Hello,

There are three things about this rental that we want to bring to your attention as it highly bothered us:

1) The landlady does not authorize to cook meat and she put a sign which indicates "no pork, no lard" (I can provide a picture if needed). There is no frying pan for that matter. So, you rent an apartment with a kitchen in which you can eat cold meals (except for breakfast) or cook solely pasta and rice. It is not right for us, as tenants, and if we rent an apartment, it is also because we do not want to go to restaurants every day and cook our own meals.

2) We left air conditioning running one day when we were out so that the apartment could be cooler in the evening. The landlady told us it was forbidden and the day after, when we were out, she came to disassemble the air conditioning unit and store it in a cupboard (I can provide a picture if needed). So, she does not respect what is said in the rental agreement. If it is not possible to use air conditioning as you wish (day and/or night, whether you are in or outside the apartment) whereas it is included in the rental price, she should remove the air conditioning unit from the agreement and state that the apartment does not have any.

3) The landlady comes in the apartments in the absence of the tenants (as she disassembled the air conditioning unit and it was not the only time). It is unacceptable that this person slips inside the apartments in the absence of the tenants, whether it is to survey or anything else. We obviously do not know if she allows herself to go through tenants' belongings. We did not leave valuables but how could one be sure that we could be confident by leaving some money for instance. To the extent that we respected the building quietness and were living normally, there were no reason to come and see what was happening. By the way, we left the apartment in an impeccable condition.

Could you please clarify these points with the landlady as this will surely be useful for the future tenants of her apartments.

Best regards

There is obviously a breakdown in communication and if you are writing a review you should be completely honest.

1. The sign says NO PORK. It does not say NO MEAT. We do not allow pork because it is not an easy odor to remove and we have to take into consideration that the next person may be a vegetarian. We have three pans. One frying, one saucepan and one pot. He never once approached me to ask if there was a frying pan. I am located in the building one floor down.

2. We have a policy that is explained and we have pictures on the door to remind you not to be wasteful. If you are not home please do not leave the Air Conditioner or Lights on. The air conditioning was left on during the day on more than one occasion because they were using it to dry their wet laundry while they were out, which we do not allow. They hung their wet clothes on the fan, which is not made to support that kind of weight and allowed it to drip all over the wood flooring which can cause the floor to buckle and can be expensive replacement. If they do not understand the rental agreement they signed they should have said something.

3a.. We do not charge extra for the air conditioning. It is a courtesy, however this will change for the New Year. The air conditioners are installed on June 15 and removed Sept 15 in all 9 rooms. So it not a punishment and were not removed the following day but rather two days after. It is a standard procedure for us.

3b. There are a total of 9 rooms that I personally oversee and clean, two bathrooms and two kitchens that are shared and must be cleaned several times a day. Two private bathrooms and kitchens. I take care of the bookings, Manage all restorations, volunteers with the ASPCA and block watch, so my personal time is valuable to me. I would not waste my valuable alone time going through people personal belongings. I do randomly check the rooms to make sure that there are no problems and people are abiding by my rules, like no drugs, removing smoke detectors alarms so they can smoke, hanging wet clothes on a fan or fire sprinklers. When you have been doing this for a while you will see the strangest things. Burned clothes in the oven. Someone took the top lock apart with a knife so I have to change the screws. Furniture completely re-arranged in a bizarre manner, etc.

To accuse me of possible theft is offensive and something NY Habitat should address on my behalf. Clearly there are some trust issues here but it has nothing to do with me. It has to do with them, All of these issues were addressed with NYHabitat at the moment they happened.

Apartment extremely well located in Harlem two blocks from the express train (A or C), which reaches Times Square in 10-15 minutes.

Yvette and Carlos were very warm and hospitable. Noise wise, our stay was a bit troubled by works going on in the next door building, but apart from that, the apartment was absolutely perfect and lacked nothing!

Thank you Yvette!

Thank you for your review Gael it was a pleasure to have you in the apartment!

Yes they are doing construction next door but only between the hours of 9 to 5. They will be done by March. If someone is out most of the time sightseeing it will not be a problem.

Now they are renovating on the other side of me. So basically 239 and 243 is renovating. 243 is almost done.

The apartment is in a great location in Harlem, very clean and we had a very warm welcome from the owner with a Starbuck gift card, which we appreciated a lot.

I will recommend Harlem for accommodation, and your website. Many thanks.

Stayed at apartment #14091 for 2 weeks in September 2009, it was absolutely terrific - the people in charge were extremely kind and helpful, nothing was missing. The apartment was clean and more spacious than I had expected. The area was also nice, and close to Central Park.

I would definitely recommend it and go for another visit.
