Because of the beauty of both the town and the surrounding country, many painters have tried to capture the landscapes and colors in their paintings including Matisse, Dufy, Chagall, Dubuffet, Soutine, Carzou and many others.
The Old City is one of the few towns from the Middle Ages to have preserved its ramparts. The City had three gateways, “La Porte du Peyra”, “La Porte du Signadour” and “La Porte du Portail-Levis” which you still enter through today. Inside the cobble stone streets are lined with stone houses.
Within the battlement walls there is a lot to discover including: the Marseilles columns which are remnants of a 3rd century Roman tower, the Château de Villeneuve which is now an art museum and the Cathedral and its treasures.
