shelf, antique furniture, decorative textiles, rugs, tapestries and plants. The walls, painted in ochre, indigo, and terracotta red, give the interiors a warm, tropical feel. The overall impression is of a space that's very relaxed and intimate. The large, antique Indian day bed in the living room comfortably sleeps 1. The dining table (which seats 6) can be extended to accommodate more than ten people. Stereo system. Upstairs, the sunny, master bedroom has a queen-size bed, cable television, with VCR and DVD and a walk in closet with shelves and ample clothes space. Bed linens are provided. The study (with a small balcony) has a computer and a fax. The bathroom has a bath tub with shower. There is also a half bathroom (toilet and sink) downstairs. Towels are provided. The kitchen is equipped with a large refrigerator, a dishwasher, a cooking range/ oven, toaster, juicer, and a wide array of cooking utensils.
Neighborhood: In Alphabet City, the heart of the East Village, things have always been a little different. Its streets are lined with outdoor cafes, music shops, vintage clothing boutiques, and bars of all shapes and sizes . It is the perfect "walking" neighborhood. You can stroll through historic St. Marks Place to Astor Place and Broadway. You can savor the open air Farmers market at Union Square or experimental theater at La Mama, check out the " six miles of books" at the Strand or drop in on a poetry reading or political theater at KGB or The Nuyorican Poets Café. There's late night jazz and music venues like CBGB that showcase local talent , and of course, food everywhere from all over the world. There is something for everybody here.
Others: A short ride on the M9 that stops in front of the building takes you to China town, Little Italy, the previous site of the World Trade Center, and beyond. One block south, east or west and you are on buses going to Soho, Greenwich Village, and across town to the West Side. A short walk to the L train on 14th.st. and First Avenue or the M14 bus in front of the subway station and you are conveniently linked to all destinations uptown.
