Description
Room for Rent 3 Bedroom apartment in Upper East Side (NY-15738)
3 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom - Sleeps

Live among the Manhattan elite on the Upper East Side! The room for rent is located on Third Avenue and East 89th Street, the eclectic apartment resides on the 4th and top floor (considered as the 3rd floor in Europe) of a four-story low-rise walk-up building. The accommodating owner of this home will be your roommate and is happy to provide maps, menus, and neighborhood tips. For privacy purposes, a buzzer/intercom system is in place throughout the building.

Your private room for rent has a twin bed and pink walls lighten up the room, which contains one window facing another area of the home. A desk with shelves, drawers, and a wooden chair stands against one wall by the foot of the bed.  Dresser drawers attached to the desk and bed provides storage space; shelves allow personal items to be displayed. For personal use, a large mirror hangs on a wall at the head of the bed. For hot NY days, an air conditioner is also available. Please note that shoes are not allowed in this apartment*

The shared three-bedroom household is bubbling with life with a bird, which will be cared for by your roommate. The living room features a large sofa, as well as a piano for the musically inclined. Paintings hang from the wall, a pendant lamp with fan hangs from the ceiling, and various mirrors are scattered throughout. The shared kitchen is fully equipped and includes a window, oven, freezer, microwave, coffeemaker, toaster, and fridge. The bathroom, also shared, includes a shower and tub, as well as a mirror above the sink.

The beautiful community of the Upper East Side offers not only an abundance of attractions, but also some of the most beautiful scenery in NYC. Be sure to take the short train ride (or leisurely walk) to Central Park (0.6 mi/1 km). This famous park is truly a sight to behold year round as it is both admirable in its beauty and size, and bountiful with artists, performers, and pedestrians. While you’re there, take a look at the beautiful Strawberry Fields, located in the park just across from the building John Lennon once occupied. Another must-see is the “museum mile” on Fifth Ave – home to a section of Fifth Avenue bountiful with museums celebrating various cultures. Some of these museums include the Museum for African Art, El Museo del Barrio, Museum of the City of New York, The Jewish Museum, Guggenheim Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. For most of your basic household needs walk around the corner to the CVS/Pharmacy (0.3 mi/500 m). Restaurants may be hard to choose from – as there are so many of them! Famous dining in the area includes Shake Shack, Candle 79, Andaz, JG Melon, Flex Mussels, and Café Mingala. During lazy days, walk just outside the door to Delizia 92, Dakshin, Trattoria Pesce & Pasta, Uptown Lounge, or Gael Pub.

The subway at at 86th Street and Lexington Avenue (0.2 mi/320 m). This station serves the 4, 5, and 6 trains – meaning you have local and express options to take you all around Manhattan and more!

Please Note: For an additional charge, your roommate will be happy to do your laundry.

I stayed at this place for 3 months, May-July 2017.
Overall, the experience was very positive. The owner is very helpful and accomodating. The rent is very reasonable compared to other similar postings (my friends were paying almost 30% higher than I was, for worse accomodation in Manhattan - no fans, no AC).
The owner even didn't mind when the second month's rent was a bit late because the bank has put my deposited pay check on hold (new customer verification). The owner also let me use kitchen utensils, microwave and stove for no extra charge.

The house does have bird(s), so you need to be comfortable with a little noise/smell in general. The apartment is also on the fourth floor (no elevator), so taking all luggage up on the first day, and down on my last day was tiresome.

The extra charge for AC is fairly negligible compared to the rent, so that is a huge plus.
All things considered, I'd rate my whole experience 9.5/10, mostly because the host is very helpful and makes up for any other drawbacks.

Dear Pallav, thank you very much for the kind review! It was such a pleasure meeting you and having you stay the three months. I'm very glad you enjoyed yourself and had a good experience here! You are always welcome to come back! Thank you again for accepting the birds! Now there is only one bird, all the others are happy in their new home! I know the steps can be a bit of a challenge, but a great "built in" form of exercise! Also worth the walk up to a really great apartment! Thank you for your patience and kindness, I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay, all the best to you always!
Take care,
Laura

I lived in this apartment for a year while studying (I'm an international student). I highly recommend it. The location is amazing and the host is such a sweet and friendly person. For me - coming from another country and being in NYC for the first time, feeling safe was the most important thing and I always felt safe in the apartment, with my super friendly room mates and in the neighbourhood. The apartment is located very close to everything you need (subway station, Wholefoods, Keyfood, H&M, restaurants, Central Park etc.). The rent is very low considering the great neighbourhood. The apartment is very clean, the host is putting a lot of time and effort making sure it's clean. The only reason why this category got 4 stars instead of 5 is that there are some birds in the kitchen, the roommate is putting a lot of effort in vacuuming underneath the cage every day though. The room is simple, but comfortable. If you choose to use the A/C it's pretty loud, and there was some background noise in the room - not sure if it was a radiator or a pipe in the building or something else. But these things are small details, really. I had a great stay.

Hi Elin! It was truly a pleasure having you stay. I will miss you!
You'll be happy to know all the birds are gone!! (Save one!) I gave them all away! What a burden lifted! I'm sorry the air conditioner was a little loud,, I know the room is a little small so it's hard to escape, we should have put a blanket over it!
Again, I'm grateful to have met you, it was a pleasure!
Wishing you all the best always!
Take care!

Great location, walk up to 2 blocks and get close to everything you might want (supermarket, coffee shops, restaurants, laundromats, subway station).

Apartment is located on 4th floor. Staircase wasn't an issue for me but I wouldn't recommend it to someone with a mobility issue.

A/C works great. Good shower. The rest is average. Room is kinda small but it's doable.
No sleepovers.

Overall a great value. Would recommend for someone staying up to 2 months.

Very nice room in an excellent location for a great price, but it has its disadvantages.
The room is very small, approx 2.5m2. The curtains are very thin and have an annoying design. The room's window faces the building shaft so from time to time it's quiet but it's hard to get it filled with fresh air, the only way is to keep the window and the door open and leave the fan on, but the flatmate will turn the fan off (transgressing your personal space) if she notices it. The flatmate and the building don't separate the thrash and usually the common thrash containers will overwhelm and it stinks. The apartment and the building hall are covered in mirrors and religious things, which is creepy and cumbersome. The flatmate claims to be very religious, she will try to convert you often and will invite you tirelessly to attend her congregation activities, however there is greed in her heart, she is also extremely passive-aggressive. The kitchen lacks some cookware, there is a radio that plays 24/7 christian rock and there are noisy and dirty birds on the table, which make it useless, unless you want to eat next to bird food, feathers and feces. If you want to eat you have to use the piano bench or your desk. Don't expect a lot consideration in terms of the occupancy of the common use rooms.
Decent enough for short time stays, because in the long run, all the things will get you on your nerves

Mario, I was glad to hear that you enjoyed the room, location and the reasonable cost. I am sorry that you were annoyed by some things about the accommodations and found portions of your stay unsatisfactory. All of the other long term 8 roommates that I've hosted, were extremely happy with both the the arrangements and me as a host, and I am sorry you didn't have the same experience.

It seemed that your dissatisfaction started around the time that we had a discussion about having guest sleepover for several days in a row in my absence. This is a rule that is stipulated in the contract, as well as the house rule. I enjoyed having your mother come over and cook as well and was flexible about that. You chose to disregard my request, went against my wishes were dishonest and had your girlfriend stay while I was away. The rules related to having your girlfriend/friend sleepover were made clear to you. I understand that this is a rule that might not suit your lifestyle needs and I encourage you to discuss this with New York Habitat, as this isn't a host home issue, this was clearly communicated to you, that only you could sleep in the room. As far as transgressing personal space, I asked you numerous times to turn off all electricity upon leaving the apartment, (fire hazard) you did not , so I merely flipped the switch to the fan off, never entering the room. As for the curtains, they are normal semi sheer clean curtains, I can certainly understand they were probably not to your taste. The room has 2 Windows (one has an air conditioner in it) and it faces another bedroom in the apartment (the air shaft is In between the Windows) there is a ceiling fan that circulates air and keeps things cool. I have ample cook wear, nothing lacking, I know you are an avid cook and always in the kitchen, you probably would have liked more of a variety of cooking utensils.

I was glad to have you as a suite mate and wish you all the best in your future journeys.

Very quiet apartment, well located and close to the subway, it has a good value for money. Finding a room at this price in Manhattan is not easy.

I really enjoyed my three months here. The location is perfect - uptown so you are away from the craziness and hectic pace downtown (it's great for leisure and work but not to sleep or relax!)but just 2 to 3 blocks away from the EXPRESS 4 and 5 trains which get you to Grand Central in 2 stops or Union Square in 3 stops. That is REALLY helpful. Great shops and food options all seconds away and gym, yoga, fitness facilities too. You will be equal distance between the east side river and Central Park - there's no excuse not to explore the great outdoors here.

The owner/roommate is great, helpful with local tips and insider knowledge, very clean and very understanding no matter what your question or concern is. Don't hesitate to ask, suggest or think of something different or new as she is very accommodating and flexible.

The apartment is an older style walk-up so the building is old and the apartment itself is in its original condition. Whilst it may not be like staying at the Hilton, everything you need is here for an apartment and working fine. The bedroom is small (a single room + table + chair takes up the space) but clever storage and hanging solutions makes it seamless. There is also separate storage for big suitcases to make things even easier.

This used to be the owner's family home so it is still set up/decorated that way - not a concern - but just be aware: on one hand as a traveler it's nice to finally feel in a "home" and not a hostel/hotel but remember you are also the guest in someone else's home too!

Overall, great value for money and very comfortable living.

PS - you need to be somewhat comfortable with animals as there is a dog and 2 birds (though they all make very little noise)!
