After years of experience in the New York furnished apartment rental market, New York Habitat has decided to broaden our scope to meet the needs of longer term clients who are looking for unfurnished apartment rentals. To make this new service a success, we have carefully selected a team of real estate agents who have experience in both furnished and unfurnished apartment rentals.

Much preparation has gone into creating this department, including creation of a new section of the New York Habitat website, analysis of clients and recruitment of owners. We will share a bit of each of the process in the blog today as well as direct you to the newly created sections of our website.

For the unfurnished apartment rental service, New York Habitat has decided to continue to build on its core competencies while expanding to this new type of rental. The core competencies that the company has built itself on include:

Based on reader suggestion and feedback, New York Habitat has recently become involved with the World Community Grid research project. Our desire to use the technology of our offices combined with the range of research the project provides has made the union a perfect fit.

New York Habitat Aids in the Advancement of Cancer Research describes our similar participation in a project run by Grid.org. Like Grid.org, the World Community Grid (powered by IBM) uses distributing computing to make advancements in the area of medical research. However, whereas Grid.org focused on cancer research, the World Community Grid has joined forces with several research projects concerning different important issues.

Distributing computing allows for volunteers all over the world to donate computer time. Volunteers download software that enables the World Community Grid and like projects to complete virtual preliminary research on a range of topics. 

At the moment, World Community Grid is forwarding the research for muscular dystrophy, genome comparisons, proteome folding, and AIDS.

At this point in our involvement, New York Habitat has been able to donate over a year and a half of computer processor time. As a premiere resource for vacation accommodations in London, Paris, the South of France, and New York, we are proud that the computers in our offices can be put to such important use.

Help make a difference.

In 2001, New York Habitat made the decision to utilize the resources necessary to operate a multi-city apartment rental service to assist a greater cause. New York Habitat & Cancer Research: Philanthropy meets Biology! discusses those efforts to aid in a project geared towards cancer research. 

The project, which involved the combined work of Oxford University, The National Foundation for Cancer Research, and United Devices, aimed to make advancements in the discovery of a cancer pharmaceutical through the use of grid computing.

While several supercomputers could have completed the preliminary research necessary to begin laboratory work on a cancer pharmaceutical, the task would have literally taken a lifetime. However, with the combined energy of millions of individual computers all over the world, the project can be completed in years.

As of April 27, 2007, the research finally came to a close. Grid computing, or distributing computing as it is also called, helped to narrow down the number of molecules that will elicit the desired drug-like reaction once united with a given number of researched proteins.

At the time of the program’s conclusion, over 3 million computers were being utilized all over the world, all of which combined to contribute 210 years of computer time daily. Out of this abundant amount of computer resources, New York Habitat is ranked 180th of overall contributed processor-time. Through the course of the project, we were able to provide 78 years of valuable research!

“We are very proud of our contribution to this project,” said Francois Roux, vice president of New York Habitat. “To be able to use our technology to help with cancer research was gratifying for us as a company and for me personally. I am really looking forward to a new project.”

Now that the project has reached its conclusion, New York Habitat is looking for another worthwhile endeavor in which to participate. We strongly encourage you to send information concerning any organizations, projects, and groups that wish to aid humanity for the better.

New York Habitat has recently invested in upgrading our phone system to include Skype phones for all of our agents. The Skype technology has opened up new doors in international communication allowing for seamless connections phone connections over the internet.

For those who are unfamiliar with the technology it is a voice over internet protocol (voip) phone system. By connecting a Skype phone which can be purchased through most electronics stores and many website you can make calls over via your computer’s internet connection. The best part is that calls made between Skype users are free, while calls made to landlines and cell phones throughout the world are significantly cheaper than calling on a normal landline. If you have a Skype phone and you are working with New York Habitat feel free to share your Skype Name. All of our agents now have Skype Names, which you can use to contact them if you have Skype. 

Of course we still have regular phone lines and e-mail as well but the Skype options allows us to offer clients and owners an additional way to reach the agents when working to rent apartments with us whether in London, Paris, The South of France, New York or the rest of the world.
