Arles is the actually the former capital of Roman Gaul and symbol of a radiating Christian past. Its renown has spread abroad because of a famous painter who decided to stay there: Vincent Van Gogh. Arles has become an important touristic center with an exceptional heritage from antiquity. Not to be missed: Saint-Trophime church & cloister, Montmajour Abbey, the Roman Amphitheater & the Antiques Arenas.
But Arles is also at the door of the Natural Conservation area of La Camargue. La Camargue is actually an 'island' enclosed between the Rhône and the Mediterranean, that owes its origin and its very nature to water. A complex drainage and irrigation system has allowed its resources to be put to better use. The area left to nature has preserved much of its original biological wealth. Within the park, the National Camargue Reserve, created in 1927, is a highly protected space which man can only touch at certain places. The ideal way to discover this sandy area of 75 000 hectares, with a salt wind from the sea blowing, is to ride on horseback around the. Not to be missed: the town of Les Saintes-Marie de la Mer as well as the timeless village of Beauduc.
If you are traveling by plane, the closest airport is either Marseille-Provence (45 minutes drive) or Nîmes-Garons (35 minutes drive). Both have daily flights to/from Paris & London. Otherwise most international flight connections are made through Paris-Charles de Gaulle International Airport. By train, Avignon TGV train station is about 45 minutes drive. The TGV runs from Paris to Avignon in 2 hours and 40 minutes.
