The iconic Central Park is just 3 blocks from the apartment, and here you can get away from the busy New York life for a while. Also 3 blocks away is Columbus Circle, where you will find the Time Warner Center which has many great shops and also a Whole Foods Market for convenient grocery shopping. Furthermore, there are countless restaurants in the area, such as the seafood restaurant Marea and the new-American Redeye Grill. Culturally, there is also much to see and do, as the famous concert venue Carnegie Hall is just one block away.
To explore other neighborhoods in the city, you can catch the subway at two stations nearby. At Columbus Circle and 59th Street you can catch the A, B, C, D or 1 train, and at 57th Street and 7th Avenue you have access to the N, Q and R lines.
