Description
2 Bedroom Vacation Rental in Harlem (NY-14801)
2 Bedrooms - Duplex, 2 Bathrooms - Sleeps 8

This two bedroom duplex apartment is in Harlem, a neighborhood in Uptown Manhattan, New York. The apartment is on the 3rd and 4th floors (considered 2nd and 3rd floors) of a 4-story walk-up townhouse. There is a buzzer/intercom system for security.

This apartment occupies two levels, with sleeping accommodations available in both living rooms as well as the bedrooms. Trundle beds (beds with an extra mattress stowed underneath) maximize the space in the living rooms when not in use, allowing guests to move around more freely. All rooms are fully furnished, with the furnishings occupying most of the open space.

This apartment features antique charm, with 2 fireplaces and exposed brick walls. The 3rd floor (lower level) has a bedroom, living room with open kitchen (no dining area), and full bath. The living room also has a single size trundle bed (single size bed with a second single size mattress that is stored underneath). The 4th floor (upper level) has a bedroom, full bath, and a second living room that is furnished as a bedroom with 2 sets of trundle beds (Living Room 2 in photos and floorplan). There is an additional folding table that can fit up to 8 people, located on the second level as well.

The bedrooms of this apartment have windows with northern exposure, looking onto neighboring buildings, and the living rooms have windows with southern exposure, overlooking the street below.

This apartment is on West 119th Street in Harlem, New York City. Marcus Garvey Park is less than a block away, and the famed Central Park is just 1/2 a mile (about 800m) south of this rental. In November, the New York Marathon passes by this building on 5th Avenue, there is a grocery store and laundromat (within 2 blocks or 100m), and the nearby Lenox Avenue offers a variety of restaurants and convenience stores. Also on Lenox Avenue, you will find the Lenox Lounge where you can enjoy jazz music, a staple of Harlem.

Public transportation is convenient with the 2/3 subway station just 4 blocks away (500m) at the 116 Street / Lenox Avenue station, offering both express and local train service.

Please note: The trundle beds are located in the living rooms, so there is limited privacy in those spaces.

Dear Jean Rene, thank you for your feedback. We spoke with the owner to find out more. He believes this is a misunderstanding and confirmed that he did not charge you an extra $20.

The owner was very discreet and helpful from the time we booked the apartment and all the time we were there until we left. We were given good advice as soon as we asked for it. We were promptly helped with any problems we encountered. The apartment was as we had expected from the photos we had seen and the description and reviews we had read. It was a very well planned apartment in a small space. The location was excellent with walking distance to a number of underground station lines, Central Park, food stores, pharmacies and restaurants. We were very content with our choice of accomodation and would highly recommend it to others in the future.

The apartment is clean, but much smaller than it looks in the photos on the website.

The dining table that is on the floor of the room lying. We asked the owner to put it on the dining floor ,what it came down and we had to trap it between the bed and the wall in the dining room.

The owner who does not seem to want to leave us alone from the first evening, put us out at the door with our baggages at 11:45 last day. We had to insist to receive back our 500.00 US dollars deposit despite the fact that everything was intact and without no damage.

He gave us money when we were out on the sidewalk.

Nov 08 2013

Thank you Chantal for taking the time to write a review, we appreciate all feedback from our guests. This apt is advertised as a two bedroom two, bathroom duplex apt with a notation that is not a large apt. I am sorry that was not clear to you.

As you can see in the pictures the dining table fits very nicely in the loft area upstairs because for a large group the lower level would not hold 8 guests comfortably for dining. For 4-5 guests, as your group was, there is an eating space in the kitchen, along with an additional small table that can be used to expand that space.

The owner placed the dining room table downstairs for you per your request; however there is no real place for it. Please note, the dining room table was never advertised to be used in that space.

The owner has his own way of greeting guests. We accommodated your late check in happily, and he always lets his guests in, gives them a quick run through of the apt, showing them the information booklet created for guests, and then gives guests a few minutes alone to check the apt out while he retrieves the keys. That way if there are any questions they can be asked at that time and you can enjoy the rest of your stay peacefully.

I apologize if that felt overbearing.

Checkout is very clearly noted it is at 11AM firm. The owner had tried to emphasize this situation to you upon arrival, but apologize if that was not made clear to you. We usually accommodate late checkouts if we can, but there was a check in on the same day as your check out so turnaround time was tight. Again I apologize if that was not clear to you.

In regards to the security deposit, there was never an issue with refunding the security deposit. It was in the owners apartment and he went back inside to retrieve it after he helped you with your luggage.

Under no circumstances were we trying to hold that back, he was really trying to stay within schedule when he tried to enforce the strict checkout time of 11AM.

We strive to make all our guests feel at home during their stay, and we're disappointed in not being able to achieve that goal for you and your friends.

The vacation rental is true to its description, nicely set up and decorated, quiet and clean. Maybe the equipment is a bit limited (frying pan, teaspoons, kettle or teapot) but nothing too bad. The only constraint is you have to add a small side table + a coffee table for the 4th person since the table will only sit 3 people (3 stools).

Very warm and friendly welcome from the owner who was also considerate and accommodating.

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
May 09 2013

Dear Cecile, you were a great guest and we really enjoyed having you! There is a full dining room table and extra chairs in the apt that can be used when you need extra space.

Its a great table that folds down to nothing for storage but opens up to fit 8 people for a full meal! Thank you for your kind words, and we hope to see you again.

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
Apr 30 2013

Thank you André for your kind words. The stairs might be a bit higher than most people are used to, but it is due to the architecture of the townhouse that was built in the 1900's.

It was a pleasure to have you!

We were 7 adults for our stay from 12/25/12 through 01/01/13. The stay was fantastic in particular thanks to this vacation rental and its host who gave us good tips on the neighborhood and the city. Actually, we'd like to thank him for his hospitality and his kindness on our arrival on Christmas day and our departure on New Year's day.

The vacation rental is an excellent compromise between location and price. Its location in Harlem (a really nice neighborhood - a must-see) near a subway station (a 5-10 minute walk) is ideal, Times Squares is a 20-minute ride.

It's also great to have a supermarket really close by, especially when you want to prepare breakfast made in the U.S. It's true that space is a bit tight especially when there's a lot of luggage as was the case for us, but space is costly in New York and this was in no way restrictive during our stay, the main asset for us was that there are 2 bathrooms.

As for comfort, we had no problem at all sleeping, the bedding is quite nice and allows for a good rest before you set off for long days exploring New York.

In short, we had a fantastic holiday season in New York and we recommend this vacation rental.

Nice, quite big apartment (for NY) on 2 floor levels. The owner lives in basement and groundfloor and a bit eccentric but very kind and very helpful! You can walk to Central Park, for all other places you must take the subway but that's not a problem.

We felt safe and comfortable in Harlem. You get rats on the streets everywhere in NY, you just have to put up with them. And there is a great deal to discover in Harlem.

Very warm welcome from the owner. The apartment is spacious, except for the breakfast nook which is a bit small. The kitchen is very well equipped as is the apartment overall.
Only the cleanliness of the linens seemed questionable...

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
Jun 25 2012

Thanks for the kind words, we are glad the guests enjoyed their stay!

This apt is ideal for 4-6 guests with the sleeping space for more, but the as the apt is a bit tight -- it is NYC after all! :) -- the dining area is not equipped for more than 6 in the kitchen area by utilizing the high bar table and the small folding table. However there is a full dining room table that is folded neatly away in the walk through on the second level of the duplex with 6 chairs to go with it. This table can be setup upstairs and 6 guests can comfortably eat a sit down dinner.

We were not aware of any linens that were dirty as all the linens and towels are cleaned after each guest, and new linens are purchased on a regular basis.

We apologize if something passed our inspection, but are glad these guests still had a great time.
We enjoyed having them and hope to see them again!

- Final contact a bit complicated with the owner (we woke him up at 9.50 am and he wasn't pleased) as a result we left without seeing him again and could not get our deposit back as he wasn't there at the time of our departure.

Nice decoration that prevails on the practical side.

- Not enough storage space for the clothes, clothes rack or hook
- Kitchen area too small for 7

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
May 22 2012

There is a new dining room table which fits up to 6 guests. There is an additional folding table that can seat another two if necessary and the bar table in the kitchen that has 3 stool chairs.
Yes, there was some weird mis-communication with the guests the night before that lead into the morning but I took care of it. I do apologize for that.

There are two walk in closets in the apt, they are actually walk throughs, you walk through them to get to the bedroom, but I will try to get extra hangers, and there is a dresser in each bedroom.

It was a delight to have the guest and family in our apt, we are glad everything worked out at the end!

Owner of the apartment was very helpful and friendly. I think the apartment is too small for 10 people. With us (6 persons) the apartment was already crowded, but still ok.

To my opinion the apartment price is very high, but thats how New York prices are I think.

Further to this review, the owner confirmed that there are sufficient beds and sleeping arrangements for parties of up to 10 guests, but that the apartment can get crowded with this many occupants.

Overall we were very pleased with the apartment. It is much nicer than portrayed on the photographs. The apartment is very well furnished, combining modern and antique seemlessly. Loved it!

PROS: Lots of natural light, comfortable beds, quiet, complete kitchen with all the supplies we needed (except wine glasses), free parking on the street, 2 subway lines (4 & 6 blocks away)
CONS: Poor wireless connection, rooftop terrace was not available, refrigerator had food left over from last tenants

Further to this review, we contacted the owner who informed us that there have been no further issues with the wireless Internet. He also confirmed that guests no longer have access to the rooftop terrace.
The owner will discuss the food being left in the refrigerator with the cleaning person and be sure that the fridge is emptied before each rental begins.

Our stay in this apartment was pleasant and interesting. The area is quiet and close to a 'colored' area of Harlem with lots of shops, bazars and restaurants. The accommodation itself is very quiet and the rooftop is a dream. It was simply a dream a rarity with vacation rentals in this price range to let the day fade away every evening over there while comfortably seated or to have breakfast out in the open in the morning.

The owner was nice and helpful and always remained discreet although he himself lives in the house. He took the trouble to give us useful tips and even left his own folder with all the important information in the apartment. We stayed in this apartment with six people, according to the description it can accommodate up to 10 people. Here I would like to say that with six people we had enough free space. For 10 people, I would not rent it.

With the subway, it takes about 10 minutes to reach Times Square. It is about a 10 minute-walk to the subway and when you come back home after a long day out running, running, then it sometimes feels endless. However for us, it was not a problem at all but for older people or people who are not so used to walking, it may not be so convenient.

There is a supermarket and a drugstore near the subway station where you get all essentials. For emergencies there is a small grocery store about 70 meters away where you can also find everything. The air conditioning was available and sufficient, but you still need to leave both bedroom doors open to get cool air everywhere in the apartment.

All in all, we liked it very much and we can easily recommend the accommodation. For a party of six the price per person is really cheap.

It is true the vacation rental is in Harlem off New York downtown, but it is easily accessible with public transport. Most of all it is located in a quiet neighborhood just a few blocks away from Central Park.

The accommodation is unusual, very quiet, peaceful even. The decor is less impersonal than in many hotels.

The neighborhood is interesting and worth discovering and the owner is discreet and very obliging.
