Picasso in Antibes, France
Any layperson endowed with common sense would never combine antiquity and modernity into a single concept. But legendary artist Pablo Picasso would never have let such an obvious oxymoron stop him, and neither did the museum bearing his name in Antibes. Therefore, until May 20, any visitor of the French Riviera can swing by the renowned resort town and enjoy the exhibit “Une moderne Antiquité : Picasso, de Chirico, Léger et Picabia en présence de l’antique” (A Modern Antiquity: Picasso, De Chirico, Léger et Picabia in the presence of the ancient world). At this exhibit, Greco-Roman sculptures and ceramics are confronted with 20th century’s masterpieces, highlighting not only the inspiration that these four groundbreakers of modern art drew from the ancient times, but also how they managed to reinvent and modernize classical art, in particular during the productive period between the two World Wars.
