Cassis in Bouches du Rhône district, is a very ancient village with fishing port on the Riviera near Marseilles and Toulon. A walk through the old village street will enable you to discover some nice old buildings (some with colorful facades). In the port, small fishing boats (called "pointus") share the space with yachts and tourist boats to dicover the Calanques. The calanques are deep narrow inlets, sort of Provencal fiords, in the rocky cliffs along the coast between Cassis and Marseilles. The calanques were formed by rivers flowing into the sea, submerged aeons ago by the rising level of the Mediterranean.
The 14th century "Chateau de la Maison des Baux" dominates the harbour. You will find various cafés and restaurants by the port but also in the small pedestrian streets, together with trendy shops. You will also enjoy the famous cassis wine. Access : 10 km from Marseilles, 10 km from La Ciotat, easy access to the motorway to Marseilles, Aix and Toulon, but also Nice.
You can get to Cassis by road (motor way) or by train (TGV Train station via Marseilles, then train station in Cassis on Marseille - Toulon Hyeres Train line) . You can also fly through Marseille Provence Airport (40mn drive).
