Description
Alcove Studio Vacation in Upper West Side (NY-14320)

This unique furnished loft studio vacation rental is located on the Upper West Side, an uptown neighborhood of Manhattan, New York. The building has its own washer and dryer in a laundry room. The accommodation is located on the top floor of a 19th Century Church rectory, with original stained glass window right in the living room!

The apartment features 19th century architecture, vaulted ceilings that have been modernized with skylights, an open kitchen with dining area, and a sleeping loft.

The living room of this fully furnished apartment features a flatscreen television with cable, coffee table, a DVD player, wireless Internet, and two sofa beds. There is no air conditioning in this apartment and although three large fans are provided, it does get hot during the summer months.

The lofted bedroom in this accommodation has a queen size bed and two end tables with lamps. The sleeping area is accessible by step ladder only and is not suitable for children or the elderly.

Though this alcove studio apartment is located on top of a Church rectory, there are no church bells to disturb your sleeping.

The neighborhood of this fully furnished vacation rental is the Upper West Side in Manhattan, New York City. It is conveniently located only two blocks away from the express train which will take you to midtown in about 10 minutes! This is a very popular and wealthy neighborhood, and home to some of New York's best shops and eateries. From Haute Cuisine to street food, you'll find restaurants like the new uptown location of the Shake Shack, Gray's Papaya and Boston transplant Emack and Bolio's Ice Cream Shop. This apartment is located just a block and a half away from Central Park. In fact, it is closest to a very special part of Central Park: Strawberry Fields, John Lennon's memorial section of the park. Next to the park is the famous building where John and Yoko lived: The Dakota. It is located near Lincoln Center and the Museum of Natural History, as well.

Please note that the skylights in this rental are uncovered and do allow natural light into the apartment.

Please also be aware that the laundry is in the corridor and shared with the owner.

Perfect stay! The accommodation is ideally situated in Manhattan. Subway station and grocery store nearby. 2 minutes away from central park.

Residential area, safe, not very noisy. Warm welcome and discretion assured during the stay. Washing machine was useful after spending the day walking. Accommodation is in a church, completely ATYPICAL!

Incredible for NYC... I recommend this vacation rental in a heartbeat.

Very good location, close to shops and subway. Spacious for 4 people. Very clean, well equipped, very light.

Original as it is located in the church. And quiet (you can just hear a background noise). The host is very hospitable and courteous.

Warm welcome from the host's rep, the stay was seamless. Ideal location with two subway lines very close by. However, for the check-out, someone came at the arranged time but didn't introduce themselves nor did they say hello / goodbye, everything was done in less than a minute.

My wife and I stayed here for a week in December, and found the apartment to be absolutely fantastic. We can't fault it in any way. The owner was incredibly welcoming and helpful to us first time New Yorkers!

The apartment itself is a real gem - spotlessly clean, with all the amenities and mod-cons you can think of, and very unique. I can't think of many apartments with a beautiful stained glass window in the lounge and ladders leading to the bedroom (which for the record - we loved!)

The location is ideal. Central Park and The Museum of Natural History are practically on your doorstep, and the subway downtown is just around the corner. There are plenty of shops, grocery stores and restaurants within walking distance, and we were never stuck for choice when it came to dining out or eating in.

We would definitely rent this apartment again for our next trip to New York. We can't wait to come back!

The flat located on the third floor of Grace and St Paul's Church suited my needs exactly. It is located 5-6 blocks from Lincoln Centre and 2 blocks from the 72nd st subway station. There are several excellent places to eat or buy food nearby.

The flat is clean, quiet, pleasant, and simply decorated. The price is excellent for a single traveller and the owner was very helpful. I plan to rerent in the future when planning my next trip to NYC.

A lovely, quiet street. Apartment full of character. Amenities very good. Cleaner comes in weekly and does a thorough job including washing and changing bed linen and towels.Owner very helpful. Always felt safe walking around the area even late at night.

Subway station close by. Central Park within easy walking distance.Stairs up to the apartment and ladder to bedroom loft could be a problem for some people.

I am glad you enjoyed the apartment and always felt safe around the area. It is unfortunate that the steps may be a problem for some people as at least one guest has had trouble with them, but it is not easy maximizing space in Manhattan where space is a real luxury!

This apartment is a rare find in New York, it is very affordable and is extremely well situated to other amenities such as restaurants, subway access, food stores and other shops. It is within walking distance of some of New York's most visited sites as well as being close to Central Park for some relaxation in the afternoon after visiting other NY sites.

The owner is very helpful and polite and was a delight to talk to as well as providing a good service. The accomodation is quirky, with no elevators to the apartment and steps up to the bed but this provides a very pleasant alternative experience to New York. The facilities were of a very high standard, no complaints!

Everything that could be done for the occupants was done. We especially liked the blessing of the animals service in October! Thoroughly recommend this apartment!

The apartment is in a fantastic location - great neighborhood and close to two subway lines. It is well appointed, comfortable, spacious and clean. The bonus of washing and drying facilities was particularly helpful. There was some noise from building work nearby, but that is not the fault of the apartment.

That aside it is in a very quiet street with many, many restaurants nearby, a corner store very close and excellent food and other shopping options nearby. Prospective renters should be aware that the sleeping area is in a loft space that requires the negotiation of a steep ladder - so not suitable for anyone with a mobility problem.

Otherwise, this is a great apartment that I would rent again.

      Thank you Gavin,
I'm very sorry that you had trouble with the ladder to the loft, and I hope that this won't discourage you from visiting again. I have the same ladder in my own apartment and have no difficulty getting my elderly and rather bulky frame up and down. But yes, those who are infirm may have trouble with the ladder, and young children should be carefully supervised when using it.

New York Habitat spoke with the owner and he says he has no idea what the client meant when he mentioned construction noise because there is none to his knowledge. He says the entire block is completely quiet. It might have been a singular incident . Thank you for your comment Gavin.

The apartment is very clean, very well located in a residential area with shops and a short walk to the subway. The owner is very friendly and not at all intrusive.

The only downside was the sleeping accommodation, as the sofa bed was a bit slouchy, but we pointed it out to M, who told us he was going to change it. Otherwise, everything is almost perfect, although it must be noted that the apartment is very hot and therefore equipped with a large number of fans that need to run at night in summer, which can be annoying for light sleepers.

In addition to the perfect location, this rental has a washing machine and dryer at your disposal, which is a big plus.

This apartment fantastic! This was our second stay and we will be back again for a third...the only question is when!!

The location is superb. It is so close to Central Park, subway stops, grocery, restaurants, Lincoln Center, etc. Yet, it is on a very quiet, mostly residential block. It is the ideal place for a couple to have as a home base while visiting the city.

The owner is very helpful and friendly. The apartment is an excellent value, is quite charming and you feel cozy and safe nestled in your little loft space on the upper west side!

We liked the little flat and felt to be welcome. You (or those, who are helping you) seem to know very well, what a guest needs (we liked the little extras like fresh water in the fridge or the adapter for the electric system...) and on the other side do not fill the apartment with unnecessary things.

And that there was even the chance to take part in your service on sunday was fine too. We like to visit services in foreign churches. It always gives us correction and new ideas....

My daughter and I were in New York most of the month of July, 2012 and stayed in this apartment the whole time.

There is no airconditioning and it was very hot in the apartment. Some of the other reviews said they got used to the heat after a few days, but we did not really ever get used to it.

The owners did provide about 9 fans to try to help, but blowing hot air around is still not airconditioning.

I would stay in this apartment agian in a heartbeat, but not in July.

The bathroom, towels, sheets, kitchen, washer and dryer were all top notch. The apartment is really close to the subway stations and we always felt totally safe. It was our first time in the city so everything was new to us. This apartment was a welcoming place to call home.

Yes! The apartment is hot in the summer. Some of our guests don't mind the heat, others do. We always remind the NYHabitat agents to remind the clients before they book that the apartment is not air-conditioned and that New York is hot in the summer. Once the client has moved in, however, our options are limited.

We do not advertise this apartment as an air-conditioned one and indeed ask agents to disclose this to clients. However, we have taken both the guest's and owner's comments into account and therefore decided to take it a step further. We've added a note in the property description in order to make this even clearer to prospective guests.

The accommodation is really very nice and welcoming. The equipment seems to be of good quality and complete, except for the mattresses on the two sofas which would need to be replaced. The bed on the mezzanine is perfect. Communications with the owner, whether by email or in person, were very nice.

We're sorry the guests were uncomfortable. They were lovely people and we would be happy to have them back.

Prospective guests should be aware, though, that they are renting a studio apartment. There is only one bed, which sleeps two comfortably.

The fold-down sofa and fold-out chair have also accommodated guests of all ages, who usually find us an economical and desirable alternative to a two or three-bedroom apartment. But if greater luxury is desired, a larger apartment would be a better bet.

I really loved staying here! It was so much better than staying at a hotel. It was close to many conveniences and had a lot of home-like touches. I found it very easy to travel to all of the NYC attractions from the area. The neighborhood was nice and felt safe, even while walking around late at night.

The owner was very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about the area. I had no problem bringing my suitcases up the stairs to the 3rd floor, but the lack of elevator may be a concern for anyone with a physical limitation.

This is a great space in the Upper West Side. It is such a wonderful value for the location and the size of apartment in New York City. The apartment shows some signs of wear, scuffs on walls, loose tiles on floor, coffee table leg loose, bathroom fan rattles, but you'd get that in any place that hosts people day in and day out.

The only inconvenience in the apartment, and this may seem small, but the full-size ironing board does not collapse and takes up the entire closet, making it impossible to stow away suitcases, etc.

The owner is fantastic and was prompt with communication. We appreciated this accommodation so much that we are already planning our next trip back and will definitely stay here.

The owner informed us that the coffee table leg has been repaired, the ironing board replaced and that the apartment will be repainted early 2012. Regarding the closet space, the owner explained that it is a studio apartment and so, even if the closet and chest of drawers are spacious, storage space may still not be completely sufficient for each tenant's large suitcase.

We had a wonderful time in NY and we would not hesitate to rent from this establishment in the futur. We live in a very quiet area and so yes it was noisy but anything is noisy compared to our home. We really would like to return with our children. It's small but cozy, and so this is what we needed! Of course the pricing is probably good for NY but for us it was a little high, because we needed to add $150.00 US to park our car for 3 nights. We might have to stay in Jersey next time just for the added parking charge.

Overall, the apartment was spacious and well appointed. Although the apartment was clean, it did appear as though it could have used "freshening up". The paint appeared tired and in places was stained from age or water damage. The coffee table was less than stable and one couch was clean, but again, tired looking.

None of this would impact my decision to return and stay in the same apartment -- the location was fantastic (transit, shops, atmosphere) and the charm of the stained glass window is unique.

This studio in St Paul's church is a wonderful secret in New York. The apartment is fully furnished and has all the amenities you might need and more!

The accommodation owner was very nice and was always on time. Everything went smoothly and he even came one day before our departure (we were leaving at 5 am to go to the airport) to return the deposit.

The only thing I can think of to make it even better would be a ceiling fan or an AC unit, due to the high temperatures there is not much air circulating. The stairs are not ideal either to carry large pieces of luggage but these details are nothing compared to the neighborhod, the easy access to public transportation and the quality of the apartment.

To sum up, I must say my friend and I were very happy to stay in this beautiful neigborhood and enjoy the quiet and private space. If I return to New York I would book this vacation rental again without a doubt.

Ideally located (1 block from Central Park and 2-3 blocks from Hudson River - several subway stations a few steps away, etc.), very well equipped, suitable for a family with 2 teenagers, pleasant street - and not too noisy, we could really make the most of our week's stay in Manhattan.

Since everybody is interested in the negative points, this apartment has only 2 negative notes: a 3rd floor walk up, which is tough when you arrive with your lugggage and, as you can see in the pictures, there is a ladder to climb to the bed.

The apartment was everything we expected and more! It was spotlessly clean and surprisingly spacious. All the amenities you need were provided including things like an iron and ironing board, washing powder for our clothes and all cooking facilities.

The location is spectacular. The subway is right around the corner and Central Park just one block away. The street itself is entirely residential and as soon as we got there, we felt like this was our home for a week. We also felt safe at all times.

One thing that would be helpful is an instruction manual on how to use some of the facilities. We were at a loss on how to work the taps that alternated the shower and bath, and we were a little unsure on how to work the heating. So perhaps a one pager 'how to' guide, would be something other renters from outside the USA might find handy.

I highly recommend this vacation rental to anyone who wants to spend their time away from the craziness of the tourist areas and who want to feel like they actually live in NYC.

So many things I read about renting an apartment in New York indicated it should not be done. Well I am so glad we didn't listen to that because renting this apartment was a fantastic experience and it would have been such a shame to be scared off it by doom and gloomers insisting all apartment rentals in New York are scams.
The apartment was really cute, of a great size for the two of us and stocked with everything we could want for. It was right near the subway station, lots of shops, quite a few restaurants and fast food outlets. We were able to walk to loads of places, including Central Park (really close), Time's Square and surrounds (about half an hour), the Empire State building, Rockefeller Centre etc. We really could not complain about anything and wold recommend this apartment to others, for sure.

The only thing I would say is that it may not be suitable for the elderly or the very young as the main sleeping area is up quite a high ladder. This made for a great use of space, but it might be a bit difficult if you aren't very mobile or have little kids wanting to climb the ladder all the time.

It was perfect for us though! The owner was lovely and we had complete privacy. Five stars!

I was delighted with our stay at the apartment. It was very pretty, very spacious, and had absolutely everything we needed - even down to a little sewing kit in the bathroom cabinet and welcoming tea and coffee.

It has a great location, being a block from Broadway and a metro station in one direction and two blocks from Central Park in the other. The owner and his son were extremely pleasant and helpful. I would love to stay there again if I come back to New York.

[This Upper West Side vacation rental] apartment was a great location. The apartment itself was very clean, tidy and well-maintained.

Upon arrival the apartment was warm (which we were most grateful of in
    December)!

Everything worked well (gas, electric, hot water etc). We had no issues at all.
    The owner was most helpful.

We had a wonderful stay in New York and we were extremely satisfied with our
    accommodation.

The apartment met all our expectations - excellent location on the Upper West Side between two subway lines, good restaurants and shops just around the corner, well equipped, comfortable, lots of character and reasonably quiet. The wireless internet was very useful and the washing machine and dryer were also a bonus. The owner was very helpful and happy to hold our bags on the day we checked out so we could continue our sightseeing.

Our only criticisms would be that the entry stairway could do with a coat of paint to freshen it up and the apartment is showing some signs of wear. The freezer was well overdue for defrosting although the fridge worked well. The two sofas could benefit from a thorough clean especially underneath/inside the sofa assembly.

Both Emilya Kraus and Beth Weiler from New York Habitat were efficient and very pleasant to deal with. We would have no hesitation using NY Habitat again and recommend them to family and friends. We would be more than happy to stay in the same vacation rental apartment again as it was excellent value.

Further to this review, we contacted the owner of this vacation rental who confirmed that he is aware of the stairway needing to be painted and is looking into having this done. The freezer will be defrosted as soon as possible. The apartments, including the sofas and sofa beds are cleaned thoroughly between each rental period and the owner works hard in the hopes that each of his tenants is satisfied.

We liked the vacation rental. A part to highlight its location, it was a very good area near Central Park. The apartment has everything you need, is very nice...

The most important has been the attention of the assistant to the owner, who has served us, very helpful because he spoke Spanish and because he solved the problems we had.

    The apartment is fully recommended.

Our staying in New York has been a wonderful period and the apartment we rented has been one of the reasons for that. Very nice position, nearby Central Park, easy access to the subway, to shops and restaurants, quiet and clean.

The apartment is well equipped, just like a real house and makes you feel at home from the first day. We travelled a lot in NY and our apartment was the best place to rest after a long day visiting NY.

The owner has been very kind, providing us all the essential information and keeping our luggage during the last day letting us enjoy our staying until the last minute. We heartily recommend this vacation rental to anyone who wishes to feel like a New Yorker for a few days.

We had a wonderful stay in the apartment we rented through New York Habitat.

The landlord was very helpful and courteous - made us feel very comfortable about staying in the apartment. He even went to the trouble of purchasing extra fans while we were there to help alleviate some of the July heat.

The apartment itself was great. We loved the space, and all the amenities. It was perfect for a (lengthy) stay in the city. We enjoyed the fact that we had an extensive cable tv offering (including many channels OnDemand). The kitchen was well-stocked and more than sufficient for our needs. The bed was very comfortable. The stained glass window made the apartment really special!

The only negative was the lack of air-conditioning. We were not prepared for how hot New York can be in July, so were a bit taken aback by how hot the apartment was when we arrived. But we acclimatized and enjoyed our stay none-the-less.

I would definitely recommend this apartment (and New York Habitat) to my friends and family.

Our trip to New York was fantastic and the apartments that New York Habitat supplied were terrific.

The apartments were clean and very central to local subways which was critical to getting around in your wonderful city. If we ever travel to New York again, we will contact New York Habitat for our accommodation needs.

We were very pleased with everything.

The apartment was fabulous - clean, well-stocked with every dish, nice kitchen tools, nice bath towels etc.The owner was welcoming and very helpful.

The only thing we could have used was one more warm blanket for the 2nd sleeper sofa.

We'll definitely stay [at this Upper West side vacation rental] again!

This apartment would be my first choice for accommodation the next time I'm in New York. The location was excellent, the owner and his son were wonderful to deal with and the apartment beyond exceeded my expectations.

The apartment was beautifully decorated with more than enough plates, crockery and cutlery to use. I was impressed with the high quality appliances (coffee machine, stove top and heating in particular) and also the plentiful cleaning supplies.

In particular, I would like to thank Gisela for her consistently high service when organising our stay in the apartment. Her constant communication and thoroughness of that communication was impressive and I would not hesitate to recommend your service to others and to use New York Habitat again for when I need to book an apartment in the future.

We have been very happy to stay in the apartment we rented through your website.

The flat was nice, had good furniture and was clean. The location was excellent, near to many subway lines stations and very quiet. Maybe a bit cold despite the heating was at maximum level but there was an additional heater to use, so we cannot really complain. We would definitely recommend to our friends to stay in this apartment.

During our visit to NYC we eloped and thought the apartment was perfect for our stay. It is beautiful and has a lot of character. It is well maintained and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The location is great with many local restaurants and stores. The subway is minutes away but you can simply walk to a lot of major attractions. The [accommodation] owner is very helpful and considerate. We loved this apartment and can't wait to go back one day! We would totally recommend it.
