Description
Alcove Studio Vacation in Upper West Side (NY-14320)

This unique furnished loft studio vacation rental is located on the Upper West Side, an uptown neighborhood of Manhattan, New York. The building has its own washer and dryer in a laundry room. The accommodation is located on the top floor of a 19th Century Church rectory, with original stained glass window right in the living room!

The apartment features 19th century architecture, vaulted ceilings that have been modernized with skylights, an open kitchen with dining area, and a sleeping loft.

The living room of this fully furnished apartment features a flatscreen television with cable, coffee table, a DVD player, wireless Internet, and two sofa beds. Each sofa bed is for one adult. Please note that those sofabeds do not provide the same comfort than a real bed. There is no air conditioning in this apartment and although three large fans are provided, it does get hot during the summer months.

The lofted bedroom in this accommodation has a queen size bed and two end tables with lamps. The sleeping area is accessible by step ladder only and is not suitable for children or the elderly.

Though this alcove studio apartment is located on top of a Church rectory, there are no church bells to disturb your sleeping.

The neighborhood of this fully furnished vacation rental is the Upper West Side in Manhattan, New York City. It is conveniently located only two blocks away from the express train which will take you to Times Square in Midtown in just 2 stops! This is a very popular neighborhood, and home to some of New York's best shops and eateries, as well as the Lincoln Center and the Museum of Natural History. From Haute Cuisine to street food, you'll find restaurants like the new uptown location of the Shake Shack, Gray's Papaya and Boston transplant Emack and Bolio's Ice Cream Shop. This apartment is located just a block and a half away from Central Park. In fact, it is closest to a very special part of Central Park: Strawberry Fields, John Lennon's memorial section of the park. Next to the park is the famous building where John and Yoko lived: The Dakota.

Please note that the skylights in this rental are uncovered and do allow natural light into the apartment.

Please also be aware that the laundry is in the corridor and shared with the owner.

Excellent location, ideal to explore NY with your family. Very friendly and helpful hostess.

Maybe think of adding an extra chair when there are 5 guests.

Thank you again for everything, we'll be very happy to return.

Thanks so much, Emmanuelle! I'm glad you enjoyed your stay with us. I wish you had asked for an extra chair. I would have brought you one immediately. It's so seldom that we have 5 guests, I don't always think of everything.

      Hope to see you soon!

We met the owner's rep when we arrived and when we left. Everything went smoothly. He was there in case of a problem. The accommodation was very clean and even more beautiful than it appears on the photos. The only little downside is the fact that the large sofa bed doesn't accommodate two people as the gap in the middle makes it uncomfortable, but there was another sofa for one person. The location is great with the 2 subway stops just right next door and the neighborhood is really nice. We'll definitely be back!!!!

Thanks so much, Julie! I'm glad our Matt took good care of you during your stay. I'm sorry about the fold-down couch. Actually we never intended it for two grown people. It usually sleeps one adult or perhaps a couple of small children. Please do come back and see us soon!

This is an excellent find for staying in New York. We were welcomed warmly into a lovely apartment that is only 2 subway stops or a nice walk away from Times Square/theatre district and 1 block from Central Park. Although some things are a little worn and well-used, it is exactly as shown in the photos and includes everything you need for a stay in the city. I recommend it highly and hope to return there myself!

Thanks you so much for your kind words, Donna. We do try to keep things new and up to date, but the apartment gets a lot of use from kind and generous people like yourself. Come back and see us very soon!

My husband and I loved, loved, loved this place!! The owner was very kind and helpful to us and greeted us with much warmth. His assistant, who checked us out, was also great. The loft was incredibly unique and very clean. We really liked the wooden, winding staircase that led up to the apartment and the ladder that went up to the bed. The bed was very comfortable and we had restful sleeps after our long days of walking around the city. The loft location is perfect, very close to Central Park, the subway, many vegan restaurants, and grocery stores. We would most definitely book this place again.

We had such a fantastic time staying here! Living in the gorgeous apartment above the church made our holiday in New York an incredibly memorable experience. During our visit there was a snowstorm, so it was lovely to have a warm, clean and cosy home to go to each evening, and feel tucked away out of the hustle & bustle and the inclement weather.

We loved being uptown, as it's a little quieter and feels more like an authentic Manhattan-resident experience. The fact that the apartment is close to both the 1/2/3 and the A/B/C/D subway lines made getting around the city very easy.

Our hosts were warm and friendly, and helped us out with requests like holding our bags on the afternoon we left. We'll remember the spectacular stained glass window and the loft bed fondly! We'd certainly stay here again, very happily.

Very pleasant vacation rental for a short stay or for 2 people. The kitchen amenities are of very good quality and the bathroom very nice and functional.

The only 'real' bed is fine, but the lack of curtains means that people who sleep there are woken up very early in the morning.

On the other hand, the downstairs beds are substandard... the futon consists of two 50 cm wide mattresses split by a big gap and the springs can be badly felt.

The small pull-out couch is a bit better but it is impossible for 2 to sleep well on the futon, it is a bit small...

Finally, the stained-glass windows prevent the light from coming through, but not the cold... it was December and it was really cold with no extra heating.

However, as I said, it is great for 2 (or 3), the location (Upper West Side) is brilliant, and there are 5 subway lines less than a 5-minute walk away (1,2,3 and B, C).

      Accommodation Owner

Simon, I'm so sorry you had a bad experience. It is a very bright apartment, and we have not yet discovered a way to curtain or shutter the skylights.

The sofa-bed is new, but apparently not good enough for some of our guests, so we plan to replace it as soon as feasible. Indeed, the single sleeper chair is only a single bed, not a double bed.

This winter is the coldest winter in New York since 1895. That's why I stopped by to bring you an additional heater. You told me that the one additional heater was enough. If you had only asked for yet another one, I would have gotten one for you.

Once again, my apologies for your discomfort.

Thanks for your review, James. It looks as though we need a different sort of sofa bed to accommodate parties of more than two. Right now we're trying to find the best item of furniture for comfort and versatility.

Should be there by your next visit!

The apartment was very nice and cozy. Everything was accommodating and convenient. The only problem was that the bolts or screws that held the ladder to the wall was coming loose and I think it needs to be bolted to the wall better.

Other than that, everything was great. The location was perfect. It was great!

I'm so sorry that you had trouble with the ladder! If only you had phoned me I would have had it taken care of immediately. (That's why I put my private cell phone number on the contract.)

In any case, it's fixed now, so on your next trip you should have no trouble with it. Come back soon!

We were there during the New York Marathon and felt very comfortable in this apartment. We found everything was as described.

The only one thing that we would recommend would be to make the ceiling lights brighter, or lighten up the apartment with additional floor lamps, because with the high ceiling and the big stained-glass window, an additional source of light is absolutely needed!

Apart from that, everything was fabulous and we'll definitely choose this vacation rental again for our next trip. We definitely recommend it!

Cornelia, I'm sorry you found the apartment uncomfortably dark. I always urge our guests to phone me on my private cell phone at any time of the day or night for just this sort of problem. Next time you come, let me know in advance and I will make sure there are one or two additional lamps in the apartment.

The apartment was perfectly situated, with two subway stations only a block away and bus services likewise. Central Park was also only a short walk. It is also very well served by local restaurants and grocery stores. There was nothing we needed that wasn't a stone's throw away.

The apartment is accessed by a narrow staircase so will not suit everyone, but the owner assisted us with our luggage on arrival and departure and was more than happy to store our luggage while the apartment was prepared. As advertised, the apartment is loft-style and access to the bedroom was via a ladder. Don't let that deter as we two in our seventies had no difficulties.

If there was any minor criticism to make, the linen, while clean, was a little tired and the addition of crisp new sheets would be welcome.

This apartment is really unique as it is located in a church. The host is super friendly and helpful, you're given his telephone number upon arrival so you can contact him whenever you have any question/problem.

The apartment location is great. There's everything you need (subway, supermarket, cafés, restaurants, bank) just next door, 2 blocks away at the most. You're in Times Square in about 20 minutes with the subway. The neighborhood was amazingly quiet, we were expecting more traffic noise.

The only downside were the missing louvered blinds on the bedroom windows.

I'm very glad that the apartment proved convenient for you. Almost everybody remarks on our excellent location. A few people have also remarked on the early morning sunlight in the sleeping loft.

The blinds aren't really "missing," as we have never figured out a way to install blinds over the skylights.

Just returned from a great week staying in this apartment. Such a unique place to stay while in New York. Friendly and helpful owner. Ideal location..... very close to Central Park, two subway stations only a one block walk in either direction. Plenty of bus connections too.

The lack of air conditioning was not a problem for us... There are plenty of fans in the apartment to switch on to get the air moving.

When I next visit New York (whenever that may be!) I will be doing all I can to book this apartment again! A definate 10 out of 10!

I was very pleased with our stay in the alcove apartment. The owner was very kind and easy to communicate with at any time. It is located in a wonderful neighborhood that was safe and fun to walk around at any time of the day or night. The apartment is beautifully furnished right down to the high end plumbing fixtures. It really seemed like a home away from home and I would certainly stay there again!

This wasn't a problem for us, but I guess the only thing missing is air conditioning. While we experienced mild temperatures on our visit I wondered if it might be a problem in the warmer months.

Very good location a few steps from the subway and Central Park. Which means Manhattan is within "sneakers reach". The neighborhood is quite quiet, still it's New York, you can expect the peace and quiet you get in the country.

We spent about ten perfect days there. It was really nice to have a home, go shopping and cook. Much more private than a hotel room.

Oh yes! it would be great to have a juicer to prepare good lemonade! We're still waiting for our deposit which we couldn't get back the day we returned the keys.

Excellent location in Manhattan. Immaculate, very unusual and attractive apartment as it is located in a church.

    Areas of improvement:
    - we would have liked to meet the host

    - the skylights above the bed could do with a movable curtain that one could operate with a small solar control. We installed one on a skylight in our Paris apartment. It doesn't cost much and it would be better than the big pieces of cardboard boxes that you have to handle and lay flat onto the windows.

    - in the kitchen area, it would be helpful to have a light above the sink and the kitchen counter.

Overall, we were delighted with this vacation rental where we'll gladly return.

Very convenient, well equipped and very well located vacation rental, the owner is charming and helpful, we will rent the same apartment again when we come back.

2 small reservations: the 2 sofas uncomfortable bedding, but our 22 and 25 year-old children were so tired that it didn't stop them from sleeping, and the fact that you can hear the cars driving past, luckily the neighborhood is quiet. Curtains on the bedroom skylight would be convenient as the light wakes you up early.

These reservations shouldn't make you forget the fact that we are very happy with the rental.

Yes, you can hear the traffic from the street. It's the price you pay for being in the most vibrant city in the world.

My wife and I stayed here for a week in December, and found the apartment to be absolutely fantastic. We can't fault it in any way. The owner was incredibly welcoming and helpful to us first time New Yorkers!

The apartment itself is a real gem - spotlessly clean, with all the amenities and mod-cons you can think of, and very unique. I can't think of many apartments with a beautiful stained glass window in the lounge and ladders leading to the bedroom (which for the record - we loved!)

The location is ideal. Central Park and The Museum of Natural History are practically on your doorstep, and the subway downtown is just around the corner. There are plenty of shops, grocery stores and restaurants within walking distance, and we were never stuck for choice when it came to dining out or eating in.

We would definitely rent this apartment again for our next trip to New York. We can't wait to come back!

The kitchen equipment is more than enough for basic cooking in the apt. It's also very well located and easily accessible with the subway and close to quite a few spots you can walk to.

Small points that could do with some improvement though: turn the heating down (especially in the bathroom which isn't big!) and maybe clean with products that are not so strong because it smells a lot when you get in.

The accommodation owner is a wonderful person who goes above and beyond the call of duty as an owner. The apartment is in a fantastic location - great neighborhood and close to two subway lines. It is well appointed, comfortable, spacious and clean. The bonus of washing and drying facilities was particularly helpful. There was some noise from building work nearby, but that is not the fault of the apartment.

That aside it is in a very quiet street with many, many restaurants nearby, a corner store very close and excellent food and other shopping options nearby. Prospective renters should be aware that the sleeping area is in a loft space that requires the negotiation of a steep ladder - so not suitable for anyone with a mobility problem.

Otherwise, this is a great apartment that I would rent again.

My daughter and I were in New York most of the month of July, 2012 and stayed in this apartment the whole time.

There is no airconditioning and it was very hot in the apartment. Some of the other reviews said they got used to the heat after a few days, but we did not really ever get used to it.

The owners did provide about 9 fans to try to help, but blowing hot air around is still not airconditioning.

I would stay in this apartment agian in a heartbeat, but not in July.

The bathroom, towels, sheets, kitchen, washer and dryer were all top notch. The apartment is really close to the subway stations and we always felt totally safe. It was our first time in the city so everything was new to us. This apartment was a welcoming place to call home.

Yes! The apartment is hot in the summer. Some of our guests don't mind the heat, others do. We always remind the NYHabitat agents to remind the clients before they book that the apartment is not air-conditioned and that New York is hot in the summer. Once the client has moved in, however, our options are limited.

We do not advertise this apartment as an air-conditioned one and indeed ask agents to disclose this to clients. However, we have taken both the guest's and owner's comments into account and therefore decided to take it a step further. We've added a note in the property description in order to make this even clearer to prospective guests.

The accommodation is really very nice and welcoming. The equipment seems to be of good quality and complete, except for the mattresses on the two sofas which would need to be replaced. The bed on the mezzanine is perfect. Communications with the owner, whether by email or in person, were very nice.

We're sorry the guests were uncomfortable. They were lovely people and we would be happy to have them back.

Prospective guests should be aware, though, that they are renting a studio apartment. There is only one bed, which sleeps two comfortably.

The fold-down sofa and fold-out chair have also accommodated guests of all ages, who usually find us an economical and desirable alternative to a two or three-bedroom apartment. But if greater luxury is desired, a larger apartment would be a better bet.

I really loved staying here! It was so much better than staying at a hotel. It was close to many conveniences and had a lot of home-like touches. I found it very easy to travel to all of the NYC attractions from the area. The neighborhood was nice and felt safe, even while walking around late at night.

The owner was very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about the area. I had no problem bringing my suitcases up the stairs to the 3rd floor, but the lack of elevator may be a concern for anyone with a physical limitation.

This is a great space in the Upper West Side. It is such a wonderful value for the location and the size of apartment in New York City. The apartment shows some signs of wear, scuffs on walls, loose tiles on floor, coffee table leg loose, bathroom fan rattles, but you'd get that in any place that hosts people day in and day out.

The only inconvenience in the apartment, and this may seem small, but the full-size ironing board does not collapse and takes up the entire closet, making it impossible to stow away suitcases, etc.

The owner is fantastic and was prompt with communication. We appreciated this accommodation so much that we are already planning our next trip back and will definitely stay here.

The owner informed us that the coffee table leg has been repaired, the ironing board replaced and that the apartment will be repainted early 2012. Regarding the closet space, the owner explained that it is a studio apartment and so, even if the closet and chest of drawers are spacious, storage space may still not be completely sufficient for each tenant's large suitcase.

We had a wonderful time in NY and we would not hesitate to rent from this establishment in the futur. We live in a very quiet area and so yes it was noisy but anything is noisy compared to our home. We really would like to return with our children. It's small but cozy, and so this is what we needed! Of course the pricing is probably good for NY but for us it was a little high, because we needed to add $150.00 US to park our car for 3 nights. We might have to stay in Jersey next time just for the added parking charge.

Overall, the apartment was spacious and well appointed. Although the apartment was clean, it did appear as though it could have used "freshening up". The paint appeared tired and in places was stained from age or water damage. The coffee table was less than stable and one couch was clean, but again, tired looking.

None of this would impact my decision to return and stay in the same apartment -- the location was fantastic (transit, shops, atmosphere) and the charm of the stained glass window is unique.

The owner/landlord was kind and helpful.

This studio in St Paul's church is a wonderful secret in New York. The apartment is fully furnished and has all the amenities you might need and more!

The accommodation owner was very nice and was always on time. Everything went smoothly and he even came one day before our departure (we were leaving at 5 am to go to the airport) to return the deposit.

The only thing I can think of to make it even better would be a ceiling fan or an AC unit, due to the high temperatures there is not much air circulating. The stairs are not ideal either to carry large pieces of luggage but these details are nothing compared to the neighborhod, the easy access to public transportation and the quality of the apartment.

To sum up, I must say my friend and I were very happy to stay in this beautiful neigborhood and enjoy the quiet and private space. If I return to New York I would book this vacation rental again without a doubt.

Ideally located (1 block from Central Park and 2-3 blocks from Hudson River - several subway stations a few steps away, etc.), very well equipped, suitable for a family with 2 teenagers, pleasant street - and not too noisy, we could really make the most of our week's stay in Manhattan.

The apartment was everything we expected and more! It was spotlessly clean and surprisingly spacious. All the amenities you need were provided including things like an iron and ironing board, washing powder for our clothes and all cooking facilities.

The location is spectacular. The subway is right around the corner and Central Park just one block away. The street itself is entirely residential and as soon as we got there, we felt like this was our home for a week. We also felt safe at all times.

One thing that would be helpful is an instruction manual on how to use some of the facilities. We were at a loss on how to work the taps that alternated the shower and bath, and we were a little unsure on how to work the heating. So perhaps a one pager 'how to' guide, would be something other renters from outside the USA might find handy.

I highly recommend this vacation rental to anyone who wants to spend their time away from the craziness of the tourist areas and who want to feel like they actually live in NYC.

So many things I read about renting an apartment in New York indicated it should not be done. Well I am so glad we didn't listen to that because renting this apartment was a fantastic experience and it would have been such a shame to be scared off it by doom and gloomers insisting all apartment rentals in New York are scams.

The apartment was really cute, of a great size for the two of us and stocked with everything we could want for. It was right near the subway station, lots of shops, quite a few restaurants and fast food outlets. We were able to walk to loads of places, including Central Park (really close), Time's Square and surrounds (about half an hour), the Empire State building, Rockefeller Centre etc. We really could not complain about anything and wold recommend this apartment to others, for sure.

The only thing I would say is that it may not be suitable for the elderly or the very young as the main sleeping area is up quite a high ladder. This made for a great use of space, but it might be a bit difficult if you aren't very mobile or have little kids wanting to climb the ladder all the time.

It was perfect for us though! The owner was lovely and we had complete privacy. Five stars!

I was delighted with our stay at the apartment. It was very pretty, very spacious, and had absolutely everything we needed - even down to a little sewing kit in the bathroom cabinet and welcoming tea and coffee.

It has a great location, being a block from Broadway and a metro station in one direction and two blocks from Central Park in the other. The owner and his son were extremely pleasant and helpful. I would love to stay there again if I come back to New York.

[This Upper West Side vacation rental] apartment was a great location. The apartment itself was very clean, tidy and well-maintained.

Upon arrival the apartment was warm (which we were most grateful of in
    December)!

Everything worked well (gas, electric, hot water etc). We had no issues at all.
    The owner was most helpful.

We had a wonderful stay in New York and we were extremely satisfied with our
    accommodation.

The apartment met all our expectations - excellent location on the Upper West Side between two subway lines, good restaurants and shops just around the corner, well equipped, comfortable, lots of character and reasonably quiet. The wireless internet was very useful and the washing machine and dryer were also a bonus. The owner was very helpful and happy to hold our bags on the day we checked out so we could continue our sightseeing.

Our only criticisms would be that the entry stairway could do with a coat of paint to freshen it up and the apartment is showing some signs of wear. The freezer was well overdue for defrosting although the fridge worked well. The two sofas could benefit from a thorough clean especially underneath/inside the sofa assembly.

Both Emilya Kraus and Beth Weiler from New York Habitat were efficient and very pleasant to deal with. We would have no hesitation using NY Habitat again and recommend them to family and friends. We would be more than happy to stay in the same vacation rental apartment again as it was excellent value.

Further to this review, we contacted the owner of this vacation rental who confirmed that he is aware of the stairway needing to be painted and is looking into having this done. The freezer will be defrosted as soon as possible. The apartments, including the sofas and sofa beds are cleaned thoroughly between each rental period and the owner works hard in the hopes that each of his tenants is satisfied.

We were very happy with the loft! Everything went smoothly, our accommodation owner waited for us to give us the keys. The loft apartment was very comfortable and clean, exactly as it appeared on the photos!

The subway station round the corner was also very nice! We would book it again in a heartbeat!!!!!

Matthew and his girlfriend could not have been more pleasant. They were totally delightful in every way. When they left, Matthieu was already planning to stay with us again in May next year.
