This furnished 1-bathroom studio apartment sits on the second floor (equivalent to the first floor in Europe) of a low-rise building on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York. The building has a security system and laundry amenities. It sits near the corner of 3rd Avenue and East 77th Street.
The design of this apartment—with large, recessed panels lining two long walls—recalls the hearty architecture of a railway boxcar. There is a certain momentum to the apartment which draws you from this end to that end. The rooms line up one after another; the bathroom greets you first when you enter the apartment. The shower may be ideal for a last minute clean up before you head out the door, but it is the tub that may kick off a relaxing evening. The separate kitchen says hello next. If you cook, this is a particularly welcoming greeting. The kitchen has an oven, a toaster, a microwave, a coffeemaker, a freezer, and a fridge. The main room greets you with a big voice, for it is the largest area in the apartment. Three windows look out on a few small trees. The trees look back in on a dining table, a TV, and a sofa—which unfolds into a queen-sized sofa bed.
The Upper East Side has attracted some of the biggest names in New York history—the Kennedys, the Rockefellers, the Roosevelts, and Joseph Pulitzer. The neighborhood has not yet left behind this tradition of class. If you head into Central Park, you will find Belvedere Castle just under a mile (around 1.4 kilometers) from the apartment. This is a miniature fort overlooking Turtle Pond where the weather service checks the elements. An army of restaurants surrounds the apartment, and a few museums populate the area. There are clothing and electronic stores as well as grocers on the nearby blocks.
The subway station located nearest the apartment is the 77th Street station on Lexington Avenue. It is only a block away and services the 4 and 6 trains. Within 0.6 miles (around 960 meters) of the apartment, you can board the N, Q, and R trains at the 2nd Avenue station at either 72nd Street or 86th Street; or the 4 and 6 trains at the Lexington Avenue stations at either 68th Street or 86th Street. This 86th Street station also services the 5 train.
